Alright, there have been alot of discussions about the current GM regime choices being "gas hogs" and unfriendly economically. Many argue that most of the GM line-up are excessively powerful and lack fuel economy and economical pricing. I'm not going to argue any of that or throw around the whole "American money needs to stay in America" fight,we all have opinions and I'm asking this stay positive instead of a treason indictment arguement. Keeping that in mind.....
My wife and I bought a new Impala SS last week and it has impressed me more than any other car I've ever owned. The Explorer is getting old and it gave us a pretty good 5 years but my wife finally said that with just over 100K it's time to move on. I only buy American or European but that's my deal,I'm not trying to point my finger or start a fight. We had a Navigator before the Explorer and my wife hated it, too clumsy and not at all gas efficient. No other Ford's turned our heads and after an ordeal I had with a Dodge pickup, I still haven't forgiven them and in the meantime I'm not buying their products. This car is a daily driver that my 3 year old needs to be in to and from pre-school so considering the heavy mileage and potential daily abuse it would face we felt that we should cap the price at $25-30K.That basically eliminated anything European that would fit our needs. We turned to GM.
Originally, we liked the buick Lucerne and it was only a couple thousand above what we wanted to spend but after taking the car home for an overnight testdrive we found that it was a hair to big to fit in the garage. It only had 3 inches to spare TOTAL from the door to the garage wall making it very difficult to walk around. Next we looked at the Lacrosse which is very similar but midsized instead of full size,we loved it and it was very plush and comfortable and had the 3800 V-6 which is a fantastic motor and the mileage was better than the Northstar V-8 the Lucerne had.We were ready to buy it but I suggested we check the Chevy dealership just for the heck of it.I thought we had seen all the typical Chevy models but the new body style Impala somehow escaped my mind.
Upon looking around we found that the Impala was very similar to the Lacrosse except it had a younger sporty feel. We ended up taking out a Impala SS for a test drive and it was all over, it was plush and sporty and extremely quick. It had a 5.3L V-8 that puts out 303 HP and a suspension to handle that kind of speed. While having every single toy and gadget imaginable and some I didn't even know about it also has great mileage, posted 18 City and 28 HWY it was almost identical to the 3800 Lacrosse and is one of the best cars I've ever driven. Last weekend we went to Atlanta for a family get together and we drove instead of flew just to get a feel for the car and I love it more than before. The styling is very nice although it doesn't jump out at you and the car came in at $28K which is great for a family sedan that would have beat my old vette. I invite and even challenge everyone to drive this car because I feel the bang for the buck is incredible and I haven't seen anything for less than twice that amount that I feel compares.Seriously, MKT, Gary, and all you other car people try it out-just make sure you try the SS because all the difference lies in there.
