Animal rights petition the layoff of dolphins from Epcot's The Seas

I read the petition, and then a lot of the comments. It really gets me sometimes that Disney is the main company people target with their complaints, etc. As I was reading the petition, I wondered if they had actually done any research on those dolphins and the facility. I knew I had read somewhere that they were rescued dolphins, or even born in captivity, and to release them would endanger them even more. I do not believe that Disney would do anything to jeopardize their reputation (& bank account) needlessy or carelessly.

Far too many, sadly. Have you ever watched the documentary, The Cove? It was absolutely one of the most disturbing, sad, and heart-breaking things I've ever watched. Yet I consider it an extremely important documentary as well, and I'm glad I saw it.

No I have not but I heard that it was very moving and very sad...

Some of these ideas are pretty radical but there are about a half billion people that live as vegetarians so I would not consider that point too out of bounds.
If an individual chooses to be a vegetarian, that's a personal lifestyle choice. The radicals that I was referring to want all eating of meat abolished. That's where rational thought ends and extremism begins.

Yes, I can't stand to watch it either. Partially because I love dolphins and partially because I love Japan...but I know there's only like a dozen or so fishermen who still hunt dolphins there (ignoring the entirely separate issue of whale hunting for the moment).

OK... So I hope everyone will enjoy the Animal Kingdom, Animal Kingdom Lodge and AKVs now because you know they will be next if WDW caves. Some people are just ignorant and/or stupid!

Oh and lets not forget the horses in some of the parades(can only think of Headless Horseman @ WDW), transportation, and even the horseback riding at Fort Wilderness.

Each case must be judged on its own merit.

One case is capturing a crocodile who in the wild spends his days lying stationary near a riverbank and putting him in captivity to...spend his days lying stationary near a riverbank.
Another case is a 800lbs, highly intelligent mammal with a territory in the wild five times the size of the continental United States living in a bathtub he swims end to end with two strokes.

Let's be real here. WDW isn't going to cave.
Sea World isn't going to cave.
Your local zoo isn't going to cave.

Not this century, at least.

Some American zoos have already caved to animal rights groups demands and closed their elephant exhibits. Now it's the elephants, next it's the gorillas next it's...

To be fair, the vast majority of zoos in this country are completely ill-equipped to have elephants on display. Elephants require a very large enclosure, and are social animals that must be around other elephants. Most zoos don't provide that (DAK, however, does). Don't get me started on elephants in the circus...

I understand your point, however my point was more a reply to the animal rights extremists thought of all animals should be free and none should be eaten nonsense.

As far as the dolphins currently at Living Seas or at least as of May 2011(last updated date on the link) 3 of the 4 dolphins were born in captivity. Again do not know if things have changed in the last year, since they may transfer animals through one of the AZA programs.

Anyone recall Dolphins doing circus tricks at Living Seas? Anyone? Anyone?! What a misguided and misinformed lot.

Actually in the upper level of Seas, a trainer will sometimes have dolphin's swim up to one of the viewing windows and smile over the shoulder of a posing guest for a photo.
Yes its a trick, but its cute and makes for a wonderful memory. Best of all... no direct contact interaction by the guests with the dolphins

Jim Hill told a great story about how the Dolphins at The Seas would get bored and wait for the Rays to swim close to the top of the tank. The dolphins would then swim up underneath them and flip them out of the tank. Evidently that's why they're in a separate enclosure.

That petition makes me sick... if they really want to do some good for the dolphins of the world how about stopping the hunts that happen in countries such as Japan (documented in the Blood Dolphins - The Cove documentary).... seriously.

A sense of perspective is good. But just because children are killed in Syria does not mean one is misguided to strive to end child abuse in America.

Makes sense. Dolphins, lovable as they might be, are some of the biggest jerks in the animal kingdom between murdering their own and constantly killing porpoises and doing certain things to humans...

Also....how many dolphins are hunted and killed in the wild??? These dolphins are treated great! Has anyone ever done the backstage tour??? My husband and I did it and I have never learned so much about these amazing creatures! I also learned that they are fed live fish as well as dead fish. It is a combination of the two. Yes, there are other places that should not allow animals/fish/whatever in their facilities but WDW is not one of them!

Many dolphins are hunted and killed in the wild. Many are also captured and sold to amusement parks around the world. You must not have seen the documentary " The Cove" I suggest you and everyone on this thread watch it. This is being done in Japan and the Japanese goverment keeps it under wraps. Many celebrities like Hayden Pattintere protest this. You will change your mind about dolphins in captivity no matter how well they are treated once you watch "The Cove"
