Animal Kingdom Nighttime must do!

I have just came back from a short Disney trip in which me and my wife stayed at Animal Kingdom after dark for the first time. Two of the attractions we were looking forward to doing after dark were Everest and Safari, and it did not disappoint. (Sorry for the long post, and terrible story telling)
I'll start with Everest. We rode Everest a few times in a row in single rider since no one was in that line and only waited about 5 minutes each time. It was getting darker and we were wasting time until we got to ride it when it was completely dark outside. When the sun finally went down, it was time, something we were looking forward to do since Animal Kingdom had after dark hours, ride Everest at night. By this time there was no line and could just walk on. We asked for front row which we had to wait a couple minutes for but made the experience that much better. We finally got on the ride and it might have been the best Everest experience I have ever had. Feeling the cool night air and just the night time atmosphere added intensity to the ride. (Idk how to explain riding roller coasters at night, which in MY OPINION makes it better) Seeing AK with all the lights on while going up the longer chain lift was an awesome sight. Then when you get to the 'broken' track before you go backwards, another great sight to be seen only to be seen at night. (the EPCOT ball lit up in the distance as well as the Ferris Wheel in downtown Orlando) Overall a great experience and a must do.
Second was the safari. We did it earlier in the day and the CM talked about how some of the animals were more active at night, including the lion which is one of my favorite on the attraction. We get there and just like Everest, has no line. Me and my wife had the row to ourselves and didn't have to stuff in with another family like before. We go and it was about the same as daytime, except for the hippos were more a little more active than before. I was thinking the Safari after dark wasnt anything really different until... we got to the lions. We saw all of them walking around which was pretty cool and then 2 of the female lions came across each other and started play fighting. They swatted at one another a couple times then got on their hind legs to start swatting which was pretty awesome to see. Just as it got interesting the vehicle we were in turned the corner. They were just play fighting but it was awesome to see. (thanks for making it this far with my terrible writing)

Fully agree that AK at night is awesome. Just did it a few days ago and I definitely prefer it to daytime. The safari was especially interesting because so many animals were more active since they weren't out in the hot Florida sun. Watching lions leaping from rock to rock and then returning during the day and not knowing if I'm seeing a lion or a rock was so cool. Also, ending the night at 8:30 made waking up for a 7am MK extra magic so much easier.

@flyerjab What are your thought on nighttime activities to take in at DAK? I'll be down there the first of December. Hopefully ROL will be up and running, The Tree of Life Awakenings looks amazing. What else? Does FOTLK have evening times?

Definitely ToL Awakenings. Do the safari when the sun is setting; don't wait too late or it is harder to see some of the animals. Everest is a no-brainer. For a true signature dining experience go to Tiffins. It is expensive but it is incredible, and the Nomad Lounge has one of the best specialty drink menus across the entire resort. After dark, the Harambe village is great just to hang out in. The bar area (Dawa bar I believe). Is great, and you can see the entertainment from there. I will even go as far as to say that Dinoland looks great and the atmosphere there is so much better at night. Not certain about showtimes for FotLK.

Trust me, you will love it. Go early enough to check out the animal trails before they close though. That would be a great way to start your day in that park.

Awesome. Thanks for the tips!!! We have FP for the safari from 5 till 6. I'll try to time it perfect.

To the OP: thanks for sharing! :) I just changed my plans (after reading your review) for an early dinner at Rainforest Cafe and then one last ride on Kilimanjaro Safari . I have a question that may seem a bit stupid, but I can't find the answer... How late can I enter AK? For example, can I get in at 6pm even if it closes at 7pm?

I believe so, a family was coming in when I was leaving. I'm not sure what time it was but it was already dark. Also let me know how it goes

I highly recommend a safari after the sun goes down because animal behavior is completely different. We went on an 8:00 safari with the park closing at 8:30. When we got to the loading area it took a while to get a truck but once on the ride I realized the reason for the wait, they kept the trucks closer together in spots for extra lighting. I've been on hundreds of safaris and an after dark safari is definitely my favorite way to go now. Lions jumping from rock to rock didn't hurt.

I remember, back in 2005 or 2006, when they gave out actual extra magic hour wristbands, Animal Kingdom was open in the dark. It's still a memory that sticks out to me, the fuzzy glow of lights, the hum of jungle music, the excitement of AK at night. I don't even think Everest was opened yet, and I was so thrilled to be staying extra hours in the park.

Animal kingdom at night is truly a sight to be seen. It's not your everyday theme park, it's definitely not a zoo, and it evokes a certain unique magic that the other parks do not. I wish on every star that ROL and Avatar land keep my beloved AK open late, and it sparks the same feelings for guests yet to come.

Everest at night is amazing, we rode on it 5 times in a row just walking on last time we visited. The cool air and the lights for me make it even better and when you are going in and out of the tunnels it is literally pitch black.

I love the AK at night too. This year we got to do the DVC event there until midnight and riding Everest at night in the front is awesome and we got to do it over and over. The REAL highlight though is the Safari at night. The lions are actually active and they were wrestling. Even a crocodile was moving around and the CM even said that she had never seen that. She did say one night thought that she watched a cheetah climb up in a tree. If no one has ever been there at night I also highly recommend it.

AK is one of my favorite parks. But bc of lack of rides and closing early it's generally been a 1/2-2/3 day park for us. These nighttime additions make it a full day park. Especially when Avatar Land opens.
