First taste is free, want more gotta pay up.
having it on Hulu is a smart move. I'm not sure the YouTube strategy will help. The first 3 episodes are pretty slow moving. That season was infinitely better as a binge watch. Most everyone I know tuned out by the 3rd episode. And it seems that was pretty common. People seemed to gravitate to it more once all the episodes were out. I guess it doesn't cost them anything really so it's worth a shot.

Again the idea is you get them interested in the show and if you want to see more you have to sign up if they already aren't. Will it work, I don't know. But as you said it doesn't cost them anything, so why not. Its the same reason they aired the first two episodes on ABC in 2022.

Oh I get that. My point was, like you said, you need to get them interested. And the first 3 episodes kinda failed at that. That's the wonder. I would have done at least the first half. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the show. But a lot of people gave up after the first couple episodes.

Maybe, but I also know people that watched the first 2 episodes when originally released and was hooked, so it goes both ways. So obviously Disney is confident enough in the first 3 to think it'll hook enough to warrant them putting it out for free, again it costs them nothing.

I get that. As I said there's never an everyone or no one. The viewership tells me that your example wasn't the majority. It's just a bit curious in my opinion. Add a few more episodes and you would probably hook a lot more people. It costs nothing either way so why not go a bit more. If you want to see how it ends, I just think they'd have a better chance getting someone to that point with a few more episodes.

But why would you give away the entire season for free, putting out the expectation that you're going to do that all the time, when you can just dangle the carrot out there for a taste with a few episodes.

Its the same theory behind the old give away the phone for free to get the customer to buy the expensive phone plan. You dangle the carrot of the "free" part to get them hook into getting the more expensive option that isn't free.

Wait, when did I say the whole season? I specifically and clearly said "add a few more episodes". You aren't giving the whole season away with 5 or 6 episodes, the season was 12. Lets just say for giggles that they did 10 episodes. If you're interested, you will still sign up for D+ to see the end. I get the dangling carrot. This whole thing is supposed to be to drum up interest in season 2. That's not as likely an outcome with just the first 3 episodes. And even if it was the whole season, it's still not giving it for free. They get the ad revenue. It might not be much, but it isn't nothing. And heck, when people see how quality the show is, maybe they subscribe.

Even at 6 episodes, that is too much in my opinion. You want to dangle enough to give a taste, but not too much that it upsets people because they aren't getting the rest for free.

Obviously Disney sees a benefit to it otherwise they wouldn't be doing it. They must have internal numbers that shows engagement with the first 3 episodes is high.
