We're looking to plan a beach trip (most likely not tied into a trip to Disney, so distance from WDW does not matter), and these are two places we are considering.

Any info on either place would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks:wave:

What type of Beach do you like? I've been to both, and can enjoy both for different reasons.

If you want surf activities, Amelia is better, for boogie boarding, surfing, wave kyaking, etc. Sanibel is a quiet beach, so is better for swimming , searching for shells, lying around in the sun, flatter water kyaking.

All in all, I prefer Amelia, which is why I sepnd a week there every summer. It is much easier to find a condo/room right on the ocean (I have a favorite place), so you can watch the sun rise while sipping coffee on your balcony.

I'd vote for Amelia too. Sanibel is beautiful, and has some great places for shelling, etc., but is more "upscale(?)" than Amelia. Amelia has a lot more of your typical beachfront places, and an awesome ice cream shop.

Definitely more family oriented, with lodging prices for everyone...from a Day's Inn (but it isn't on the ocean) and cheaper condos to the Ritz and Amelia Island Plantation. We usually stay in the mid-range at the Surf and Racquet Club (sufandracquet, do not go to the website with their full name, as it is a property broker; you can still rent a condo, but will have to go elsewhere to pick up your key, and won't have the services of the lovely office staff if something goes wrong) which is literally between the two high end properties; we get the same beach at half the price. We have stayed at the others for meetings, but if it's a whole week with family, I prefer something more casual, and compact.

EVERY condo overlooks the ocean, and the beach/pools are the same distance for everyone, unless you are on the first floor (but you lose the view due to dunes and vegetation) There are elevators, so the units are handicap accesible (this was an issue at other resorts!) There are full sized appliances (important if you have lots of beach towels to wash) so you can cook most any meal, if you choose. There are lots of restaurants in the historic downtown area, from upscale to a place where you get buckets of shrimp that you peel and eat at the table, which has a special hole for tossing the shells.

There is also lots of history there, from Ft Clinch (which has concerts in the evening on certain summer days) to American Beach, an historic African-American beach which was the place to go during segregation for people up and down the east coast.

I hate to sound like a member of the chamber of commerce, but we have found it to be an almost perfect vacation spot for our family, at all stages of life. It was perfect with a 3 month old, and just as perfect with teenagers.

I almost hate to say anything, for fear that it will get too touristy for our taste. So, keep it quiet. ;)

Why do I suspect we've unknowingly run into each other a few times?

It appears that you now have a panel to answer any questions you have about Amelia, from where to eat, to where to buy groceries, to where to buy beach equipment (if your condo doesn't have some in the closet - we've found lots of stuff left behind by previous occupants)

There was even a shop on the ocean road that sold nothing but bathing suits of every type. It was where my then 13 year old daughter found the first bikini that would fit her that both of us liked; not too revealing, not too babyish. I haven't looked for it lately, as she has been buying her clothes solo for almost a decade, and I'm at a basic black tank suit age.

I mentioned the ice cream shop, but I can't remember the name of it offhand. It seems to me that it was actually a candy store (maybe fudge?), but it had excellent ice cream. I'll have to check out the name of it with DH - he has a much better functioning memory than me.

Thanks for the info! It is hard to say exactly what we are looking for, because so many family members are going to come, and we all want different things! Some of us have kids, others do not...some of us like laid back accommodations, others like a more fancy "resort" feel. Some of us want to be able to make some of our own meals, others want to eat out every meal since they are on vacation. Some of us want to spend alot of time on the beach relaxing, others need more activities to keep them entertained.

This is why I just wanted to do a cruise! We've done cruises before for family gatherings, and it is perfect because there is something for everyone. But everyone wants to do a beach trip now.

It is so hard trying to please everyone!

Thanks again for the info, and if anyone else has any input about these two places or any other place in Florida, I'd love to hear about it!

A list of activities:

Beach
Golf
Tennis (free where we stay)
Bike trails (Ft Clinch has a nice one; it also has a nature trail for walking)
Kayaking in the marshes
Segway tour at ft Clinch
Horseback riding on the beach st the Seahorse stables
Shopping downtown
Bar hopping downtown
Dining...anything from burgers and beer at the beach to fine dining at the Ritz
Casino Cruise from the town dock
Cruise to Cumberland Island
Short trip to The Jacksonville Zoo - they have just opened a new Asian exhibit with Komodo Dragons
Fishing; charter and surf casting
Ghost tour of fort
Music festival (June)
Walking paths
Walking on beach at sunrise and sunset/dark
Chasing ghost crabs at night
Looking for sea turtles (but not touching or disturbing)
Movies
Bowling

We have had our family reunion there over a dozen times, which has included everything from new babies to my 80+ mother over the years, with avid golfers and also those who prefer to lie on the beach. Sometimes we have dinners in our condos ( with a couple of families teaming up being the host for the others) and have also gone out to different restaurants as a group.
