Am I insane?

Ok I know I may catch serious grief for this...but here it goes...

I have ADRs booked for our upcoming trip in 9 days...however the more I think about it, the more I'm thinking of cancelling all of them and just finding places to eat on the fly once we're down there.

My reasoning? I just don't feel like having ADRs dictate where I have to be at any given time. I'm not such a food snob that I turn my nose up at certain resturants. I can find something great to eat anywhere! We're using the dining plan and I'll have my Disney Experience App that I can look at availabilites on the fly...that way no matter where we are we just find a place with seating.

So...am I insane for wanting to be ADR free?

I don't think you are crazy at all. For a 7 day trip we only have 3 adr's. Well, I thought only 3 my hubby made a surprise reservation for me. Sci Fi Dine In (one of my favs). And all of them are new to us (except Sci Fi). Usually we just eat at a QS and get back at it. We are very excited, we are trying Boma for the first time. Our daughter wanted to try it for her 16th bday. So we are headed there.:D

I used to plan out all our meals. But my husband hated it, he felt like going on vacation with a giant itinerary was overwhelming, and it was a little too much at times. Other times though especially when it was busier he was extremely grateful. Then we joined DVC and we had full kitchen on our last vacation. So I made 3 or 4 ADR's at some of our kids favorite meals and then the rest we left up to chance knowing that no matter what we could go back to our villa and cook spaghetti or some other easy meal that I had brought. That was our most relaxed trip yet. So in my long rambling way I think you are very progressive in your move to go with the flow. No matter what you can always walk up and eat at a counter service place.

Have a lovely trip!

A few years back we got a party of 9 into 'Ohana during MK fireworks by calling ahead a few hours! I don't know if we were just lucky or what...
A few years ago, 'Ohana wasn't as popular as it is now. If you want to go there again, an ADR is a good idea now. In a few more years, it won't be the popular place any longer. :)

These things go in cycles. :) As long as Restaurant Marrakesh never becomes the popular place, I'm good. :D

We tend to have about 5 or so ADR's and usually 2 or so are for lunch, so we do a evening ADR meal in MK, DHS, and Epcot during the week long trip. If you know you want to eat at a specific place make the ADR, if not just go with the flow.

For the last few years I have always made ADRs, but when we decided to do a long weekend a few weeks ago I just didn't feel like making ADRs and I knew we weren't going to have a lot of time because it was a short trip. For us it was well close to a disaster! We realized that we don't know much about the QS at WDW cause we always have ADRs! We ended up doing a lot of extra walking trying to see what each place had and what if anything we wanted. On the other hand we did like not being stuck to a schedule and we did find some very yummy food that we probably would not have had otherwise! I would suggest if you go ADR free that you have in mind the QS places you want to eat, a little pre-planning will be very helpful.

It is only insane if it will drive you nuts not having reservations for places. I think it sounds terrific!

It all depends on your attitude. If you were feeling bogged down by the ADRs, then not having them reflects that attitude. I guess once you get down there, you will realize if you are truly a strict ADR person or more go with the flow.

I am stuck between wanting the freedom, and wanting to make sure we get to go to the places we want.
As I am already aced out of BoG, I have tried to take the approach of half and half. I made a couple ADRs for character breakfasts, and a couple for lunches and dinners. Except for the character breakfasts, I consider none of these set in stone. They are there if we choose to use them. The only thing that truly scares me is having nowhere to eat dinner expect QS. Back when we last went to WDW, getting into a restaurant at 9:30 or whatever didn't matter. Now with a 3 yr old, we have to go about things differently. Not to mention my dad is an extremely picky (and boring) eater. So that will severely limit where we can go.

Good luck! I hope the new plan works out for you!

No, you are not insane. We went in Feb with no ADR's. Now, it was a last minute not long planned trip but still, no ADR's. It was liberating and free. Would I do that for a long trip - nope, no way, nadda. But i'm an OCD planner and like to have great dining booked and its something we look forward to.

I would have kept them all...you have 24 hours to cancel...would be pretty easy to play it by ear and figure out what you want to do the next day and not be dictated by your ADR's.
I just made my ADR's for our November trip last weekend - I asked what the cancellation policy on them is and the the CM said "as long as you call by 10pm the night before you are alright." I had called about making one more breakfast reservation for our last day - he said that they reservations office closes at 11pm so I would need to call by 10pm. So I agree just - I'll just make up my mind about things the day before - I like knowing I have a plan - however, DH is not a planner - he does appreciate that I take care of it all and that I have learned to be flexible - cancelling is not the end of the world.
