I have to go with "the mom" on this one. too many times big names get nothing but a slap on the wrist, all because they have power. I don't claim to know who iverson is, but I do know that he pushes the boundries of the law. excellent example- He was on house arrest, and since he couldn't leave, he had a big party at his house. Had he been an normal citizen, this would not be acceptable. He may be a great guy, but as far as this situation, I do not feel that "the mom" is out of her boundries on this.
I don't THINK I'm a decent person, I know it! Mind you, I didn't say I was PERFECT or even good...just decent. However, I strive to to be the best person I can be, and do all that I can to make this world a better place. My very humanity gives me the right to judge someone else, just as it gives you that same right. If someone murders a child (or anyone), do I say "Sorry, I don't have the right to judge you or say that I think you're a bad person?" Do you think Jeffrey Dahmer thought he was a bad person? Then I can't judge him? We should leave it up to the individual to judge himself?
If someone mugs my mother, or anyone, I don't have the right to judge him/her?
And I'd better not serve on a jury again..

I'm sorry, this is really none of my business, but...
Bamboo, when I saw your post about all journalists being "scum," I was insulted because you were judging me.
Then, you tell Mom that she has no right to judge someone else.
To make a blanket statement that all journalists are "scum" is to merely broadcast how much you don't know. The criminal journo I work with was honored by a victims' rights group for her hard work and ethical conduct--going beyond the obvious to show how crime affects more than just the person accused and convicted.
And FanofDisney1981, you have to understand that as part of the viewing public, you DO care who has the breaking news--you tune into the broadcasts (or pick up the papers) of those outlets that are telling you something new--not the ones that are telling you things you heard two days ago from the competition! Journalists are under a lot of pressure to make sure they have all the angles and that they don't get "beat" by the competition. With a handful of exceptions, journalists don't make that much money. I make more teaching in a public high school than I would if I took the full time reporter jobs I've been offered--by big-name newspapers, too--not the local community weekly. I write for a paper with a circulation of over 250,000 on weekends, about half that weekdays.
And as for the original question about Iverson's mom, I would have remained calm and made sure I set the woman up to look like a fool.

I do see where you are coming from, but I myself do not care who breaks it first. because 9 times out of 10, there is something misunderstood, or misinformed. I always read 3 or 4 different articles on each thing that intersets me, that way I may get all angles. and I always take everything with a grain of salt. sometimes 2.
I do, however, respect those in the business. sure, there are some bad apples, but overall, you do get the news to us. I only ask that you give only the truth, and even if is hard, keep personal reflections out of a news report.

Okay, here's a perfect example: I should be filing my story, and I am procrastinating by hanging out here. LOL!
You are very wise to read multiple accounts of things to get the best perspective. That's what journalists do--we come in to work and read the competition, read our own paper cover to cover--every day. Good journalists will look for the holes in the coverage--what aren't we asking? Where haven't we looked? And those "stupid" questions we ask--sometimes we just need someone to say it, because if it's a judgement, we can't draw the conclusion for you. I can't say *I* think anything--I need a professional involved with whatever it is to say it.
I respectfully disagree with you on not caring who has a story first--it's always a crap shoot when it comes to breaking news. Do you go with what you have or do you wait for the rest to be filled in? Because like I said, people watch who has the news first. The ratings bear that out--case in point, when major disaster strikes, CNN's numbers spike. Once they get to repeating the same stuff over and over, the numbers fall again. The initial rush is over--people found the "breaking" news they wanted, and the other news agencies will catch up and you can return to "regular" coverage. That's the way it is. CNN depends on crisis to survive (sad, but true), and we as a democratic republic have come to depend on outlets like CNN to carry that information in real time. If you think it doesn't matter, think again: look how quickly the stock market falls based on news reports--within minutes, sometimes.
And if you want to eat well, don't be a journalist. Most of them do it because they love what they do--asking questions, figuring things out, telling the story--they surely don't do it for the paycheck (unless you're Katie Couric).

It also depends on the market you are in...the reason Katie Couric makes so much money is because she works for a national network, broadcasting to sooo many people...she also has worked her way up the scale...she just didn't walk in one day to NBC and start hosting...
I have a lot of respect for journalists (sorry this is getting off topic), but imagine waking up early, going in, getting your assignment, researching, hitting dead ends, putting your package together, and having it ready for the five o'clock show...and depending on your producer, and breaking news, your story may or may not make it...
And I care who breaks it first!

I have every right to judge someone who is in the public spotlight.........
He doesn't realize his life is basketball, it's not being a thug and hanging out with his "boyzzzz," throwing his wife out on the street, trying to be a gangster rapper!!!!
I have every right to also label him as a THUG and a criminal, WHY????? Maybe because he's already served prison time, six months or so in HIGH SCHOOL(that's ridiculous, who does jail time in high school???). He should realize how lucky he is and stop all this thug non-sense.
You JUDGE a KNOWN criminal, at least I do!!!!!!
I still can't believe the guy landed himself on the cover of NBA 2k, 2k1 and 2k2, I know one thing, his is gone from that cover!!!!!

It's too bad that sports stars, musicians, actors, etc., aren't issued a sense of responsibility along with their fame. Kids look up to these people; for some kids, they're the only role models in their lives, period. It's unfair to expect stars to be perfect - after all, who is? - but fame can be a dangerous power, especially when handled so carelessly.
