All Things Jungle Cruise

This site has pretty much every Jungle Cruise joke you can think of. It's based on the Disneyland ride, so it also includes jokes about Indiana Jones, Light Magic, etc. And plenty of quotes from Maynard!:)

I was once fortunate to get what the Skipppers call a "skipper Crusie" this is usually when it's just skippers and friends of skippers on the boat and they let out a load of off color but very funny jokes. When it's CM joking with CM's you never know what is going to come out of there mouth but it was fun!

Just bringing this thread up again.

Hey, I heard the jokes on the ride came later at DL. What was the original ride like? Did they have a serious approach or was it more tame? Or am I mistaken and the jokes have always been there?

I'm sorry if I missed something...I am new and blonde. Do you drive buses at WDW? If so, I wanna know which ones. I would love to ride and listen to you. We've had boring drivers, but the fun ones, my kids love!!!! So do I!!!!

Great idea. I'll just have to work some magic on the next trip!

It's really a shame they're stuck to the script now. I love to ride it over and over - each time before, it was different. :(

Tyler...I am SO going to track you down. I LOVE Disney bus drivers...the bus ride is a highlight every time. Who knows, we probably HAVE met!

I'm at my best at park close, with a full & active audience... I really play with them... hehe...

During the day, if my bus is half empty, I really don't do a whole lot, since most of my stuff works best with reactions and whatnot.

I've had some great opportunities. Once, a bus driver put "VIP" on the bus...it was quite hilarious!

Other times, we'd get asked trivia questions.

"What was Bambi's first word?"
*From my seat: BIRD! I KNOW! IT WAS BIRD!*

"The names of the three possums in Splash Mountain?"

We'd be asked to sing the Mickey Mouse Club march. Only a few of us knew all the words!

I stumped a driver once with the 5 mystic words from Bedknobs and Broomsticks. :)

Then, one day, there was this cast thing going on. The bus driver: If you're happy and you know it, clap your hands. Later, at the CBJ (after arriving at the MK), the Cast Members did the same thing. I'm not quite sure what was up that day... :lookaroun

You guys are SO awesome. You REALLY make a whole heck of a lot more magic. :sohappy:

Long as you are not that bus driver who likes to take tired wore out guests at the end of the day on the scenic route before going to your resort.

I think that quote should have a link in there for you.

I've seen a few clips of it from the 50s, and I am thinking it was more of an "adventure" ride, more serious and all. I do know that Marc Davis helped rework the attraction, adding such scenes as the elephant pool and the safari guys up a pole. I am guessing that this reworking he worked on was the first addition of a comedy approach. Then I suppose after the attraction got really old (this is one of the oldest that are still around) and the "adventure" part of the ride was really lost because of the oldness of technology and animatronics, etc, they decided to make the skipper the real star of the show and have all the jokes be the main bit. I think this is great, because it can be so easy to update the attraction!

Frankly, what I think would be a good idea is if Disney gave skippers a TON of different jokes to use at different parts of the ride to make it different and add a little variety to each performance. I guess it could be considered dangerous to "add lib" where a skipper might say something offensive, but they could serously approve a bunch of different jokes to make it fun iin that way.

I hear that the Great Movie Ride is getting this type of script makeover...I can't wait!!

Hey guys, I REALLY don't think they're stuck to a specific script. I went on JC last November, twice. I got two different skippers, and two different rides, including the jokes. The monorail joke that Tyler referred to was even in the first time around. There were several I heard on one and not the other, and vice versa.

The official word on the spieling is that they have cracked down on a lot of the skippers. The skippers still and will always have limited freedom on their spiels (there's usually 4-5 joke choices per scene). Unofficially, as long as the skipper stays in "theme" and doesn't offend anyone and get caught, then there is a bit more freedom. A lot of the more "seasoned" skippers will stay off the beaten path until they get busted, then they lay low for awhile before getting back off the path.

My favorite unapproved joke was at the entrance to the temple... "there's no telling what's on the other side of this...knowing Disney, it's probably a gift shop!"

 When we rode it in Dec. I heard a joke of Britney Spears. But I just can't think of it! It was funny though. I always find myself getting a huge kick outta the jokes. And sometimes, I'm the only one laughing!

Hey guys...this is the perfect thread for me! How did I miss this!

I was a Jungle Skipper from late 2001 until oct 2002 I loved it! Best job ever! Of course I am a real ham, and I would pull marathons on the boat ALL the time!

As for varying on the script, it depended on who was the lead on any given day. Some were super strict and some were like..umm..don't vary on you script...wink wink nudge nudge. You just had to know who was on duty and how to read people...same with any work at WDW.

I had so many great jokes and some really bad ones too...like in the temple: crouching tiger..hidden skipper! look, its the baboon family reunion "Pat Baboon, Daniel Baboon and world famous hair stylist Vidal Baboon!"...oh and look its the golden girls "thank you for being a friend!"

Sometimes in the temple I would sing the boat ride song from Willy Wonka..."No one knows which way we are going..out side is it raining is it snowing..." That was always kinda creepy cool fun!

Man I miss the jungle...sniff sniff.....now...GET OFF MY BOAT!!!

I highly reccomend getting a copy of the "Jungle Cruise Survival Guide". It is a must for any Jungle Cruise fan, like me.
It is the training manual for Disneyland's JC, from the mid 1990's. At that time they were really getting serious about speil rides, and the guy in charge of JC and some others wrote this manual.
It is dated June 18, 1938, and gives the history of the "Jugle Trading Company", provides layouts of the rivers and boathouse.
It even suggests several characters the skippers can play, and provides the official speil along with approved variations.

Interesting read, and quite funny.
