All 3D movies going to HD?

Guys...

HD has about 1/3 the visual information that film has. So if it's a film strip, "going to HD" means a downgrade of quality. Maybe he meant to say digital projection, which would make slightly more sense.

Sheesh.

+1 I was cringing at the responses that people thought "HD" was higher resolution than film.

My guess is that he didn't really mean HD (as in 1920 x 1080) but digital. 4K projectors can easily beat all but the most pristine 35 mm prints, and I'm sure higher resolution more specialized ones can be made which rival Imax quality.

Now, take this with a big grain of salt, but... It was explained to me once by a Soarin' CM in the pre-show area that the DCA version was built with very expensive "clean rooms" that house the IMAX projectors above each theater. It's a system where all dust and minor particles are kept out of the projector rooms via a pressure gradient and advanced filtration system. It's expensive to install and expensive to maintain, and it ensures the film quality stays very good in a film system that is running continually, in addition to WDI coming in several times per year and swapping out the film itself for new prints of the film. This same DCA CM stated that the Epcot version of the ride was not installed with this same IMAX "clean room" technology, but rather a more standard and cheaper HVAC system with a filter, and that is why the Epcot films suffer faster and more noticeable degradation of quality
No salt at all.

Wait, I'm not very good with my "grain of salt" analogies.

Does that mean the DCA Cast Member was right? Or was the DCA CM wrong and Epcot's version of Soarin' built with the same expensive "clean room" technology as DCA's?

Soarin' needs to be upgraded in some way...

It's a fantastic attraction and deserves a refurb! But it just so happens to be the most popular attraction in Epcot, so... It faces somewhat of the same issue as Everest (too popular to close down for now).

I wouldn't hate to see Soarin' go 3D. With Star Tours' 3D being AWESOME, Disney can really pull off the depth perception effect.

From what I've heard, the DCA CM was spot on. (Or is that dust speck on?)

Ah, okay, thanks.

That makes sense then; the DCA version always looks great to me, even a decade after it opened. The Epcot version that opened in '05? Well, those "floaters" and scratches on the Epcot version certainly don't sit well with this Californian!

I wonder if this is ever something they could go back in and fix at Epcot? Perhaps install the expensive "clean room" technology and then factor in the increased maintenance costs for future years? Or perhaps this is something like the two Pirates rehabs that WDW and DLR got in '06; Disneyland got the full-tilt version with every speaker and light fixture swapped out, while WDW only got a few speakers and fixtures replaced. They never have gone back and brought the WDW version of Pirates up to the Disneyland technology standard, and it's been five years now.

And Disneyland's Pirates is currently closed for an extensive three month rehab, reopening at Thanksgiving. That's the third rehab the Disneyland Pirates has received since it was majorly redone in '06, and I can't find any evidence of any sort of rehab in that same time at the WDW Pirates. :veryconfu

3d is clearly not the answer...a new print is

I'm sure they change the prints regularly. Film only can cycle through a hot projector for so long before it breaks or tears.

What is apparently needed is the more expensive DCA facility and maintenance budget. Epcot needs the "clean rooms" that I was told all about by a Soarin' CM at DCA. Go ride the version at DCA and see what it looks like after a decade of use. Epcot just needs the same budget that DCA uses to operate Soarin'.

I was there a few weeks ago and was very disappointed in the quality of the one theater. Had I known the poor quality I would have skipped. Luckily the second time through I asked to ride on the other simulator and it was quite nice. (The funny part is : The bad film is usually the one that the Fast Pass people go into)

What is needed is for WDW to provide a quality show for the price people pay to go there. How many ride attractions does Epcot really have? (not as many as the other parks) And they can't keep one of their top attractions working in good shape?

The Simpsons over at universal looks fantastic and it is digital projection, I think doing that to Soarin would rock.

Soarin shouldn't go digital or 3-D, but it does need a new film. It simply makes no sense why you are only flying over California while you are at Epcot which has nothing to do with California. It I were to change it, I'd have the film fly over different natural wonders of the world thus tying into the theme of the Land pavillion and Epcot better.

The 3-D films HAVE to go digital though. Digital has much more convincing 3-D and its much cleaner looking. Plus like others have mentioned, its cheaper and easier to operate. I don't see why TDO would see a downside to this.
