Alcohol Question

My DW and I will be taking our first cruise ever on a five night cruise aboard the Disney Wonder in May.:sohappy:

Before we sail…we’ll fly in on a Friday and be transported from MCO via the ME to the AK to spend two nights at Kidani Village. We plan on spending Saturday at EPCOT. Sunday morning they take us via motor coach to the port for the cruise. DCL is the only cruise line that allows the passengers to carry on their own alcohol, you just need to have it in your carry on. While soda, coffee and tea are free on board the ship, obviously the alcohol isn’t. We would like to pick up a bottle of something to enjoy on board, perhaps a bottle of Captain Morgan to mix on our own to help save a couple of bucks. Without a car at WDW this might be difficult to find.

Does anybody know how or where we can purchase a bottle for our trip once we arrive in WDW while we’re at the mercy of Disney transportation? I don’t think that packing a bottle in our luggage when we’re flying is a real good idea.:hammer:

You can buy some bottles in the World Showcase (France, Japan, Italy). The deluxe resorts also sell it.

Have a great trip!! :)

Without a car you are really stuck with only the resort gift shops. You could of course take a cab but unless you plan on bringing a serious amount of alcohol with you any savings would be negated by the cab ride.

That's what I was thinking. Someone once told me that you can buy spirits at the gas station across the street from DTD...If we go there Saturday night I might check it out.

I know they have beer but I am not sure about spirits. Of course I have never looked either but it is quite possible that they will have it.

Why not just pack it from home? Resort prices are crazy at WDW and getting to and from the off-site venues takes time away from your vacation. I've travelled with bottles well-protected in luggage without any problem. Wrapped in a bath towel and then in a plastic bag 'just in case' has been fine.

I agree with MontyMon to really save any money your going to have to bring it from home. If you pack the bottles well and wrap them up you should be fine. I would take the protective measure of putting the bottles in a zip-lock bag first. Youll smell like a true alcoholic otherwise. :)

Yes and a little bubble wrap helps too if the bottles are glass. A friend of mine used to live in Germany and would bring a couple bottles of wine with her in her checked luggage and she would pack them in bubble wrap and then large ziplock bags.

Yeah, I dropped a carry on with a bottle of Caymanian Rum in it in the airport once.

That was one sweet smelling bag. :)

Many times I've carried bottles of rum in my luggage to Disney World.
I just put it in with my clothes wrapped in a plastic bag. No special packing at all.
Never had any problems with one disappearing, breaking or opening.

You could always bribe a CP to get you some, since the Walgreen's liquor store is walking distance from the apartments.

But seriously, you could also look to buy some while in port in Nassau. There is a store right on Bay St (the shopping street) that sells Cuban cigars (why I went) and some liquor. I remember the prices, being high, but not crazy. I never bought the liquor there, cause crew members can't have liquor bottles in their rooms (beer and wine are a different story). The "drink of the day" were $3.95 on the ship. They are usually fruity, tropical concoctions. They also sell a beer mug that you can get refilled at cheaper prices as well. Also, find a favorite bartender and tip well. They may make some extra "magic" for you!

We always bring some from home, but when we run out have bought various spirits from Everything Pop at Pop Century. I know they sell whisky, brandy and bacardi, I'm not sure about dark rum. The AK shop does sell some but I don't remember exactly what.

Does anyone know if the small grocery store at the Boardwalk sells wine? I'm thinking they do (although I'm sure it's marked up a lot) but can't remember from last time I was there.

If you are flying in to ORD just get some duty-free liquor. It will be way cheaper than at the resorts- make sure you put it in your carry-on if taking ME.

Steve said earlier that the Deluxe resorts sell wine. We are staying at BLT in August. Does anyone remember what kind of prices we're looking at if we buy a bottle of wine at the Contemporary?

You are not going to find anything great. Think Gallo.

I would say you are going to find $8 wine for about $14

You can get some decent stuff in EPCOT in the world showcase. But it is a small selection, and expect to pay through the nose.

My wife enjoys the wine and champagne in France. I'm not a fan of the stuff, but she said the selection was decent, and the prices weren't too onerous for Disney....

Thanks Dave.

I'm guessing that perhaps one of us can pack up two or three bottles in the luggage and bring our own. Does anyone know of any good travel products for wine bottles? We could probably just wrap bottles in plastic bags and then bath towels, but I'll bet there are some decent hard case wine carriers out there.

I emailed the Garden Grocer folks and they told me they'd deliver wine and beer but the delivery charge is $12 and the minimum food purchase is $40. We're probably not going to be ordering $40 worth of groceries (being as we'll be eating in restaraunts most of the time) so the premium for that service ends up being pretty inflated.
