Bump.

So I was on Youtube and I found this behind the scenes video on the making of the Aladdin Broadway Musical featuring commentary from the Director/Choreographer, show lyricist/writer, Menken, and Schumacher uploaded a couple weeks ago:

My favorite part of the clip is when Thomas says: "If you're going run a room, you're gonna have to have a point of view, you need to have gigantic talent, and you have to know how to bring everyone together on the same page".

Can't wait to see it!

I wish I could convince my H to go see this, but I've barely managed to get him to go to Beauty and the Beast in April by making it my anniversary present:).

I am really rooting for this show. I'm still slightly sad that they had to close Mary Poppins for it, so I'm hopeful this is done well and connects well with the audience so it justifies the loss of a long-running musical. The last thing Disney Theatrical needs is a repeat of the removal of the amazing Beauty and the Beast for the flop that was the Little Mermaid.

My wife and I really want to see this. Neither of us have ever seen a show up in NY and I would love for this to be our first one. Guess we will see.

I reviewed the show in Toronto last month -- not great -- my review is here:
http://a2view.com/2013/12/31/disneys-aladdin-the-musical-toronto-review-pre-broadway/

IN general, the Toronto review consensus is that the show is uneven, that it doesn't have the normal "Disney magic" and that the leading lady has to be replaced --- none of which is going to happen, as the show was pretty much set in Toronto. I don't expect many changes at all.

Of all the Disney on Broadway productions, this was my least favorite -- and I know many of the people involved in putting this together -- it's a topnotch group, can not place what the problem is -- but I'll begin with the less-than-stellar movie that it is based on as a start....

Although I haven't seen the show yet, I have been following the progress of the show very closely right from the moment it was announced that Mary Poppins was closing. I have read reviews from Toronto, although I have a hard time believing that it was hardly as bad as some of the reviews make it out to be.

A lot of reviews said that Jasmine was a spoiled brat and was all together horrendous. This might be due to one of her songs that is intended to "Scare off potential suitors". The song is called "Call me a Princess" and was written by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman for the original film, not the show. Although this song was in Toronto, it was recently announced that the song had been cut from the show itself and replaced. (http://aladdinmusical.blogspot.com/2013/12/a-new-song-for-jasmine-and-d23-fan.html)

Disney also really wants this show to do as well as it possibly can, as they do not want a repeat of the little mermaid. (I.E. closing a show that is doing well for a show that does not do well) And although I thought little mermaid was a great show, it opened at the wrong time, because of both the stage hand strike which delayed its opening and more importantly the economy fell!

And also, JONATHAN FREEMAN IS PLAYING JAFAR! Think about how awesome that is on it's own! Plus James Monroe Iglehart does an Incredible job as the Genie, and Adam Jacobs is amazing as Aladdin! Not to mention the INCREDIBLE creative team they have working on this! Casey Nicholaw, Chad Beguelin, Bob Crowley, Gregg Barnes and Nastasha Katz to just name a few! Now if you ask me, it sounds like it's shaping up to be one of greatest that not only Disney, but Broadway has ever seen!
