The movie's biggest foreign market has been Japan, with nearly $100 million made as of this date, making it the #1 release of the year so far in the country.

I thought that was interesting, and then I found out the person who did the dub for Genie in the original, did so for this remake.

Here in the US we're arguing if Will Smith can fill Robin Williams' shoes, but in Japan it's a non issue for them, lol.

Disney movies have a much bigger market share in 2019 than in 2010. TLK should do at least Aladdin numbers.

Just got home from seeing Aladdin.

We absolutely loved it. Aladdin was charming, Jasmine was a more fleshed out character and I liked her story

I've never ever liked Will Smith as he hasn't been my cup of tea but loved him in this. So many laughs. I found Jafar a little weak but can look past it.

Easily the best of Disneys live action remakes
I’ve seen it six times! Clearly I also really enjoyed it.
Will Smith stole the show for me. Robin who?

Aladdin has now made over $100 million in Japan, and I've updated the chart to show this.

As a comparison, here's the top 10 Disney titles in the USA, since 2014 (as of this post):

Star Wars: The Force Awakens $936 million
Avengers: Endgame $857 million
Black Panther $700 million
Avengers: Infinity War $678 million
Star Wars: The Last Jedi $620 million
The Incredibles 2 $608 million
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story $532 million
Beauty and the Beast $504 million
Finding Dory $486 million
Avengers: Age of Ultron $459 million

Vs Japan

Frozen $249 million (#1 in 2014)
Beauty and the Beast $110 million (#1 in 2017)
Aladdin $101 million (#1 in 2019...so far)
Star Wars: The Force Awakens $97 million (#1 in 2015)
Big Hero 6 $76 million (#3 in 2014)
Zootopia $70 million (#3 in 2016)
Star Wars: The Last Jedi $66 million (#2 in 2017)
Finding Dory $65 million (#4 in 2016)
Maleficent $63 million (#4 in 2014)
Pirates 5 $59 million (#5 in 2017)

Note how the USA list is almost exclusively Marvel, Star Wars and Pixar, while in Japan those three brands COMBINED add up to 3 titles.

The Japanese love Disney, "Disney" Disney to be specific. That's probably why the 6 rides opening at TDR in the next few years are all based on WDFA releases. During "Costume Days" at TDR (aka Halloween) nobody is allowed to dress up as Marvel characters and there is no Marvel presence at the resort. I don't think the Japanese mind.

I enjoyed this new Aladdin... a lot more than the new Lion King. It was light, brisk and nice to look at, evoking a theme park experience in ways. The odd scene with the princess singing the new song near the end could have been left on the cutting room floor.

Lion King was fine. Also, visually beautiful but with more weak points than Aladdin.

I'm okay with the live action remake trend. If nothing else, it's interesting to see the adaptation/translation aspect.

I'm okay with it too, as long Disney adds a new spin to it and adds on top of the original.
Aladdin did exactly that. They introduced new story elements like the genie's family plot in the beginning tied to the end revelation (ahhh moment for me). Dalia's character as a whole. They changed up Jafar's character a bit and sorta gave him a backstory. Basically it wasn't a carbon copy, shot-for-shot remake.

As for TLK, I haven't seen it yet, but I heard it's exactly that. A replica of the original.
BatB was sorta the same too imo.

I agree. Guy Richie struck the right balance of nostalgia and distinctiveness.

I'd like to see the Middle Eastern Pulp Adventure genre (e.g. Sinbad, 1,001 Nights) get revived. There will almost certainly be a sequel to this Aladdin, but I'd also like to see a PotC-style swashbuckler big budget re-imagining of the Sinbad legends.

I also enjoyed the film and what Will Smith brought to the part of the Genie. I have yet to see The Lion King and I suspect that is different and I believe I also will enjoy it as well.

"We are going to treat it the same way we treat the original Aladdin movie and not going to do a shot by shot remake of anything that's been done before."

Yes, exactly this!

Aladdin was much better than I thought. I saw it today and it was actually one of only a few disney live action remakes I thoroughly enjoyed watching. Will Smith gave an amazing performance. It's currently my second favorite remake after Jungle Book, on par with Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast.

Well Aladdin the live action was wonderfully made imo!
I am not a fan of Disney live action but thank goodness they did a wonderful job.
Aladdin which is my favorite Disney cartoon movie along with jasmin being my favorite princess was an awesome remake movie.
These two are so beautiful together and on the screen had remarkable chemistry! I fell in love again with the story. The rest of the cast did a great job too. And all that genie talk that no one can replace robin williams genie is true and nobody ever will but will smith did a great job and I’m sure robin from above was proud.
I love Aladdin ❤😎.
Sorry if my reply is duplicated lol. Was watching movie again
