AK & Epcot?

Realistically how much time should I plan to spend at Epcot & AK with an 8 year old and a 6 year old? From all I have been reading it seems like the majority of our time will be in MK and HS. We are going for 6 nights/7 days.

If possible, 2 days each for MK and Epcot and one day each for DHS and AK.

A lot of people feel this or that park is "a half-day park." That's because they've been there before, know what they like and don't like, can get in and do the stuff they like in half a day and get out. If you've never been there, all the parks can easily fill a day.

Many, many people make the mistake of thinking, "My kids won't like Epcot. It's not a kids' park," but most of them are very wrong about that! My own sister couldn't be convinced. Swore up and down her kids would like DHS and MK best, and in that order. Didn't think they'd care for Epcot at all. Both rated Epcot their favorite, with AK and MK rated second. Both put DHS last.

It's hard to know what your kids will like, especially if you haven't been there. :)

AK is a must do in my opinion for that age group. My son has been at the age of 5, 7 and 9 and we always go to AK for a full day and return for part of another. We always see something new.

I find it is nice to hit DAK in the morning with little ones ( they are up already anyway..).
It is a 'half day Park', so plan on spending the first half of a day there and then either head back to your hotel for 'nap time' /midday break or hit another Park.

DAK usually closes at dusk...so depending on your little ones energy levels you can decide whether you want to try a few more hours in another Park or call it a night.

I often pair a visit to DAK during the day with EPCOT's World Showcase for the evening. A lovely combo.

It's nearly impossible to generalize what 8 and 6 year-olds will like.

I was never sure what my own children would like at that age, never mind trying to guess what a complete stranger might like.

I will provide one generalization though. Expect them to want to spend time at the hotel pool.:)

We spend more like 1/2 day at AK (rope drop until about 1:30pm, concluding with a CS lunch -- this includes everything except the Bone Yard, Rafiki's Planet Watch and Kali River Rapids, and includes only one character M&G and one of the three live shows.) If you stayed until closing on a day with average-or-less crowds, you could easily do every last attraction in the entire park without breaking a sweat.

Epcot takes 1 1/2 days for us. After spending half a day at AK and going back to the resort for naps and swimming, we get to Epcot around 4pm and do most of Future World, including all the attractions, Club Cool and Character Spot (skipping only Ellen's Energy Adventure and the Innoventions buildings) by 8:30pm, with a TS dinner. The next day, we revisit our favorite attractions in Future World and browse the Innoventions buildings from rope drop until World Showcase opens at 11am. We then tour half of World Showcase (doing the Maelstrom, Mexican boat ride and American Adventure), have lunch, and go back to the resort for naps and swimming. We return that evening to tour the rest of World Showcase and have a relaxing TS dinner. On our way out of the park, we revisit the kids' favorite attractions (Mission: Space and Spaceship Earth) in Future World.

We could make Epcot a 2-day park if the kids had any interest in meandering through World Showcase. (They're only 5 and 7). It's the only part of Disney World for which they really don't care, although I expect they'll enjoy it more and more as they get older.

With 6 nights and 7 days, you can easily spend a day at AK and 2 at Epcot, leaving you another full day for HS and 3 days at MK. (Since AK tends to close early, your AK day is a good one to use for dinner shows, a particularly fancy sit-down dinner or a trip to Disney Springs, formerly Downtown Disney, to cap off the evening.) MK, beyond any question, holds the most interest for my entire family, with Epcot a close second. DH and I are indifferent to HS (Rock 'n' Rollercoaster and Tower of Terror are great, but motion sickness and height requirements disqualify everyone in the family but me), although our children really love the Disney, Jr. show, TSMM and Star Tours. Candidly, sometimes it feels to DH and I like we visit HS and AK mainly for "purposes of completeness" and not because we're thrilled by the attractions they offer.
