Airlines cut thousands of jobs

Air Canada just announced they were cutting over 2,000 jobs and cutting flights to the US by 13%...geez, I already can't get a direct flight to Disney now I probably won't get a flight at all

They gave costs per passengers for the average flight (not sure what average is but...) in 2004 it was $118 per pax, this year over $250 per pax. (this is what it costs the airlines...not the passengers, just to clarify) This all due to gas prices of course.

The ecnomists predictions are:
only the wealthy will be able to fly (is that new?)

Half of airlines running today will be bankrupt within 10 years

Montreals airport will close within 15-20 years (that being one of two major one's in central Canada for those of you not familiar) and many airports in smaller cities may close as early as 2010 with cities as far as 400km apart sharing an airport (that's approx 250 miles)

In 5 years costs are expected to soar to twice the amount as today (the economist suggested if you want to see Europe or Asia...do it now because the prices you see today may be the lowest for 20 years)

Flights are reducing speeds to save on fuel so check your arrival time if you have a flight booked...it may be later than you think

Boeing is working on a more fuel efficient plane but no idea how long it will take to become a reality

Many airports feel they have been wasting money in the past 15 -20 years on bigger and better buildings and now they may have to close them due to reduced passengers and rising costs

Sorry for the bleak news but i thought i would share.

So who wants to come to Disney World with me while i can still get a cheap (relatively speaking) flight

I do not know about the UK or Canada, But the US Goverment will bail out the airlines once again with our tax money like they did so many years ago.

Does anyone remember when the all the Airlines in the US were regulated?

Wonder what the UK visitors are seeing for airfare increases?

:)

Well I have 2 Disney trips booked for this year but so far only have the room reservations.

Was planning to hold on and hope the flights would go down but oh no that does not seem to be happening. :brick:

I remember the days when I could get direct to Orlando for about £250 but last year it cost me £370.

Now for my November and December trips the current prices are £580 - £650! Ouch!!!!!!!

Doesn't help that im going at christmas so that adds cost but im just hoping they come down a little. I was hoping for £400 a flight but I dont think thats gonna happen!

Can get stop over flights cheaper but the times are not very good and have got to fly out of the way to get there! Flights to Detroit then down are about £360 - £400 but with stops its about 17 or 18 hours travel compared to 9 direct!

Well Im going whatever even if I have to beg borrow and steal the money for the flight! :ROFLOL:

I think some of those things the OP posted may happen, like some smaller airports closing but I don't think the picture as a whole is that bleak.

The travel industry is still one of the largest industries in the world and it relies on air travel. You not only have tourist travel you also have business travel which is often necessary. Government (not just US) cannot just let the airlines close up shop and go away. That would put an even bigger hurt on the global economy.

I'm not saying that things are going to turn around any time soon and be all rosey and you may never see a $150 r/t from NY to Orlando again (not that you can find one today) but it probably won't get near $500.

Short term (next 5-6 years) prices are going to be tough. However in the long term ther will be bail outs, consolidations, layoffs, expansions, new airlines and yet to be names alternative solutions that will also have an effect on the industry.

I think to say that air travel for the average person is dead is an exaggeration right now.
