Air quality in Anaheim.

Meanwhile, in Communist China where smog still exists, they have a hard time seeing down to the end of Main Street.

Is China (the largest polluter and among the dirtiest air) really the standard that we should be comparing against ?

Communist China is a horrible place for many reasons, but the smog is the one reason that shows up in photos that even the Communist Politburo can't censor out. China also has a Disneyland with a Castle, so it's a nice compare/contrast photo.

The truth is that air quality in Southern California has vastly improved over the last 50 years, and continues to decline. That's great news!

China is a beautiful country and I have really enjoyed my time there.

California has made a real commitment to reducing pollution and the results speak for themselves. Hopefully public transportation continues to improve and get the dependence on cars down.

China does have great geographic and cultural beauty to offer. I'm glad to hear you enjoyed your time in an authoritarian Communist country that is cited by the United Nations as one of the worst abusers of human rights, growing state-sponsored torture, and routinely stifles its citizens freedom of movement, freedom of association, freedom of religion, freedom of the press, freedom of speech, and freedom of sexuality. Not to mention the growing state-sponsored repression of minority groups, particularly in the western provinces.

But I imagine you got some great pictures!

Back to air quality and cars, I'm probably dating myself but cars today emit less than 1% of the smog-producing tailpipe pollution that cars did in 1970. Just the simple 1963 mandate that all new cars have PCV valves installed instead of venting crankcase fumes into the air started a dramatic downward trend in emissions from American cars.

Just a quick comment to address Disneyland's air quality.

My wife has severe pulmonary issues and Anaheim's air (fires not included) is much easier for her to breathe than when she's in Orlando. Orlando can be a bit clearer occasionally; but, the consistently higher humidity makes the air denser and that holds more pollution.

As a photographer, the air quality differences are very easy pick up - especially with long exposures. There simply isn't the same air density that exists in Orlando. I often pull out my phone/tablet and show people the star fields that you can pick up much more consistently in Anaheim than Orlando (even with all of the light pollution from LA). This is also why projection mapping works so much better in Anaheim. On a humid night in Orlando those poor projectors waste so many lumens trying to cut through the night (of course the longer throws they have to travel don't help either).

fyi... I did much more than vacation there. Yes I'm fully aware of the situations. I would bet much more than you seeing them firsthand. What I would say is that things are much more complex than portrayed in U.S. media. We should all learn much more about the country as it is going to have a heavy influence on how America and the world operates in the years and decades to come. Simply dismissing them as a thug country is a big mistake.

The U.N. and other human rights organizations don't exactly paint the USA in the best light either, particularly since the current administration took office. Our history both past and present is full of disgraces. That's too much politics anyway, so back to the regularly scheduled program.
