Air fares February 2009

Hello all,

I have never traveled to WDW in February and am curious if air fares typically tend to run higher because of the season or if it's due to how the air travel industry has been lately?

I recently checked JetBlue's rates to change our flight (orginally booked for Oct, now going in Feb.) and I'm a little worried about it. I don't want to cancel because we'd be out a good deal of money. I guess I can keep checking my email to see if a coupon comes along...if I can even use it on this existing flight...

Thoughts?

I think it's just because of gas prices being so high that airfare tickets have gone up. Looking at May of 2009, my husband & I are finding the same thing.

Do keep checking for coupons & specials, they do come along. The airline should honor any coupon that you find if it applies to your flight. You're right that canceling would put you out even more money.

Did you try AirTran as well? They sometimes have specials that are pretty good. I know you're already booked - I don't know how canceling airline tickets goes these days, but it's something to check out.

We're flying Jan 22 and flying home Feb 3. We just booked our plane tickets last week and we got a good price. My parents also booked for the same time frame, they just live in a different city, and they got an amazing price! So I really don't think it has anything to do with that time of year.

I used kayak to find the prices (you can also use sidestep) They're pretty much the same thing. You just type in the airports you want and the dates and it will find all the flights that day, and list them from lowest to highest. It compares all airlines, except southwest, and other travel websites like expedia and orbitz to find you the best price. So, anyhow, I used this everyday for about a month or so, and watched the flights fluctuate daily and finally jumped on it when I saw a price that was actually cheaper than I thought we would end up paying.

But I was amazed at how much the airfare fluctuated in one month alone. It started out at $450 round trip and we ended up paying $280 round trip with taxes and fees and when I checked a week later, it had dropped down to $250 round trip, but popped back up a couple days later. So just watch daily and hop on it when you think it's a good price.

You can register your desired travel dates on Travelocity and it will monitor all airlines and notify you when there's a fare sale. It will save you the hassle. I was looking a few weeks ago and Airtran had a not too bad rate sale going on, but now it's off and I have to wait for the next one. I used to always fly Midwest, but since they've decided to cater to business and not pleasure travelers they no longer have a direct flight to Orlando from Milwaukee and the flight they do have is ridiculously expensive. No more in flight fresh chocolate chip cookies for us!

Also, if you can fly mid-week rather than on the weekends, it is often cheaper. We just booked for President's week and would have saved quite a bit if we were able to go later in the week.

I think we're going to stick with jetBlue. They actually have the lowest fare I've seen (so far) at $99 from IAD to MCO. Good thing is, it's the same exact time as the flight we would have taken in October. :) So that makes me happy.
