Aesthetics of City Walk

When it comes to the outside coverings for city walk I always wondered why the ivy has not covered the meshing. Does any one know why 11 years later the ivy only covers about the same area that it did after the first year of growth? Have they tried other types of ivy? Maybe try putting planters of ivy 1/3 of the way up, then 2/3 of the way up, then at the top? I feel like the benefits of having a cover fully filled up with ivy and maybe some LED lights mixed in would out weigh the meager cost and bad show of such a failed look. I have always wondered and could never get an answer out of any one who works there. If any one here as has answer it would be greatly appreciated

It must not be that big of a deal. I've been to Citywalk probably 20 times in the last 2-3 years and I have no idea what you're talking about.

Or are you talking about the Citywalk in California?

Call Universal and ask to speak to someone in there horticulture department. I have talked with them many times and even have the email addy of the manager of IOA and Citywalk hort. Hort people love people who love plants.

BTW: He is talking about the huge mesh covered walls that arch over the Cineplex and the back side of club area of citywalk. These are to the right and left just as you enter citywalk from the covered walkway from the parking garages.

Exactly. I apologize, I thought I was clear when I explained what I was talking about. Obviously not :brick:. Ok so now everyone has a picture of what I am talking about. I just feel like it is really bad show because it's obvious that the ivy was supposed to grow to the top.

The only answer I have been able to get was when I took the backstage tour at The Land at Epcot. The CM there said they used the wrong ivy. Universal apparently took ivy that grew up north and the summers in Orlando killed the new growth.

I have just wondered why, 11 years out they haven't done anything to the area to make it look right. BAD SHOW!

I would imagine that this was a case of an architects not consulting with botanists. A. There are very few cultivated vines that enjoy growing on metal. The ones that can handle metal apparently have limits on their height of growth. B. The vines that would grow all the way up would most likely be classified as weeds; too aggressive and would soon get out of control. There is a kind of vine here in Florida that would cover all of Citywalk itself if given the chance. You will see it matting dead cypress swamps along roads and highways. It is a monster plant.

That would be kudzu, it's all over the south. Believe me, if you give it a chance, it will take over everything.

Bad show? Who is going to sit there and stare at the back side of CityWalk anyway?

Its the main thing to look at as you walk in from the parking lots. Every time I walk into Universal I do STARE and wonder what happened with the planning.

Why would you consider a CM at Epcot to be an authority on something at Universal?

Just happened to think of it while taking the tour. They worked with plants, "botanist", so I thought they could answer my question.

Thanks for all the answers.

This assumes that the Epcot "botanist" knows which ivy CW is using, without necessarily having even seen it. It also assumes the the Epcot "botanist" knows what CW's intent was in using that specific ivy (hence the CM's claim that they used the "wrong ivy"...It wasn't "wrong" if that's not what CW's intent was). It also assumes the Epcot "botanist" is more of an expert than a "botanist" at CW. I'd say if you want the correct answer, contact CW directly. That way, you're getting the information from someone who has all the facts.
