ABC developing 'Cavemen'
Comedy pilot based on Geico ads

Winner for most unusual piece of development this pilot season goes to ABC, which has turned a series of quirky Geico commercials into an actual half-hour comedy project.
"Cavemen" will revolve around three pre-historic men who must battle prejudice as they attempt to live as normal thirtysomethings in modern Atlanta.

Project, from ABC TV Studio, is penned by Joe Lawson, an advertising copywriter who was behind the "Caveman" ads -- as well as other Geico commercials (think the cockney-speaking Geico gecko, and the reality TV spoof "Tiny House").

Daniel Rappaport, Guymon Cassady, Will Speck and Josh Gordon are exec producers. Speck and Gordon, commercial directors who recently helmed the Will Farrell feature "Blades of Glory," are on board to also direct.

The single-camera laffer pilot is based on the Geico ads that promote the insurance company's Web site as so user-friendly that even "a caveman could do it." The spots follow cavemen in modern settings, reacting with offense to the derogatory slogan. In one, a Geico spokesman apologizes and takes the Neanderthals out to dinner.

Other blurbs include the sensitive, modern cavemen peeved at the offending slogan while encountering Geico ads in everyday life, including the airport.

The caveman commercials were created through the Richmond, Va.-based Martin Agency. Jeff Daniel Phillips and Ben Weber play the cavemen in the Geico spots; no word if they'll make the transformation to the TV project.

Few TV shows have come out of the commercial sphere; more frequently, TV characters live on in 30-second spots long after their shows are canceled (think "ALF").

But it's not without precedence: The 2002 CBS comedy "Baby Bob" revolved around a talking baby character that was first seen in a series of dot.com ads. After the Eye canceled "Baby Bob," the character returned to its commercial roots, spending time as a pitchman (pitchbaby?) for Quizno's Subs.

I think those are the dumbest commercials. I just absolutely hate them. But, I guess not everyone does. Good luck to them.

The commercials don't bug me all that much, in fact the actors in them seem to be pretty good...but i fail to see how they are going to take this into long term status.

I agree. They are pretty annoying. I like the old Gecko commercials personally, but not the new Gecko commercials with a different guy doing the voice. He annoys me.

I think one of the cavemen is an actor on that show, Heroes.

I wonder how this sitcom of the cavemen will take off.

Jeff Daniel Phillips and Ben Weber play the cavemen, neither of which are listed in IMDb as appearing in Heroes.

Wow, that was quick research.

I don't know if he plays a main character or not. I'm not a fan of the show Heroes. But I was flipping the channel once, and caught the show, and pretty sure it was him (at least one of the cavement.) I have seen a third caveman though on another commercial.

The radioactive one right? I always wonder if that's him.

I'm not completely sure, but he might have had radioactive or some type of power like that. :)

I know that both NBC and ABC were working on developing this show. However, the last thing that I heard, they were planning on letting NBC do the show instead of ABC.

Geico's Cavemen May Get Own TV Series
AP

NEW YORK (March 2) - Those Geico "cavemen" shouldn't be so upset after all - they may get their own television series. ABC said Friday it had ordered a pilot for a comedy, tentatively titled "Cavemen," that features the characters used in a series of ads by the insurance company.

In the ads, cavemen appear insulted by a Geico pitchman's claim that the company's Web site is so easy to use that "even a caveman can do it."

The potential series, one of 14 pilots that will be produced by Touchstone Television this spring, features the cavemen as they "struggle with prejudice on a daily basis as they strive to live the lives of normal thirty-somethings in 2007 Atlanta."

It's unusual for characters from an advertising campaign to move into shows of their own, but not unprecedented. The CBS comedy "Baby Bob" featured a talking baby that had been used in several advertisements, according to Daily Variety.

The advertising copywriter who helped create the "cavemen" ads is writing the pilot, the studio said.

A pilot order is no guarantee a show will make it on the air; in fact, the majority of pilots don't make it that far.

Promos For Cavemen

They've already started running promos for it. Of course, they've cancelled shows before they've premiered ever after running a slew of promos, so we'll see what happens.
