Trip Report A Five-Year-Old's Dream Vacation

Hello, humans! My family just returned from a whirlwind, extended stay at Walt Disney World, where we tried lots of new things and extended our stay by a day and a half (because we just couldn't say goodbye!).

The family includes myself, a thirty-four-year-old Disney World lover; my husband, a forty-one-year-old Disney convert (I hope); and our five-year-old daughter, who is an emerging Disney World fanatic. This trip was the result of a promise made after our December 2014 trip. My husband told our daughter that we would return to celebrate her fifth birthday. Not one to forget anything, she started angling for her birthday trip about a year ahead of time, and I booked it in February.

By some stroke of magic, I managed to book right about the 180 day mark, which meant I was able to score a couple of coveted ADRs: Be Our Guest and Cinderella's Royal Table. More on these later. I also grabbed our room/ticket package when a modified free dining plan was offered. We received one quick service meal per person, per night. This ended up being a great decision for us, and a little research allowed us to stretch it out significantly.

But first, we had to get there. We live in the Raleigh area, so we drove. We have done many road trips in the past, including a long haul from Boston to Toronto when DD was nine months old, so this was a logical choice for us. But we have never had to do this:

IMG_2938.JPG

That's me, taking a creepy selfie whilst in the cab of a tow truck with my beautiful, beastly machine riding on the back. Oh, yes. We got a flat tire on the side of I-95 north of Daytona, Florida. My husband and I are both able to change a tire (although at seven months pregnant, I was willing to let him do most of the work), but we were missing the wheel lock key. To be honest, I didn't even know I had wheel locks on the tires, so I am absolving myself from the blame here. But what that meant logistically was the we had to be towed to a Honda dealership to have the tire replaced. Roadside Assistance found us a tow truck that could accommodate three people in the cab, but it was forty-five minutes away. The Honda dealership closed in under an hour. But humanity won out as the manager of Hendrick Honda in Daytona offered to keep members of his team past closing so that we wouldn't be stranded. And on that note, if you need any Honda help in Florida, Rich at Hendrick is your man.

We were back on the road about three hours after the initial flat, and we arrived, finally, at our destination around six p.m.

IMG_2931.jpg

We stayed at All-Star Movies. I had checked in online several days prior and made some room requests. I received the text with our room number (and a digital map of the resort) while waiting for the tow truck, so we shlepped all of our stuff directly to the room. Our bands worked perfectly, and we were in (and relieved) right away.

IMG_3303.jpg

We stayed in room 1747, which was on the backside of the first Dalmations building. The location was awesome. We were close to the lot where we parked our car for the week, and it was always quiet. Our view looked like this:

DSCF3428.JPG

The room/ticket/dining package mandated a preferred room, otherwise I wouldn't normally request one. But I was really happy with our location. The room itself was the typical value resort experience:

Snowman blanket not typically included. :p Somehow (read: by force) my daughter has inherited my genes for organization, so she put her things in a drawer and aligned her stuffed animal friends before we headed out to see the resort and obtain some food.

To Test Track we went, Fastpasses in hand! It was a cosmic intervention, I swear, that allowed us to ride without succumbing to the sixty+ minute wait. Since I hadn't been on TT for years (since well before the refurb), I chose to go through the queue with DH and DD, but I didn't ride. Sadface.

They loved it! It was fun to build the car (we let the five-year-old take over), and they enjoyed the ride itself. Evidently DD's car was first in everything except efficiency (darn gas engine). We also enjoyed the post-ride activities.

After this, we headed out to Magic Kingdom (via monorail and ferry). I was bummed to miss so much in World Showcase, but it'll all still be there when we return... in 3-5 years. ;)

Sounds like you had another great day.

I thought if used a FP on Test Track you by passed the car design area. I guess I was wrong. I got a FP for FEA, was thinking of doing Test Track at rope drop and trying to get into Soarin later considering their 3rd lane. I guess only time will tell.

I am enjoying and learning a lot from your reports. :)

Based on wait times I saw while I was there, that sounds like a good plan. I would've done the same, but DD wanted to rope drop Soarin' instead. But wait times in order of longest to shortest were FEA, TT, and Soarin' consistently. Soarin' still got over an hour, though. :-/

TT FP does have a design component. Was very happy to discover that. I suspect single rider does not.

Sounds like you had another great day.

This day was our fourth and last park day, so ending the trip in the Magic Kingdom felt right. We took the monorail to the ferry and arrived at MK during the Festival of Fantasy.

We caught the parade from the patio outside of the Tinkerbell/Mickey meet-and-greet. Honestly, I was just looking for some shade and a slightly elevated place from which to catch a few floats. We saw Flynn Rider, Ariel, and Merida, plus the dragon with its fiery breath.

After that, we scooted inside to meet Tink. DD gasped when she entered the meet and greet room and spotted the oversized spoon. Her interactions with Tinkerbell were very sweet.

After this, we made our way up Main Street, USA, with no plan.

I checked wait times on the app, and we finally got around to one of our favorites:

The Carousel. I thought the shadows were lovely in the late afternoon.

In Fantasyland, we also snagged a Fastpass for It's a Small World.

So we were about to wind up our last afternoon at the Magic Kingdom, hearts growing heavy with sadness. So we saw this again:

IMG_3225.jpg

Based on my pictures, we hit Pirates one more time before leaving. I must've grabbed a FP+ on the fly.

We also walked through the Emporium, picking up some of these:

I think at that point we must've returned to the hotel. Surely we swam, shopped, and sighed about not having any more park days left. But the great news was this:

We had Typhoon Lagoon the next day! And my sister was coming over to watch DD so DH and I could go out for dinner! And we had a neat little pamphlet in our room about calling the front desk to extend our stay! Let's just ruminate on that, shall we?

Typhoon Lagoon: We didn't bring phones or cameras this day. And it was awesome. I hadn't been to a Disney water park before, but DH had been many years prior. We arrived right around 9am, and we were able to snag a couple chairs in the shade in front of Happy Landings Ice Cream. It was a terrific location. Central, for the most part, with a short walk across a bridge (over Castaway Creek) to restrooms and Leaning Palms quick service. It was also near Ketchakiddee Creek, the Surf Pool, and the Bay Slides.

TL was a massive hit with all three of us -- and truly a surprise hit. The Surf Pool is so well designed. Not only is the wave exciting and stunning to look at, the shallow areas at the start of the pool funnel the water into nifty swirls and pools perfect for a less wave-enthusiastic person. The Bay Slides were really fun for DD, and I could hang out in the currents of the Surf Pool while she went for slide after slide.

We were also all keen on Castaway Creek, but first DH and DD took a slide on Keelhaul Falls. I wasn't sure how aggressive it was, so I opted out. DD went first down the hill, and I saw her huge smile as she landed at the bottom. Special moment. We all rode Gangplank Falls, for which the only complaint I have is how heavy that raft is to roll up the queue.

We settled into Castaway Creek for three or four rounds, getting the feel for all of the tube options and genuinely relaxing. I am not a person who is good at relaxing, but the Creek was... amazing. We all loved it. When we finally crawled out, all three of us went on Keelhaul Falls. It wasn't too aggressive, but the amount of spinning my tube did was off-putting (particularly as a 29-weeks-pregnant woman).

We grabbed lunch at this point. We used up all of our QS credits on this day because DH and I were going out for dinner and knew we wouldn't need them later. DD got the adult chicken nuggets with a frozen strawberry lemonade and an apple juice. DH ordered a turkey panini (I think) with key lime pie and a blueberry lemonade. I ordered a topical burger with pulled pork and pineapple on it, chocolate cake, and a side of tortilla chips. It was a lot of food for the lot of us, and I think we ended up bringing some chicken nuggets back to the hotel with us.

After lunch, DH and I wanted to do Shark Reef. DD was not interested in swimming with sharks and stingrays, and I was not going to force her to do it. But we did all go through the queue, pick up our snorkels and masks, and listen to the instructions. The lifeguard who ushered us toward the reef noticed DD was nervous and took time to explain that the sharks don't have teeth and the stingrays don't have stingers. He was very sweet about it, and DD moved a little closer to the reef. At the water's edge, DH got in with the rest of the swimmers, and DD and I kept discussing it. A second lifeguard took time to explain how she and I could swim together (not on my back but holding onto one arm). Eventually, DD chose to get in. We began our swim across, with her basically drowning me. I couldn't even follow the directions not to kick my feet because I was legitimately trying to stay afloat. A third lifeguard came over about half-way across and let DD use his red float. Then he took the time to swim us over to some blue tangs so DD could find Dory. Then the whole swim was over.

I honestly saw almost nothing but the fog in my goggles. But DD was proud to have overcome her fear, and I'm happy we all did it because when we returned home, I heard the Reef will be closed. But DD was really ready to get back in Castaway Creek, and DH wanted to hit some big slides, so we went separate ways. DD and I floated over to Ketchakiddee Creek, then spent a good 45 minutes shooting water canons and letting her slide down the kids' tube ride. I loved Ketchakiddee Creek. So well done. Tons for kids to do. Lots of spots for parents to relax (or join in). It was DD's favorite part of Typhoon Lagoon.

When DH finally found us (read: we found him because he didn't remember where to look for us), we enjoyed the Surf Pool for a while before fulfilling DD's biggest food wish: the Sand Pail. This ice cream treat was pricey, but how often do you get to eat an ice cream sundae out of a sand pail with shovel instead of a spoon? Basically never. So we all plowed through most of it (we left about 1/4 of it), took another dip in the Surf Pool, then had to head out to prepare for our evening.

We jumped on a bus to... Disney Springs. Where we waited at the bus stop for our ride to Movies. We arrived at Movies around 515, with my sister and the kids arriving at 530 and DH and I needing to refresh before our date night. It was a tight timeline, but we made it. DSister and DNieces hung around with DD (my sister packed a picnic for them and made a scavenger hunt for things around the resort), and DH and I jumped in our car and drove to Boma at Jambo House at Animal Kingdom Lodge. My goal for the evening was to surprise him with a (late) anniversary dinner at one of my favorite hotels in an effort to woo him to the Disney side. And we had good food in the process.

IMG_3234.jpg

DH loved the restaurant and the resort, and we had a much-needed night out. (Where we live in NC, we have no family, so we get out maybe 1-2 times per year...) We spent some time wandering the resort after our meal.

IMG_3235.jpg

IMG_3237.jpg

The food at Boma was terrific. Meats were well-cooked with their delicious accompanying sauces. The sides were plentiful and offered a diverse flavor selection. And desserts were tasty (not that we had much room for them). DH had a beer from Kenya that he enjoyed, and I had some ginger ale and POG/jungle juice.

While we dined, we discussed the option of adding another night and another park day to our vacation. We agreed that I would price it out when we returned to the hotel.

The girls had a terrific night, and I finally got DD down to sleep around 930. I called the 'back office' number listed on the pamphlet to find out that the hotel room could be had for $120+taxes, with another park ticket coming in around $130 for all three of us. DH and I decided to do it. So around ten that night, I locked in the extra room reservation. Around seven the next morning, I trudged back to the lobby to extend our four-day ticket to a five-day ticket (and was told we bumped up to a second water park day as well). We had an extra Disney day! DD and I were freaking out! Let's get on the bus!

It was our bonus Disney Day! Off to the Magic Kingdom we go! Honestly, DD was dragging this morning. I think Typhoon Lagoon the previous day wore her out beyond levels that could be recovered. So this morning was partly about doing things we missed and keeping her as not-grumpy as possible.

Who can be grumpy when they see this?

We were cruisin'! Out of our first ride by 915. ;)

I honestly don't know what order we did things this morning. It was a lot of bouncing around. So here are some jumbled pictures from July 29.

IMG_3249.jpg

Is the room actually stretching? No? DD decided she loves Haunted Mansion. Yea!

IMG_3251.jpg

The last two days we were at MK, Carousel of Progress was closed. DD was bummed because she wanted to ride "the dream come true ride". It's possible she's heard the song several (hundred) times. So happy it was open this morning!

IMG_3252.jpg

We didn't ride AstroOrbiter, although DD would probably like it.

DSCF4041.JPG

People Mover is a big hit for us. DD says it is a relaxing ride. Plus it's fun to see things from a new perspective from time to time.

DSCF4040.JPG

Perennial favorite Dumbo. We rode a total of three times during this trip.

IMG_3260.jpg

DH and DD rode Barnstormer just once this day.

We managed to squeeze in another first: meeting characters at Storybook Circus. In the past, DD was too scared to meet non-face characters, but she decided she wanted to give it a try this time. She was fascinated by their costumes and couldn't stop touching them. I'm not sure how the characters feel about that.

DSCF4047.jpg

IMG_3291.JPG

Minnie and Daisy were standard fare, DD was scared of Goofy (too tall), and Donald was terrific. He borrowed the bubble wand you can see DD holding in the Daisy picture above and proceeded to hypnotize the cobras that flank his meet and greet area. He made a big production of it, and DD thought it was hilarious.

IMG_3258.jpg

Could this place smell any better?

When we left here, we decided to visit Ariel with the fins since the bubble wand was Little Mermaid themed. (By the way, this bubble wand is really fun. Crazy amounts of bubbles! It's sitting out in our living room as I type because it's so fun.)

IMG_3261.jpg

IMG_3266.jpg

As you can see, Ariel was appropriately impressed. The two of them played with that bubble wand for several minutes. It was a terrific meet and greet.

At this point, we were hungry. Good news! We still had one adult QS credit left! I dragged my people over to Peco's Bills for some variety. DH and I ordered chicken fajitas with a side of chips and a frozen strawberry lemonade. DD ordered kids mac and cheese (paid out of pocket) with grapes and carrots. Some confusion ensued at the pick-up counter, and they ended up sending me to the table with an extra kids meal. (I tried to refuse it; they insisted I take it.)

We made great use of that yummy toppings bar and the station where they were passing out cups of ice water. We ended up being well hydrated and very full. It powered us through another couple of hours. We rode Pirates with a Fastpass, and I grabbed another Fastpass for Buzz. We grabbed another frozen lemonade (this one to eat with a spoon) and started to cross the hub for Buzz when the skies broke open. It was the first rain we experienced during the trip, so we really got lucky overall.

We rode Buzz, then threw a poncho onto DD (she was adamant that she needed one) and headed toward Main Street. I think we were all tired and felt satisfied we had ridden everything we wanted to ride. It was going on three by this point, so we walked through the misting rain and spent some time in the Emporium.

We were sad but too tired to persist. We returned to the hotel, shopped in the store, relaxed in the room, had some dinner, and went to the pool. We ended up watching Zootopia in the outdoor seating area, where cast members were handing out full sized bags of kettle corn. DH took care of that. (Actually, DH and DD watched all of it. I went to the room and packed a bit and changed and got dry clothes for DD.)

It was a relaxing way to end vacation. But we had one more spontaneous day ahead of us...

The next morning, we were feeling the leaving Disney World blues. We packed up around 830 and made our way to I-4.

IMG_3302.jpg

But DD was crying in the back, saying she wished we could go back to Typhoon Lagoon. I was crying in the front wishing we could go back in time and relive the whole week again. DH was trying to find some way to pacify DD.

Then I remembered that with our fifth day park add-on, we also had another day at a water park. Believe it or not, about twenty minutes off property, I turned the car around, drove to Typhoon Lagoon, and pulled out the swim bag. We spent a couple hours floating, playing, and being pummeled by waves. It was a really good idea. By the time we were done there (around 11), we were in better spirits. We crossed the street to Disney Springs (hadn't visited yet), shopped at World of Disney, and had lunch.

DD had been asking to go to Rainforest Cafe, so we were happy to get a walk-in around noon. The food was decent, and DD loved the atmosphere.

After lunch we popped into the Lego store for five minutes, then actually started our drive home. We hit tons of traffic in Florida (accidents, unexplained bottlenecks, etc.), sped through Georgia, dragged through South Carolina, and finally hit North Carolina around 11 pm. Here's a picture of where we broke down on the drive to Florida:

IMG_3314.jpg

And here's some traffic jam outside of Jacksonville:

IMG_3315.jpg

My people slept a lot and otherwise were very relaxed. I was just impatient to get home. But you won't believe: We got the dreaded low tire pressure light around midnight outside of Fayetteville, NC. We pulled into a sketchy gas station and put air in the front tire. A helpful gas station employee loaned us his tire pressure gauge (I was poorly prepared for this situation, obviously), so we felt pretty confident that we could make it home. Sixty miles later we arrived home -- just after one a.m. It ended up being an 11.5 hour drive that should've been 9.5. Needless to say, I was happy to be home.

Thanks! I'm not typically very spontaneous, but TL was so relaxing, it ultimately was a great experience. We will definitely plan TL days on future trips.

Such a fun trip! I love the last minute return for the water park too :) So much fun! I have never heard of them offering something to extend your stay. That's a cool idea though! Especially for people who drove, so you aren't locked into flights or anything.

the wand that was given to the girls in the restaurant. Boys received a sword. I'll leave my feelings about this for another time and another forum. Ha
UGH. This would irritate me. I was not into traditionally feminine stuff growing up, so I was always disappointed when I didn't have a choice but to receive the "girl" option. Dumb. Glad your little girl got her a sword elsewhere though :D.

All three of us thought that some of the scenes were breathtaking, and the quality of the film seemed impeccable.
This is so good to hear! I was never a huge Soarin' fan either, so hopefully I'll feel the same way when I see the new version.

My guess is that we could have requested a sword instead (at CRT), but my daughter was happy to have a wand. She ended up coming home with several long handheld toys (sword, wand, scepter).

I hope you like Soarin' more. I think I just never got the hype before, but I thought the new version was lovely.
