Trip Report A Five-Year-Old's Dream Vacation

Hello, humans! My family just returned from a whirlwind, extended stay at Walt Disney World, where we tried lots of new things and extended our stay by a day and a half (because we just couldn't say goodbye!).

The family includes myself, a thirty-four-year-old Disney World lover; my husband, a forty-one-year-old Disney convert (I hope); and our five-year-old daughter, who is an emerging Disney World fanatic. This trip was the result of a promise made after our December 2014 trip. My husband told our daughter that we would return to celebrate her fifth birthday. Not one to forget anything, she started angling for her birthday trip about a year ahead of time, and I booked it in February.

By some stroke of magic, I managed to book right about the 180 day mark, which meant I was able to score a couple of coveted ADRs: Be Our Guest and Cinderella's Royal Table. More on these later. I also grabbed our room/ticket package when a modified free dining plan was offered. We received one quick service meal per person, per night. This ended up being a great decision for us, and a little research allowed us to stretch it out significantly.

But first, we had to get there. We live in the Raleigh area, so we drove. We have done many road trips in the past, including a long haul from Boston to Toronto when DD was nine months old, so this was a logical choice for us. But we have never had to do this:

IMG_2938.JPG

That's me, taking a creepy selfie whilst in the cab of a tow truck with my beautiful, beastly machine riding on the back. Oh, yes. We got a flat tire on the side of I-95 north of Daytona, Florida. My husband and I are both able to change a tire (although at seven months pregnant, I was willing to let him do most of the work), but we were missing the wheel lock key. To be honest, I didn't even know I had wheel locks on the tires, so I am absolving myself from the blame here. But what that meant logistically was the we had to be towed to a Honda dealership to have the tire replaced. Roadside Assistance found us a tow truck that could accommodate three people in the cab, but it was forty-five minutes away. The Honda dealership closed in under an hour. But humanity won out as the manager of Hendrick Honda in Daytona offered to keep members of his team past closing so that we wouldn't be stranded. And on that note, if you need any Honda help in Florida, Rich at Hendrick is your man.

We were back on the road about three hours after the initial flat, and we arrived, finally, at our destination around six p.m.

IMG_2931.jpg

We stayed at All-Star Movies. I had checked in online several days prior and made some room requests. I received the text with our room number (and a digital map of the resort) while waiting for the tow truck, so we shlepped all of our stuff directly to the room. Our bands worked perfectly, and we were in (and relieved) right away.

IMG_3303.jpg

We stayed in room 1747, which was on the backside of the first Dalmations building. The location was awesome. We were close to the lot where we parked our car for the week, and it was always quiet. Our view looked like this:

DSCF3428.JPG

The room/ticket/dining package mandated a preferred room, otherwise I wouldn't normally request one. But I was really happy with our location. The room itself was the typical value resort experience:

DSCF3427.jpg

Snowman blanket not typically included. :p Somehow (read: by force) my daughter has inherited my genes for organization, so she put her things in a drawer and aligned her stuffed animal friends before we headed out to see the resort and obtain some food.

Fun! I hope you'll get to relive some "real time" magic with my report. ;). Did you all enjoy Movies?

Well hello neighbor!!! Our family also just got back earlier this week. We also stayed at the Movies from July 24th-30th.. We were 2 stories above you in rooms 1948 and 1949. Your pictures are great, I even took the same Dumbo "believe and Soar" pic. It's the first time I noticed that sign and I really liked it. Our first day on Sunday was also at MK. Look forward to the rest of your report. Maybe I'll see our family in your pictures. :D

We did enjoy the Movies! We had connecting rooms since there was 6 of us on this trip. The beds were comfy, but the painting on the bathroom walls was pretty sloppy. I do plan on reliving my trip through your report! ;)

Cinderella's Royal Table was lovely, delicious, and fun. Here are some ambience pics.

IMG_3138.jpg

The section in which we were seated was adjacent to the bright, beautiful windows. Our server, Denise, told us it was the "best section" because the princesses visited that area first. Indeed, that was so.

In case you're wondering what the process is like: The table was set when we arrived, and servers immediately started coming around with orange juice and coffee. We asked for apple juice as well, and it arrived summarily. DH and I were given a menu (which I forgot to photograph), and Denise told us that the default meal for DD was the traditional breakfast (although I've seen other options on the menu online). DD and DH don't eat beef or pork, and Denise said the restaurant didn't have turkey or chicken sausage (I find this odd), but she promised she could bring out more of whatever DD liked (fruit, waffles, or eggs, basically). That was fine for us.

The (really yummy) plate of pastries came out right away also, and in rapid succession, it was time to place the adult order. DH ordered the vegetable quiche with goat cheese sauce. I am not a fan of goat cheese, so I did not enjoy my taste of this dish, but he loved it and found it to be filling. I ordered the beef tenderloin with potato frittata and chive oil. My, I enjoyed that. I rarely eat beef because it just doesn't make sense in a household where I'm the only one who eats it, but I've been craving beef off and on since, oh, March. This was really tasty.

I think the princesses came just about as a our food arrived (Snow White may have stopped by pre-meal-delivery).

The order of princesses was Snow White, Ariel, Aurora, and Jasmine. Ariel was probably the best as far as interaction, but all were friendly and efficient. In the last picture, you see the wand that was given to the girls in the restaurant. Boys received a sword. I'll leave my feelings about this for another time and another forum. Ha. But since DD already had a shiny new sword from Belle's shop, she was happy to receive a wand.

The kids all received a wishing star as well, and I think the "make a wish" announcement with accompanying flashing lights happened two or three times during our forty minute meal. DD loved that. I think she wished for a sun umbrella she'd spied over in Liberty Square. So. She's five.

My sister has never brought her kids to CRT (they are 4 and 6), but when she asked if it was worth it, I had to say yes. I wasn't sure how DD would do with the princesses, but her excitement was adorable and endless. And the quality of the meal was terrific.

After our exciting breakfast, it was time to jump on a few rides. My goal was to spend the morning in Adventureland, but first... we had to go order that sun umbrella DD wished for.

DSCF3834.JPG

DSCF3833.jpg

Near Sleep Hollow Refreshments is a small stand where two artists decorate colorful umbrellas with names and designs (flowers are default, castles/princesses/etc. are added fee). DD opted for red because she had just seen Elena of Avalor for the first time that morning. Five-year-old reasoning. We were told to return in thirty minutes for our custom sun umbrella. Fine. Let's do some rides now.

Our first Fastpass+ was for Pirates. I don't recall if we needed the FP; I doubt that we did. But we used it anyway and enjoyed our first Pirates ride of the trip. (We rode it a total of three times, and it has moved up into the top 3-4 MK rides for DD.) We followed that up with a Jungle Cruise. I let DD take the pics. Here are a couple.

DSCF3839.JPG

DSCF3842.JPG

We followed this up with a visit to the Tiki Room. DD and I enjoy the Tiki bird song on our Music of the Parks CD from several years ago, so she was missing Iago. I had to explain that Disney purists weren't fans, and Iago bit the dust. We still enjoyed this classic show.

DSCF3854.JPG

We also rode some magic carpets. I enjoyed the view from the top.

DSCF3847.JPG

We had to jaunt over to pick up our umbrella, and then we took in the Hall of Presidents.

DD gets a kick out of human animatronics, so this was fun.

Enjoying your report so far. Sounds like you had a great time.

Looking forward to the rest of your report. Taking my DD and DS in just over a month. And they are not aware we are going this year. Nice hearing the insights from your trip. It appears it was not very busy while you were there. Hoping for the same but can't plan for it.

I feel like crowd levels were low compared to what we've always been told to expect in summer. But afternoons/evenings were busy, and we accomplished the majority of our goals before lunch. Even my DH, who is not one to get up and go in the mornings, came to see that it was worth it to hit parks at opening. That actually allowed me to push FP to afternoons/evenings, which alleviated our waits there.

Hopefully you'll have a similar experience. Your kids are going to freak out!

We spent a week at Disney World in early July. I was prepared for high crowd levels in all of the parks. In actuality, the crowds were the lightest that I have ever experienced, and I've been visiting since the mid 1970s. I think that the new summer blackout dates for Florida passholders are a big factor. The only times we were shoulder to shoulder in a throng of people were in the MK hub/Main St area during parades and Wishes, and in HS during the Star Wars fireworks. I have to admit, it was a pleasant surprise no matter the reason.

After Hall of Presidents, we had an eventful ride on the Haunted Mansion. The doom buggies stopped for 10-15 minutes, and we ended up being evacuated. We were in the cemetery, so not too far from the end of the ride. But we grabbed our anytime/most rides Fastpass and decided to give Epcot a whirl.

Unfortunately, the Magic Kingdom monorails were down (this day and the next), so we climbed aboard the ferry. This wasn't so bad from our direction, but the ferries coming from the Transportation and Ticket Center were jam-packed with new MK arrivals.

DSCF3860.JPG

IMG_3154.jpg

We transferred to the Epcot monorail at TTC. FYI: The monorail cast members told us to fill our water bottles on the platform because "it's the coldest water in the World." They were right.

We ended up riding with monorail driver Richard, who did magic tricks and pointed out items of interest (i.e. the once-airport that comes up on the left side of the rail). He also asked us lots of trivia questions, which the kids in our car loved.

We arrived at Epcot with little delay. Quick bag check -- and we were in!

IMG_3155.jpg

DSCF3864.jpg

Since this was an unplanned Epcot visit (my Fastpasses were all scheduled for the following morning), I grabbed some on-the-fly Fastpasses so we could accomplish some of our touring goals early. This ended up being a great decision because DD loved several rides I hadn't really anticipated her loving, and we were able to do them multiple times.

We started off in The Seas with Nemo and Friends. We Fastpassed the line and were soon on our clam mobiles.

DSCF3866.JPG

We didn't spend much time here, but while we were there, we saw a short demo of a the SCUBA diving tube. The diver was in the tube, and the cast member who ran the demo showed us how to use hand signals to communicate. We also stopped long enough to find Dory and Nemo. Oh! And my DH was eaten by a shark. So all in all a great visit.

We scooted over to The Land, where we ate some lunch in Sunshine Seasons. DH and I split a salmon dish. It was served with simple rice, green beans, and tomato chutney. We subbed our drink for some potato wedges. DD ate mac & cheese with grapes and carrots. We all shared a double chocolate brownie. That was terrific. I was also happy to find packaged moist towelettes on the condiment/utensil counter, so I pocketed a few extras for another time. As a mother, I find that odd things make me happy. Haha!

After lunch, we rode Living with the Land. DD loved this. I think we rode it three times over the next couple days.

DSCF3870.JPG

DSCF3871.JPG

Here's a surprising development: During our lunch, I was able to score an on-the-fly Frozen Ever After Fastpass for 640 that night. I grabbed it, despite having a FP+ for the next morning. It ended up being a great treasure because the following day, the ride went down for hours -- just as we got to the front. More on that in a later post.

So we now knew we would be staying at Epcot for some time, and we needed to fill it. So after confirming with the app that the Soarin' wait time was crazy prohibitive, we wandered over to Journey into the Imagination. The wait time was fifteen minutes, but it didn't take us that long.

DSCF3876.jpg

DSCF3873.JPG

We enjoyed the ride as much as we could, and then we spent a bunch of time in ImageWorks. DD and DH created a few dragons and played music with their bodies. A DD loved the musical floor tile area. She's played on it before, but she was determined to figure out which tiles corresponded to the images on the wall above. This... took some time. I took a seat. I was having some stomach pain and wanted to monitor for a bit.

After chilling in the AC (hallelujah), we finally left and made our way to Spaceship Earth. I don't have any decent images of the ride itself. Sorry, friends. We did get stuck in the 1930s for about five minutes, though. Despite this, DD loved the ride (particularly the interactive component as you travel backward).

So we were done with rides that had short wait times in Future World, so I directed my people to World Showcase.

When I visited Epcot when I was a kid, we always started in Mexico, so that's my default. Besides, we had to be in Norway soon!

IMG_3185.jpg

DSCF3883.jpg

Once inside, DD became enamored with Duffy on a Stick. Really, if there are markers anywhere within a mile, she's all over them. So we let her take her time, and I had some quiet time browsing in the market. I picked up an avocado margarita for DH. I had read a lot of positive reviews of this, and he loved it too. He said it was perfect for the tropical day.

After about half and hour soaking in the atmosphere (and merchandise) the Mexico pavilion, it was time to queue up for Frozen Ever After.

DSCF3884.JPG

As you can see, the Standby Entrance was 150 minutes. Even Fastpass was out of the building. It probably took us about twenty-five minutes from entering the line to actually boarding a boat. In that time, DD made a new friend. The little girl in line in front of us was the same age, and she was dressed in full Elsa, head to toe. DD "loves" Frozen, but actually, she doesn't care about it that much. She will choose to watch Cars before she'll watch Frozen. But she got into the spirit with her new buddy, and the girls helped pass the time by amusing us with their (mostly contained) squeals.

DSCF3887.JPG

My pictures of the queue are sub-par. I won't bore you with them. I think I took a couple of better ones the next morning, so I'll include those in that part of the trip report. As far as spoiler alerts, I honestly just don't have too much to say about the ride. It was fine.

After our flume ride, we checked the wait time to meet the sisters themselves. It was only fifteen minutes (par for the course while we were in WDW), so we joined that queue. Now that's some eye candy.

When we walked through the door to the room where the sisters meet, Elsa was coming to greet us as the door. DD yelled "Elsa!" and gave her a huge hug.

Too fast for me and my camera, but I love the memory regardless of the blurry picture.

DSCF3902.jpg

I don't remember what they all talked about, but it was a fun meet and greet. The sisters gave DD their full attention, and DD was all smiles.

After our successful meet and greet, DD proceeded to have a meltdown over not getting a $30 pair of shoes and a $20 scepter, so I dragged them toward the park entrance so we could leave. I deduced that she was hangry more than anything, so I stopped for $4 popcorn. Worth every penny. But we still headed out, getting back to the resort around 745. DD had an arcade play card burning a hole in her pocket from the night before (I forgot to mention that earlier in the report -- this kid loves arcades and played for a while when we returned from Animal Kingdom the day before). I let her use it up for a while, then I sent DH and DD back to the room to get into pajamas and start to unwind. I went to grab food. We had some pasta and sauce for the little one (with a Dannon smoothie in a bottle and some grapes), and DH and I had a turkey/gorgonzola on a croissant with house made salt and vinegar chips, a side of veggies with hummus, and an ice cream cookie sandwich. SO good. And something about eating dinner in bed felt so indulgent. Great end to a fantastic day.

Sounds like you had a great day. with the extra bonus of getting a Frozen Ever After FP. That was a catch. There just appears to be so much to do at Epcot that I don't think we will be able to see everything. At the current time it would appear the Land of the Living and the remaining attractions within the same building will be the causalities of only doing one day at Epcot.

I was really concerned about not having enough Epcot time, so it ended up being perfect that she wanted to go this particular afternoon. But I was still worried we couldn't do Frozen, TT, and Soarin'. I'll explain more in the next post, but we 'lucked' into another downed ride that resulted in a FP for any ride, which we used on TT. We rope dropped Soarin', and we ended up getting in all of our must dos.

We skipped a lot of World Showcase though. :(

I am really enjoying your trip report! We are planning on taking our DD to CRT on our next trip. She will be almost 3, and I'm hoping it will be a good age for her. She Loves princesses!

That picture of your DD and Elsa looking our the window is perfection! I'd frame it, even if it's blurry!

The next morning we boarded a bus to Epcot to complete what we started the night before. I was hoping to make it all the way around World Showcase, plus DD was hoping to ride both Soarin' and Test Track. I figured it was improbable that we would ride both without at least one being a massively long line.

Good thing we fueled up at the hotel first. ;)

IMG_3173.jpg

DD loved Mickey waffles (as she should).

When we arrived at Epcot, guests were already through the turnstiles (can we still say this? Through the band scanners?), so it didn't take long for us to approach this beauty:

DSCF3924.JPG

My plan was to rope-drop Soarin' and to accept our fate to wait for Test Track later. So we made our way here:

DSCF3925.JPG

My Disney Experience told me that Soarin' was at twenty-five minutes. From entering the line to be shuffled to Concourse C, it took about fifteen. I count that as a victory.

DSCF3930.jpg

DSCF3931.JPG

When we arrived at Concourse C, for some unknown reason, Concourses A and B were loaded and run through without boarding us. That was annoying. Thankfully we boarded the next hang glider and started off on a tour of the world. I was never a Soarin' of California fan; it was fine but didn't knock my socks off. Maybe it was the global element or maybe I am just more easily impressed in my older age (don't think that's it), but I loved Soarin' Around the World. All three of us thought that some of the scenes were breathtaking, and the quality of the film seemed impeccable. Definitely will remain a must do for us in the future.

After Soarin', we took another float on Living with the Land (DD requested it -- be still my heart). We also traipsed over to Spaceship Earth because I had bumped our Fastpass to 10:20 (allowing for our 11:30 Frozen Ever After FP+). DD and I rode together, this time in the city seeking leisure. DH took a few minutes after the ride to send via email our postcards. They are fun to look at.

We began our journey around the World Showcase after Spaceship Earth. We started, again, in Mexico. DD colored another Duffy while I snuck in to buy her a silver cuff bracelet. I have a couple of pieces from when I was a kid that I purchased in the pavilion, so I figured this might be a fun souvenir for her to have. Eventually all three of us entered the market, where we found no line for the Three Caballeros.

True to form, we love a boat ride. This one was fun and colorful.

We still had some time to burn before our Frozen Ever After FP+, so we visited the Frozen sisters again. DD was wearing her Anna coronation dress (you know the one), and she was still talking about some Anna jewelry and a wand in the shop. Let's see how it goes.

The wait time was listed as fifteen. We didn't wait more than seven or eight minutes. Not even enough time to photograph the charming details of the Sommerhaus (however we spell that). I love the paint details and the amazing carpets. Can I get those, please? Just beautiful.

Pit stop before entering the Frozen Ever After FP line.

DSCF3967.jpg

Who run the world?

The FP+ line was inside the building this morning, which was a nice turn of events. Some blurry, terrible queue pictures:

DSCF3968.jpg

DSCF3969.jpg

DSCF3970.jpg

We moved swiftly through the line and eagerly awaited our second Frozen Ever After ride in two days. What fun! What joy! What... is going on? The ride went down as we, quite literally, were staring at an empty boat, about to board. See?

DSCF3972.jpg

Announcements were made. Promises (that it would be back up soon) were broken. We set an absolute not waiting past this time time (1215) and sat down. The vast majority of the queue emptied within ten minutes of the ride going down, and it was a little eerie to be in that dark, 'cozy' space without a noisy crowd.

Well, 1215 came, and we gave up our spot for whomever chose to wait in our place. We grabbed our any ride Fastpasses and exited into the blinding summer sun.

While waiting, I had tried to lock in a special, on-the-fly ADR (I had dropped a Via Napoli the night before because I wasn't sure we'd be at Epcot long enough to make the 2pm reservation). I didn't have any luck, but I definitely needed to eat. So we walked.

Twenty minute wait at about 1230 in July? Sure, we'll wait.

IMG_3210.jpg

IMG_3211.jpg

We ordered a large, simple pie to share and added eggplant to half of it. That eggplant was fine but not nearly worth the price. The pizza as a whole, I thought, was reasonably priced by Disney World standards, and it was really good pizza. Not too greasy with tomato sauce that still tasted, wonderfully, of tomatoes. DH got a red wine sangria. He enjoyed that.

While we dined, I offered the others an option. Frozen Ever After was still down, according to the app. We could use our anytime, any ride Fastpass and wait for it to come back up, or we could apply our Fastpass to Test Track. I explained that if we did that, there was no way I would be waiting in the FEA standby line. They both voted for Test Track (not particularly surprising), so we left Via Napoli full and happy and picked our way back to Future World.

To Test Track we went, Fastpasses in hand! It was a cosmic intervention, I swear, that allowed us to ride without succumbing to the sixty+ minute wait. Since I hadn't been on TT for years (since well before the refurb), I chose to go through the queue with DH and DD, but I didn't ride. Sadface.

They loved it! It was fun to build the car (we let the five-year-old take over), and they enjoyed the ride itself. Evidently DD's car was first in everything except efficiency (darn gas engine). We also enjoyed the post-ride activities.

DSCF3998.JPG

DSCF4003.JPG

After this, we headed out to Magic Kingdom (via monorail and ferry). I was bummed to miss so much in World Showcase, but it'll all still be there when we return... in 3-5 years. ;)
