A Closer Look at the Castle

The ToT image (mine :D ) above was produced with a combination of 6 projectors positioned on the roofs of Animagique and the Studio offices at WDSP. Believe me, it was the most stunning, bright and sharp, full motion system I`ve ever seen. I understand it is a combination of still slide and video.

Of course, the full video of the ceremony is at MouseBits.com for free, as always.

Is that what they are adding to the castle?

I hope so!

If it is what I think it is, it can look simply amazing. Here in Philadelphia, they've been doing something along these lines for a few years. About a year or two ago they used this sort of technology to illuminate City Hall at Christmas time. :xmas:

While in retrospect, it sort of looked like the castle back when it was decked out like a birthday cake,, at the time it was festive and VERY vibrant. I can't remember if the colors were static or changing. Lately, they've been illuminating other building and they are now more definitely animated. Check it out. I didn't shoot the video, so don't praise or bash me.

The video was shot rather tight and dosen't capture the whole picture and range of the show, but you get the picture.

^ That reminds me of the projection technology TDL used to use for Starlight Fantasy on the castle. Not video, but close. Think animated slides synched with lighting.. That in itself was a progression from the projections used in 1988s IllumiNations on Germany, Japan and Canada.

Ah.Interesting...So I guess the tech is readily available, huh?

Here's a better video than the one that I posted above. If this isn't what they're doing, it should be. It could be beatiful on the castle with fireworks in the background and great music.

The first video did show some image projections towards the end.

As somebody stated, I think that the LED lighting attached to the castle and the images/video projected onto the castle from projectors located across from the castle are two different effects. I couldn't picture the difference before, but I think that I have a grasp of it now and I'm looking forward to seeing what Disney does with it.

This looks like the are using UV light, they could have enhanced the with UV paint (that is almost transparent but glows with UV light) very similar to what they use in Astro Blasters.

Now the video seem a LCD light system. We use the same kind in my job. The can be program and is what they now use in Honey I Shrunk the Audience.

Now this is a video of Remember Dreams come True from Disneyland, the projections are over Small World...

Ok, PICTURES!

Here is the OLD lighting system, taken about a week ago.

Here is the NEW lighting system, taken last night. VERY Noticeable. The colors are SO vibrant, especially the magenta colour projected on the top turrets.

These photos were taken with the exact same setting on my camera. The difference is very obvious. In addition, I can see Cinderella Castle from my WL wood's view room and the difference in the lights is very noticeable from when i checked in 7 days ago, to the last few days

^I like the vibrance of the new better, but I like the color scheme of the old better.

Do the new lights change color, or are they static?

That's way too extreme, it makes the castle look like two different structures, not to mention blowing out the architecture itself. It also harkens back to the pepto-bismal 25th disaster.

I agree with MousDad that the old color scheme is much better but I am very happy with the upgrade of technology. I'm sure WDI will strike a balance with them over time.

For clarification:

YES the colours still change. When I was there it went from Orange, to Pink, to Purple, to Blue, to deep Blue and to teal. They still have all the old colours. I just only snapped 1 or 2 pics.

The new lighting looks great but I agree that in that particular picture there is too much of a difference in the top and bottom, almost looks like just white lights at the bottom.

Also thanks for FINALLY giving some pictures!

I agree, its way too bright and there's no contrast. You can't just light the top and have nothing on the bottom.

However, I am also happy over the upgrade of technology which could go over well if they only picked a proper lighting/color scheme.

Hey, lets relax everyone. According to Tinkerbelle, the colors still change and I'm sure that as time goes on, they'll tinker and toy with them so that the lighting is set properly. Now, are the colors in Tink's picture the best combo? No, but these new LED's are a great improvemnet over the old lights, and long over-do. Ever since I saw Disneyland's castle and how its LED lights are used during "Remember...", Cinderella Castle's lighting looked cheap and outdated. VERY glad they've upgraded. :)

Now, what was that about moving over to Epcot...

We've just begun to dream!

And yeah, this is just the first pics we have seen...WDI is prolly still had it in Test and Adjust.

For those that missed it and are wondering about the projection on the castle, here is the one I took on the 3rd of July following the fireworks...without the LEDs, still using the architectural wash lights. I would really like to see it with the LEDs the tech has come so far in just a few years. Just take a look at China during the Olympics.
