60 Year Old First Timer

Not sure I should admit this, but I've never been to Disney World. Of course I've dreamt of going to the land of Mickey since I was a wee lad, but it took till my 60th year to get the chance to go.

The real problem...I know where the Mouse resides, but not how to get there.

Want to go in December (first week.) Am I too late? Any suggestions? Do I wait for a Disney Visa Special or just book and enjoy?

Now that I think of it...its pretty embarrassing to be 60 and have no idea how to properly travel to a place where I'm hoping to finally live out a childhood dream (and act like a kid too boot!)

First a magical welcome to you! You are absolutely not too old to be taking your first trip!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It will probably add some bounce to your step. I would book now and if they announce a discount you can take advantage of it then. Please book your trip for as long as possible and get the Unofficiall Guide to Disney it wil really help you plan your trip.

60 year old couple here also coming first week of Dec. Just not our first visit. We live 3 hours away so we go a lot! That week always low crowds. The weather is great too. The discounts are not out for Dec yet, but I would book now and add any discounts that come out later. The usually come out late Aug. or Sept. Dinning reservations for that week start in June so you have plenty of time. Their are lots of older people that go with no kids. You will have a great time!

While you can certainly do it on your own, it sounds like you are looking for a little guidance. You might want to consider using Kingdom Konsultants, a Disney travel agency that does not charge you any extra for their services. Many on this board - including myself, a self-professed control freak - have used their services. You are NEVER too old for the Disney magic! Enjoy!

Nope! Never too late! I think you sure search the forums for any questions you have and if not you can always open a thread and ask away! None of the specials for Dec are out yet so I would hop over to the disney website and explore. Decided if you want to stay on or off. Which hotels fits your budget and would be a place you like to relax every night. You will also need to prepare a list of restaurants you would like you eat at, so you can have your reservations good to go!

If your anything like us Disney-lovers, planning is one of the best parts!

Welcome and enjoy your birthday!

Trust me when I say. I first thought my DW was mad when she suggested, whilst sitting at a table by the Aegean Sea having red snapper and a chilled glass of white wine watching the sun kiss the sea, that next year we should try WDW in Florida. Shock! Horror! We're my first thoughts..Are you crazy honey? I'll be 54 years young and you want me to visit Mickey Mouse..Well last year I turned 60 and was my fifth visit to this magical place..I only wish I could turn back time..They are plenty of things in life that you are too old for..Thankfully this isn't one of them..;)

I will absolutely second this suggestion. We have been to WDW a few times, are good planners, but used Kingdom Konsultants for our last trip, and we were blown away by their wonderful service. We're going to Disneyland in January and will be using them for that trip also. They are truly great, and beat any "face to face" travel agency we have ever worked with. Happy trip!

Youre as young as you feel. Disney is meant to be enjoyed at any age. Do your research, choose the things you want to do, risk doing some things you never thought you would do, have a blast. Make up for the years you were unable to go. Be a kid again and dont let the fact that you are 60 stop you from anything. You dont stop having fun until you stop moving.;)

Hello Shamus!
As all have said, "WELCOME"!
Our first trip was November1971, and have been MANY times since!
Never too old - I'll be celebrating my 72 birthday during our trip in October!
ENJOY!!!

Hello All: Well I booked!! Going in December as planned (60 years of planning...) Only worry is advice that suggested that I shouldn't have booked a Disney Package (room, tickets, and dining) since discounts that may arrive later may not apply to the package. Am I daft for booking as I have? Still...part of me says...who cares...I am finally going to Disney World!

Congrats on booking your first WDW vacation!!! I am a HUGE disney fan (obviously if I'm on these boards) and my bf had never been to WDW before (he just turned 61 last year...thank god he can't read these or he'd kill me for sharing his age online!!!) Anyway, you will have a great time and you picked a perfect time to go, theres no place in the world like Disney at Christmas! Just remember to pace yourself, there's a lot to see and you won't be able to see it all on your first trip, so I would make a list of your "must do's", you can always plan another trip to see what you missed. This November will be my 14th visit and I am still seeing and doing things I've never done before, that's one of the reasons I love Disney so much, even though I know each park like the back of my hand, there are still new things to see and do each time so it never gets boring or old. If you haven't done so yet, I would look at restaurants and try to get some ideas of where you would like to go and make sure you make your meal reservations for sit down restaurants at the 180 day mark, some restaurants book quickly, so I would also suggest having a few back ups. If you have any specific questions, just ask, we all love talking about anything and everything Disney, and there are plenty of places on these boards to help you plan a great first trip. :D

Shamus,
Your attitude has you on track to have a great time. I’m 60+ and have been visiting WDW for
over 30 years. There’s lots and lots to see. My advise is take your time and enjoy the experience in front of you. If you try to see everything, you run the risk of focusing on getting from point A to B more than the activity. You’re young at heart …… plan a second trip to enjoy what you missed the first time.

This warms my heart. My parents still go to WDW for romance...they wont even tell us they are going. But when they come back they tell us about what a nice time they had at Food & Wine/ Flower & Garden/ or just Monorail Hoppin till they find a place to eat.

That is the best part of going to Disney- there is no age limit.

I say get a button with "1st Visit", get an Autograph book, enjoy a Mickey Mouse bar, and enjoy a cocktail (or few) at Epcot. Take your time and we are all here for suggestions for you.
