6 weeks to go and my daughter broke her arm!

Last night my 7 yr old fell and broke her arm, a fracture that may require pins, we will know more tomorrow. Last night we were told 4-8 weeks, freaking out as this is a surprise trip and none of the kids know of it, any worries if we go with a 7yr old in a cast?

I don't think so, especially since it's her arm. If it were her leg I'd say you'd be in a different boat. The only thing that may be a problem really is that she won't be able to get it wet so if you had any waterpark or pool plans you won't be able to do those.

Go For It.

No way would I cancel,so sorry to hear of your daughters arm, but simple planning of where to go and what to do won't spoil the magic. Here's an idea, take a indelible marker and get character autographs on the cast,a Souvineer to remember.

i wouldn't worry about, she can still get in the pool (maybe more the baby pool) just protect the cast with garbage bags or the like. Prepare some sort of "zip lock bag" in adavnce and put it in your back pack . So when the time comes to do splash mountain or Kali River , you can throw over the cast.

That comes to my mind every year, we go in spring break but up till the point of leaving, my daughter is in downhill ski training. The weekend before we leave, i try not to think about it so not to jinx myself:)

I think you would be fine too. My son broke his wrist snowboarding and had a cast up to his elbow. He got something at the pharmacy that you put over the cast and had a drawstring to close it tight. He used it for showers and any other time he thought he might get it wet. You could use something like that for wet rides or even swimming. He also continued snowboarding a week after the break with his doctor's blessing because he said the cast material for so hard he couldn't do any damage even if he hit it off something. I would be more worried about it getting hot and itchy more than anything else. The heat will be bad in Florida and will make the cast even more unbearable but with some planning you should be fine.

Does anyone know if there are any rides where the CM might not let someone on with a cast?

Check with the surgeon before the cast is applied. In some circumstances, a "water-proof" cast can be applied - but not all. Most insurance plans do not pay for the extra cost of the special liner, so ask how much it will cost beforehand, and be prepared to pay out of pocket.

Also, check at a medical supply store, or online, for pediatric waterproof cast covers - they are more durable, are shaped to fit the arm better, and have a better seal than using plastic bags.

Your Orthopaedic surgeon and staff have probably dealt with hundreds of kids needing casts during the summer months, so will have a list of dos and don'ts, and hints for making your child more comfortable.

My sister got a waterproof sleeve at the local drugstore. I would get one even for going on Splash Mountain. Personally I would avoid the waterparks with a cast - seems like it would just show her too many things that she may not be able to do.

Look at it this way...the CM's and Characters will probably all make a big fuss over her. Get a couple of markers (different colours) and have them sign her cast and ask the dr. to cut it off with care and you'll have a unique souvenir.

Take some photos of them signing her cast as well, it will be a special character photo that none of her friends have (watch next year EVERY kid will want a broken arm at Disney)

If the cast is between 4-8 weeks and you're going in 6 weeks, she may not evne be in it. By that point she shouldn't have much if any discomfort. She should be able to ride just about everything. It might have been better if it was a leg. You could have gotten a wheelchair and cut the line and many rides. :D J/K. I hope she heels fast so it's not an issue.

My son broke his ankle right before a Disney trip - we went anyway.. avoided the waterparks but other than that it wasn't really an issue except for the walking - he had a 'walking boot' sort of cast.. so not crutches or wheelchairs.. but you can still go and have a great time.. :)

Totally agree, if you want to be a 'glass half full' kinda person, at least it wasn't a leg. An arm in cast shouldnt cause a problem with the rides.

Hope she is ok, I can imagine it must be painful, poor thing. :(

Hi, first time we went to disney with our friends my daughter broke here arm at gymnastics. She did everything without much restriction even swam in the hotel pools, the water parks are a little concerned about the rides though. You can get an inflatable bag that goes over the cast (use it for showers) but works really well for a brief swim.

Make sure you get a good supply of marker pens, the characters will make a huge fuss of her and sign her cast and wierdly will make her the star!

Sorry that happened...especially so close to your trip date.
Stay positive though...my middle child broke his arm in 2 places & he healed in 5 weeks!...My broken arm healed in 5 weeks as an adult.
Also, check with the doctor...some casts today are even waterproof!
