Why – Well because we wanted to of course. :D But why Thanksgiving week, one of the most crowded weeks there is? Well there were several reasons. For one, it’s tough to find a time to go these days that works for all 4 of us. I can go anytime, of course, and I do! :) But the teenagers and hard working hubby are harder. We had rooms booked for President’s Day weekend, but the kids had a lot of conflicts. Also, we had nothing to do for Thanksgiving. About 12 days before we left, I got an airfare alert for $176 flights to Orlando.

So what do you do when you don’t have anything to do for Thanksgiving and you can fly to Orlando cheaply? You go visit the mouse of course!! We go enough that the crowds don’t bother us much, so it seemed like the perfect solution.

The kids were more than game, and Stephen cleared it with his work. We bought the tickets and set to work trying to find somewhere we could use our DVC points and use about the same amount of points as we had planned to use in February. As expected, we didn’t have a lot of options, but that was no biggie either. Just happy to be going!

We ended up with the first night at Kidani in a savannah view studio. The next two nights were, get this, in a grand villa (yes for four of us :p ) at Old Key West, then two nights in a studio at Saratoga Springs. This would be an adventure!

Of course that was just the beginning. About 9 days before we left Ally was at basketball tryouts and rolled her ankle. Her ankle was huge when I picked her up, but she’d done something similar at volleyball tryouts and it was just sprained then. I assumed that was the case here, but we went to the doc just in case. When he told us there was a fracture, I was shocked! My first thoughts were sadness that she probably wouldn’t make varsity since she only went to one day of tryouts, and my second thought was how sad her volleyball coach was going to be when we told her that Ally wouldn’t be at the last volleyball tournament of the season in two days. It didn’t hit me until we were in the car going home that we were going to Disney in 9 days.

I screamed – “Oh no!! We’re going to Disney World!!” That may have been the first time I’ve used “Oh no” and “we’re going to Disney” in the same sentence. Ally immediately started clamoring for an electric scooter which seemed like a bad idea for too many reasons to list here. :)

She had a walking cast, but there was no way she was up for the amount of walking that Disney entails, so we were looking at our first trip to Disney with a GAC card and a wheel chair! This should be an experience.

Oh, and if you were wondering, Ally did make varsity. All five foot zero of her. And she’s a freshman! She’s out for a few weeks, but thankfully basketball season is long. Go Ally, go Ally…go go go Ally…:D

Saturday – November 17th – Departure Day

Flying on cheap flights means you may not get the best times. We couldn’t leave until 5:50 at night so we had the whole day to kill. We used it packing and relaxing so it didn’t work out too bad.
Around 2:00 we got notification that our flight was delayed 2 hours!! Ah man! We called to try to get on an earlier one, but no dice. They also told us they wanted us there on time in case they worked something out and we left on time. This was not sounding promising!

We had made all kind of plans for that night when we arrived, but all those plans were quickly disappearing in my head.

We got there a couple of hours before our flight’s scheduled departure time. Here we are on the shuttle:

I took so many phone pictures on this trip. I just got a new iphone and I was learning to use the phone camera. I used it all the time. I took pictures when I didn’t have out my camera, I took pictures for my instagram as well as Kingdom Konsultants instagram, toes pictures for my toesgoes blog, and pictures for Facebook updates! So so many things happening! I love my camera, but the instant gratification of a camera phone is amazing. I think I drove my family crazy being on my phone so much, although we all did it when we stopped in line or on a bus, but I was using it for photos! Very important!! :)

So most of these pictures are from my camera, but there’s several camera photos stuck in. I tried to remember to put white borders on so you can tell the difference. Well, hopefully you could tell anyway, but just in case! Although really the border isn't showing up well on this grey background, so we're back to hopefully you can tell the difference. :) I got much better on my camera phone by the end. Having two teenagers instructing me helped. Instagram is my new favorite app of all time.

Here’s a phone picture of our airport shuttle toes!

The security line was short but Ally had to go through extra screening because of her cast. An older lady pulled her aside and proceeded to take about 20 x-rays of her cast with another machine. It was a good thing we had a lot of time because it took FOREVER!! She did it from every possible angle, and then decide she couldn’t see it very well so she’d do it all over again. Mercy.

After we made it down to our gate area, we were on the hunt for food. Woo hoo! Five Guys!!

ThanksgivingDisney10016.jpg

Waiting for food:

ThanksgivingDisney10015.jpg

Didn’t you just take a picture?

ThanksgivingDisney10017.jpg

How long are we going to be here?

ThanksgivingDisney10018.jpg

Food always helps:

ThanksgivingDisney100113.jpg

While we ate, another delay came up. Then a gate change. Thank goodness on the second one because we were completely freezing by the first gate. The kids left for a while and found some plugs and some Annie Anne’s pretzels. We finally boarded hours later! Man it was going to be a late night.

Killing time:

ThanksgivingDisney100110.jpg

Then sleeping. Thank goodness for pillow pets:

ThanksgivingDisney100112.jpg

I took a picture of my awesome iphone case:

ThanksgivingDisney100111.jpg

You’re not really going to take a picture of us every five minutes are you? Well, yes, yes I am.

Chase snapped a quick shot of the Washington Monument for me as we flew over.

We’re here!! Mom, why are you awkwardly taking my picture?

It was so late!! Like midnight? Here’s what Ally did while we waited for the bags:

Here’s what I did. Played with my iphone camera of course:

Art of Animation! Not staying here!

ThanksgivingDisney100125.jpg

Animal Kingdom Lodge! This is us! There was literally not another soul outside:

ThanksgivingDisney100127.jpg

I ran all over the lobby taking pictures while Stephen checked in. I didn’t have my tripod, so these are so-so shots.

I walked up to the desk just as the cm was asking if an accessible room was okay. Stephen said yes, and I said, “Wait! Is there a bathtub?”

She said, “Yes, there is a bathtub!”

I was skeptical, but okay.

We made our way down to the room. It was about 1 am at this point and we were so tired. When we got to the room there was, of course, no bathtub.

Okay.

In fact the bathroom door was sliding and didn’t really close all the way. Very awkward.

Here’s the room:

ThanksgivingDisney100138.jpg

Then the balcony door wouldn’t open. Obviously none of these problems were huge, but they were extra frustrating at 1:00 in the morning when we really wanted to go to bed.

We called someone to come fix the door so we could enjoy the savannah view a little at least.
While we waited we decided we really wanted to move. I called and explained that we were told there was a bathtub (I take a bath every night and really really hate not having one), the bathroom door wouldn’t close and the balcony door wouldn’t open. We asked if we could move, but they told us there wasn’t a single other room in Jambo or Kidani. In fact there wasn’t anything at any of the resorts he checked first.

Okay. We decided to make the best of it and settled in. We decided to sleep in the next day and all fell asleep pretty quickly.

First full day tomorrow!

YAY!! Another Tammy adventure!! So bummed to read about Ally's foot! But awesome that she made varsity!!

Last November we arrive at our resort well after midnight and it was so dead! We were scheduled to land at 11pm but we didn't arrive until 12:30 after a delay in Portland and another one in DC... ugh.... flight delays are the worst especially when you're going to DISNEY!!!! :D

And I LOVE that phone case! Is it for the 4 or 5? I so wanted to get on in Sept when we were there but they didn't have the one I wanted anymore :( Should have bought it in May!!!

She did! She was excited! :)

Isn't it the worst? Flight delays when you're going to Disney are like flight delays with an exponential of 3. They are so much worse!!

It's for the 5. Disney didn't have any for the 5 yet, but I know they're coming. I got mine from Etsy. :)

I actually just went online and googled "disney world iphone cases" and the one I wanted that they didn't have in Sept was on there!! It's the special 40th edition one with all the parks on it. Just scoooped it up for $25.99! That totally made my day! I also saw some cases that looked like fastpasses. They were super cool. I want them all!! lol

Whoo hoo! TR! Hope you liked Kidani a little better than you experienced.. It's our home for DVC and we love it. Did have a leaky celing this past year but nothing troublesome... Old Key West is great too! Wanna see picks of the GV there!

Did you get a wheel chair for Ally to walk down the loooong hallways at Kidani?

I watched the DC United game that evening too and felt disappointed for you guys for about a second... But I can't say too much cause the Fire stink and I don't even follow them at all...

Oh yay!
It's hard to pick! I saw so many I liked! When I was looking for another one at Disney, Stephen was like, "What are you doing? You just bought a new case." He didn't go for my idea of multiple cases. :)

Thanks, Bill! We do like Kidani. We actually own there too!! I prefer Jambo a little, but we love AKL in general. Don't worry, I've got pics of OKW!

Getting a wheel chair from each resort was the one inconvenient part of changing resorts. We didn't get one at AKL because we would have had to take it back the next night. So we just got one at Epcot. :)

It was fun to have winning team this year! The last game was sad, but it made us (or me at least) feel better that we were at Disney!

I'm in!! totally awesome iphone case and AKL looks pretty WOW decorated for Christmas. Can't wait for more posts!

Thanks, Javy2004! Love AKL!

That was a pretty grueling travel experience. I hate flight delays; airports really aren't that much fun to hang out at.

I love your "so-so" shots of Kidani's lobby. o_O Most people couldn't do that well even with a tripod!

Eagerly anticipating the rest!! Especially photos of OKW GV--I only saw one once, on the tour back in 1998.

Great report so far! Being the picture taker myself I'm hardly ever in any pics, actually it's usually just DD. We must look like horrible parents, sending poor DD to WDW all by herself, lol.
I can't wait to read the rest when we get back from our trip.

Ahh! That's so nice, Siobhan! They really are dark though. But it's a beautiful setting!

OKW is coming and no airports are not that fun. Especially since it was freezing!!

We try to be better about getting family pictures, but we weren't thinking this time.

Your Dd will have some great vacation pictures, lol!

Thanks for reading!

I'm in! It will help my 9 days until I'm there go faster! I'm loving the Christmas decorations at AKL. We are planning on visiting the day we are at AK to see them first hand. Can't wait to read more.
