47 Square Miles

On the radio they said that Disney World was almost the size of Rhode Island...that is so sad.

It is also roughly the same size as the city of Sanfrancisco. Pretty Amazing. HUGE. You just cannot appreciate it unless you have been there. I always try to explain it, and until people see it for themselves, they just don't understand. :animwink:

In 1998 when we went to WDW, my aunt thought all 4 parks were bunched together, and there was one big parking lot. She didn't believe her eyes when she saw how huge WDW really was, and that it seemed just like another world. It is 47 square miles now, and trust me, it will increase in the future. Once I was watching a special on WDW on tv and a spokesperson said that Disney still has TONS of land to build on.

Yeah, um, that's a little exaggeration. I'll grant that Rhode Island is not a particularly large state, but it is certainly quite a bit more than 47 square miles.

The U.S. Census Bureau says that it is 1045 square miles.

When you think about it, how long does it take to drive from the entrance to WDW to the MK? Not that long. I realize that the entrance and MK are not as far apart as they could possible be and still be on property, but you get the idea.

from what i've heard, and this is justw hat i've heard, Disney has only used 24% of their land.

My friend and I were discussing Disney and he asked me which was bigger, DL or WDW. He didn't know what to think when I started laughing uncontrolably. But when i calmed down I explained to him just how huge a difference it is. We might go next year- I can't wait to see how surprised he is by the size of it.

BTW, does anyone know just how much bigger WDW is than DL? I wanted to give him a figure, but I don't know one- I can't even begin to guess- it must be a huge difference.

Disneyland is 74.2 acres. The Magic Kingdom in Florida alone is 106.3 acres.

Also keep in mind that Disney has said that they will NOT develop a certain percentage of their land, I think 25%.

Don't quote me on this but I think the 24% of land used may only be referring to the Parks and not the hotels.

I don't know how accurate this is, but, a few years ago a CM who was operatnig the tram said that you could fit all of Disneyland in the Magic Kingdoms parking lot and still park a hundred cars. Again, this is completely hearsay, but that is what I heard

I believe this comment was made before DCA was in place.

So I guess my anser is 'I don't know', but I heard from a guy, who heard from a guy, etc. :brick:

here are some rough stats on the parks and resorts worldwide (including undeveloped land)...

wdw: 30,500 acres
paris: 5,000 acres
dlr: 475 acres
tokyo: 450 acres
hong kong: 380 acres

these aren't exact, but are pretty close to accurate... isn't it surprising how small tokyo disneyland is?

That is certinaly true, you can drive across WDW in about 15 to 30 min depending what road you on and the speed limit, and a few years back I drove from Deadham , Mass to provedence, RI for a flight and it took like an hour or more to get there at 55 MPH

so I would say RI is very much larger Than WDW.

Wow, so that makes WDW about 65x bigger than DL! :hammer:
