We actually discussed this subject during a BTM tour. Gators on property are generally caught, tagged, and released somewhere way off property. A tagged gator that returns could be humanely disposed of. As previously stated, a gator that has lost it's fear of humans is a real danger, WDW doesn't want any headlines.
Whether tagged or not, I can tell you they aren't released "way off property." Back in the olden days (for me at least- probably circa 1990), I took a "Disney's Natural Inhabitants" (or something like that) tour. It was probably about a half day seminar that started out by showing you a map and orienting you to the Disney property both seen and unseen. Then, they loaded groups of people into passenger vans (maybe two or three vans on our tour) and took us to various "natural" behind the scenes areas on property.
As part of the tour, we travelled into an area that was comprised of a small canal system. There were more alligators in those canals than I had ever seen total in my life before. We exited the vans at one point so that we could take some good pictures.
The theme of the tour was that Disney is doing it's part in preserving the natural habitat of the many animals that inhabit central Florida. I just hope, with so much developement that they are still adhering to this practice.
