Limiting practices , training etc compared to back in the day - reality bites - we’ve gotten soft.

When was this day? Players have continued to get bigger, stronger, and faster. We’ve also learned a lot and as a result have modified the way practices are conducted. Safer doesn’t have to mean soft.

In the 1970/80s. Yes players have gotten bigger stronger etc with improved hydration, diet, creatine , workout facilities supplements, recovery areas etc D1 players eat round the clock and separate from other students in that their food options are like a five star dining 3-4 meals plus more a day. Not rocket science to figure out this was severely lacking back in the day. If we were lucky coaches allowed us to drink from a single water hose but the ice baths at the end of the long day was sweet to cool off and numb our bodies from the pain.

Still waiting on all that data to prove that they are softer and there are more injuries (or deaths since again, that is where your original nonsensical statement came from) than there used to be. Show me all that data on how people used to toughen up their brains by getting hit at full speed in practice.

Don’t have to. When you don’t do football hitting drills in practice summer sessions or in season your body will feel more and more the hits on game day. For many years teams did the infamous Oklahoma hitting drill a rites of passage throughout the pre season and season cheered on by a big circle of coaches and players.

So you really believe you train your brain to take less trauma? Even though every medical professional, scientist, and scientific study tells you otherwise, the Oklahoma coach from the 1970s knows the truth. Feel free to go read some stories from doctors at that time. There was an amazing book that escapes me now (I read it in high school) of a doctor was hired by the Raiders. He talks about the shock of walking into the locker room and seeing a candy dish of prescription drugs that players would just openly take handfuls of. But that is the time period we should strive for. A time when we didn't understand brain injuries and said "Suck it up and pump yourself with some drugs." This discussion is honestly kind of frightening at this point, and I'll reiterate, especially awful to be saying/insinuating a kid is dead because he didn't take enough shots to the brain (again, which I have proven as verifiably WRONG, despite you saying you don't need evidence to prove your case).

Perhaps you need to cease your feedback since it seems to be affecting you on how we played and practiced back in the day.

I guess all those players that wear those guardian caps over their helmets because they dont want to have brain damage later on in their 60s are soft too. It's easy for someone who never played a physical contact sport to call the guys that risk their bodies on a weekly basis soft because they won't take a helmet to helmet tackle willingly anymore.

My feedback is based on the knowledge we have TODAY. Something you have decided to ignore in your ridiculous argument. We know what brain injuries do to someone, how we get them, and that you can't "Toughen it up" by taking more hits. It's scientific fact. You have 0 argument other than to say back in the day, we just took hits and died more often. I suppose next you will tell me about how soft this generation is because they use that measels vaccine instead of sucking it up and dying.

Did you consider what coaches in the 1970s have to say on the subject?

What coaches and our captains made us go though it is what it is. Can’t help you if one is in a tizzy about it. I can tell you when we played our first game of the season we couldn’t wait to start playing smash mouth football against our opponents instead of our fellow teammates during summer sessions. When the Irish played Army recently the head coach of ND summed it up with three words when asked by media what is his game plan - “Play with violence”. The Irish walloped West Point that day.

Huh, almost like not having to take hits every practice (sometimes twice a day) didn't really impact their toughness while preventing them from unnescisary injuries. If only there was scientific data on such a thing....

FYI - Oklahoma drills still occur during the week not as often as before but it’s to get the guys feeling to hit or be hit.

No I was mocking the notion that players are soft for wanting to be safer, lol. My apologies if you took it as a reply towards you.

Correct, they have limited it because you don't need that type of practice as often as they used to think. Now there is a value put on studying the film and letting the body recover based on how far fitness science has advanced. SO, it is not that players are soft now, or that you can train the brain to not get hurt, it's that it's best for the players health as well as for the on the field product. You aren't magically immune to death or injury because you were taking more hits in practice (quite the opposite in fact). Now I'll go back to my extreme hatred of the 12 team playoff where random guys in a room pick based on what they think.

HA, my reply to you was mocking the idea that 1970s coaches somehow knew better how to prevent injuries to the brain that 2024 doctors and scientists. The top part was a reply to lilo.

You are creating a false narrative. I never said “ coaches somehow knew better “

12 team playoff equals entertainment drama , ratings and money earned by a number of people / organizations etc. capitalism and football go hand in hand. Vegas will be busy
