Oh boy. What a weekend! Even though Comic-Con took over everyone's minds, Jordan Peele's Nope still managed to open with a solid $44M. It is not the best opening and most likely could have done more if a few factors were different. However, $44M is nothing to complain about, as it is a great opening. Nope and Bullet Train will probably be the hot films for the rest of the summer movie season before The Woman King and Don't Worry Darling kick off the fall/awards movie season in mid-September. As for the holdovers, they were all quite strong. Where the Crawdads Sing fell an incredibly strong 40%, proving that the film has an audience and will most likely break even. The only massive fall was Thor 4, which stumbled a rough 53%. It is not shocking as most of its target audience was in San Diego waiting for more Marvel content or at home waiting for the people in San Diego to show what Marvel content is coming.

As for this coming Friday, DC League of Super-Pets hits theaters with a wide release. Everything Everywhere All at Once also returns to theaters, so now is your chance to see this incredible film on the big screen if you haven't already.

Thor 4 continues to outpace Ragnarok day-to-day and is now less than $40 million away from topping that film's domestic gross.

Minions: Rise of Gru is now outperforming Minions up to this same time-frame, after trailing the first movie for so long.

Top Gun will likely be the highest grossing movie of calendar year 2022. I don't see Black Panther or Avatar making more by December 31.

Marcel the Shell with Shoes On nearly quadrupled its theater count and I hope word of mouth spreads because it deserves to be a bigger hit.

Even though we are heading into a slow part of the 2022 slate, a few flashy films are making some cash. Sony's Bullet Train brought in a $30.1M opening total. It is not the most amazing opening, but it is not terrible. It is hard for an action film these days, as you really have to stand out in the crowd. However, horror films are doing just fine, as A24's Bodies Bodies Bodies had a stellar limited release opening. At just six locations, the film made $226.5K ($37.75K per-theater average). This comes in second place for best PTA this year, right under A24's other flick, Everything Everywhere All At Once. Lastly, there is Easter Sunday, disappointing both in box office numbers and critic response. The Universal film made a mere $5.2M, showing a sign that it will be on PVOD very soon.

As for the coming Friday, it is pretty bare. Bodies Bodies Bodies expands over 1,000+ theaters, and E.T. gets re-released in IMAX.

Not surprisingly, people really like cheap movie tickets:

"The one bit of good news is that total admissions were actually way up thanks to National Cinema Day on Saturday when over three thousand theaters across the country offered tickets for $3. The National Association of Theatre Owners is reporting 8.1 million admissions on Saturday, which is the highest of the entire year, compared to just 1 million on Friday, 4.2 million for all of last weekend, 7.8 million for last year’s Labor Day weekend (based on the Friday through Sunday three-day) and 8.2 million for 2019’s Fri-Sun Labor Day weekend (these numbers are according to EntTelligence). In those terms, Saturday was a movie-going bonanza (even if it was one of the worst Saturdays of the year in actual grosses)"
