Trip Report 2018-2019 A Year in the Land (Disneyland)...a multi-trip report

Hello and welcome to my trip report for my year as an annual passholder to Disneyland. Me (Amy) and my husband (Brad) have been passholders of both Disneyland and Walt Disney World but this year we decided to be exclusive to just the Land. It was a little painful to give up going to WDW this year, we consider it our home park but we also enjoy Disneyland too. I think I have a little more fondness to it than Brad, but anyway.... So why are we passholders for DL exclusively this year instead of WDW or both parks. Well financially it didn't necessarily make sense. Brad is a big Star Wars fan and I'm a big Disney nerd so with Galaxy's Edge opening in the Land earlier than WDW that was a draw. And the D23 Expo is in Anaheim again this year so it checked boxes for both of us.

So I'm going to begin this report a little in the past, 2018, that's right so long ago! :) We traveled to Disneyland over Thanksgiving 2018 and bought our annual passes so that is where we will start the trip report.

Upcoming trips:
A. late March 2019
B. possibly (most likely) a solo trip for me over Easter 2019 (Why solo?...well Brad is a pastor and the congregation kind of expects him to be there over Easter. I'm a teacher and have a nice little break over Easter and the hubs is too busy over Holy week and Easter so he won't really notice I'm gone.)
C. Late June 2019 to celebrate our anniversary and birthdays all in June and in the same week. This trip will include Los Angeles, Sequoia National Park, Death Valley National Park, Joshua Tree National Park & Palm Springs as well as Disneyland (and perhaps if rumors are true our first entrance into Galaxy's Edge)
D. our last trip late August for Disneyland and D23 Expo

By the way...if any of you are in Disneyland when our paths cross it would be cool to have any meet ups or say hi. I've met a few awesome WDWMagic members in Walt Disney World and it has been so cool. Don't be afraid to say hi if you see us walking around too!:)

So let's start the first leg of the trip report: November 20-25 2018

Tuesday November 20
Brad and I both had a full day at work. My day should have been full of students but since it is Deer Hunting week (or at least the big gun hunting week) in Wisconsin and Thanksgiving week, our district gives the kids the week off and teachers report for two days of inservice. So it wasn't a hectic day for me. However there was a little kerfuffle in the plan for today. It involved our beloved and spoiled minature schnauzer Kapono.
IMG_5529.JPG

My boss said that we could leave at 3pm instead of 3:30pm so hubby picked me up on the way to drop off Kapono at the kennel. Kapono has only spent 2 days ever in this kennel (good experience) usually she stays with my sister but she was unable to care for her this time. So it was the first time Kapono was going to be spending an extended time in a kennel. So we arrived at the kennel and no one is there, even though it is check-in time and the main building for the kennel is unlocked. So we go inside and wait thinking that maybe the owner is just busy at the house and will be out soon. After 5 minutes no one came even though dogs were barking in her house and in the kennel. So hubs gives her a call. And in the mean time I'm concerned that she left the kennel unlocked! Anyway, the lady was surprised we were calling and had lost track of time and was an hour away from the kennel. But more importantly she was surprised that we were there because she hadn't written down our reservation!!!! Hubs had the email confirmation though. Luckily she had one run left. She said it was luckily for us, but really it was lucky for her!!!! I don't know what we would have done if that run wouldn't have been available though. Although hubs said one of our church members would have pitched in for us. So I took Kapono out into the fenced in yard area and when I let her in she happily ran into the open caged run. I was glad she seemed happy to be there but a little concerned now at the professionalism of the kennel owner. Fast forward to the end of our trip when we picked her up...Kapono had been a good girl there and was safe (and clean). So it all worked out and this over-protective dog mom was happy, and the kennel owner apologized a few times.

So anyway, after we dropped Kapono off we drove up to Minneapolis to the airport for our flight. We ended up being pretty early for our flight but we'd rather wait safely at the airport than be stressed out in traffic. Check in and security took less than 15 minutes so we had a decent meal and drinks at the Minnesota Wild (our favorite hockey team) teamed restaurant). We hadn't planned on eating here but I guess it was fate since we were wearing our Disney Minnesota Wild themed shirts.

The seats we were in used to be 1st class but now the company is going more the Spirit route and these seats were $45 more to the base ticket price. So for that we thought it was a deal to have slightly bigger seats and more foot space for the flight.
IMG_5766.JPG

Adios Minnesota!
IMG_5767.JPG

We flew into LAX and took an Uber to Anaheim. The traffic was a little heavy in the arrival/departure area so it took our Uber driver a little while about 10-15 minutes to get to us, but it didn't seem too bad. We made it to Anaheim in about 40 minutes (our driver was a speed demon) but that was okay with us. We checked into our hotel the Best Western Park Place Inn, literally across the street from the entrance as seen below. We went to the ticket booth and purchased/cashed in 4 day park hoppers for our annual passes with Max pass and gleefully entered Disneyland with about 40 minutes until park close!

It is so good! A student had some cheese popcorn at school the other day and it looked good but in my head I was like “it’s no Garret’s!” She offered me some but I just can’t eat any other cheese popcorn it just isn’t worth the calories.

I love cheese popcorn, so I would never turn it down.. but in my head... I still think I wish this were garrett's!

A lot of people rope drop Space Mt, Peter Pan, Indiana Jones, but what do we rope drop.....Alice in Wonderland. I think this is one of the best dark rides ever.

362515

After Alice we (I) usually go on the tea cups but Brad has another idea. He has this weird love for the Storybookland Canal boats and he wanted to do that next. And here is where his dream comes true......usually the tiny boats are crammed with people but today we got our own boat! He was one happy guy!
362525

It was so nice to have our own boat, we had more freedom to turn and look at things and we could actually hear the cast member doing her spiel. She also chatted with us about her love for Epcot because she noticed my ears were from Flower and Garden a couple years ago.

It was a nice relaxing journey.
362518

362519

362520

362521

Then we did the tea cups.
362526

We have never ridden together, so we decided we would give it a whirl. Brad normally tries not spin as much as possible and I try to spin as much as possible. But the Disneyland cups are very hard to get spinning so I have learned to just sit back and relax on the cups.

Sitting together wasn't a huge mistake, there was plenty of room on the seat of the cup but the leg room was tight for two adults.
362522

Then it was time for old school Soarin'....Dumbo! We know better than to try to sit together here.

After Dumbo we paid our respects to Mr. Toad and then had our first fast pass at Space Mountain.
362532

No pictures of us on Space, I mean we have one but I'm not sharing we both look totally crazy. Sorry.

But here are a few Tomorrowland area pictures.
362533

362534

We decided to take the train from Tomorrowland to Main Street so we could see the Grand Canyon diorama. The train station was empty so that was strange, and once we got on the train only the Grand Canyon portion was open. The dinosaurs were on Spring Break, that that portion was just black wall.

362537

362539

B really wanted to have his picture taken with Goofy because of the shirt he was wearing that day. So we hoped when we got to Main Street that Goofy would be doing some meet and greets and that his line would be short.
362538

The Goof was out and his line was short!
362542

Goofy loved Brad's shirt!
362543

Next up was a fast pass for Big Thunder! And we were gifted the back row! Score for Brad and Amy!

After Thunder we rode the Mark Twain again. And again no 3rd deck, but we enjoyed the journey anyway.

After the Twain we hopped over to the Haunted Mansion and then it was time for a snack. We headed over to the Mint Julep bar/French Market area and got some beignets. Except we decided to try the special ones....
362554

OMG! These were delicious! The butterscotch gave it a caramel flavor that was light and wonderful! So we shared the three (a mistake really....should have gotten the 6 pack!) and I enjoyed some coffee and B had a Coke. We just relaxed for awhile and enjoyed the atmosphere.

After our relaxing snack, we headed into Adventureland for Indiana Jones and the Jungle Cruise. After the Jungle Cruise we decided to walk through the new Tropical Hideaway restaurant area. We weren't hungry but it was fun to check out the details of the area and say hi to Rosita. It is a really cool area and lots of fun details to check out over time.

I think I'd really like that, too. Love the retro-type rides, and since I've never been to DL (and if I ever get there), I'm certain I'd definitely try out the Storybookland Canal boats!

And since I'm moving on to some food I should probably tag @Cesar R M , he seems to appreciate some good food.;):)

We headed back over to the parks and decided to get our eat on at DCA for Food and Wine. We stopped and picked up our Sip and Savor pass and we both bought an AP Food and Wine shirt. View attachment 362366

There were two AP shirts, we got just a regular Mickey Food and Wine (I think it is like the one on the Sip and Savor pass I'm holding.).
There was this design too, but since we had no plans to buy this soda we passed on this one. It was a cute design though.

Time to eat!

Like at all Disney festivals there aren't many tables but we found a spot near two of the booths we wanted to try so I held the spot while Brad got our first round. This was the view behind me. A little vineyard.
View attachment 362361

We decided to share food so we could try more dishes. First round was a puff pastry ham and cheese pinwheel with pistachios. We really liked this so we were off to a great start! This was from a booth called Nuts About Cheese! I thought this was a great booth, I love cheese and nuts. Some people might even say I am nuts!
View attachment 362368

The next booth was the Citrus Grove. We shared the orange chicken and rice and the Citrus-brined Pork Roast with tangy Barbecue Sauce and Lemon Pepper Slaw. Both sounded so good and looked good. The portion sizes were big, especially the pork roast. Both were pretty bad. When the best part of a the orange chicken are the little mandarin orange slices that are garnishing it that isn't a good thing. Actually right before B came back with the dishes a lady next to me was chatting with someone on her phone and I overheard her talking about some dishes she had tried and the she was very vehement about how bad the orange chicken was so when B appeared a moment later with it I was really hoping she was wrong. She wasn't. I wasn't biased about it from that lady either because I didn't tell Brad about what the lady said until later and he hated it too and he normally loves orange chicken.

So here is what the dishes looked like.
View attachment 362379

After "dishes" we went on Soarin', looked at some merch and decided to try another booth.
Some of the merch, @JenniferS I got one of the trash can salt & pepper shakers.

Those beignets look soooo good!

There were really good, and they should be there still when I go over Easter! I can pig out!

I think I'd really like that, too. Love the retro-type rides, and since I've never been to DL (and if I ever get there), I'm certain I'd definitely try out the Storybookland Canal boats!

It is a cute ride, I think you would like it.

In the small amount of time in the 15 minutes before we were let into the park and official rope drop we met up with Pluto, Goofy, Minnie and Chip. We also witnessed the cutest encounter with a little girl and Chip.
View attachment 345416

View attachment 345409View attachment 345410View attachment 345412

As we were walking over to meet with Chip a little girl (as seen in the picture below holding a brown bag) gave Chip a jar of peanuts. He jumped about with joy and hugged the girl a couple times. Then he ran around in circles and then ran backstage and quickly reappeared and kept hugging the girl he was so excited over the peanuts! It was cute and funny. I'd never seen anyone give a character a gift so it was fun to see the interaction.

As we got done meeting Chip we decided to take the trolley down to the castle. As we were walking to the trolley we heard the opening announcement. So in the short amount of time we had already spent in the park we had already had a fantastic time. It was shaping up to be a great day!

As people raced down Main Street to the rope drop we decided to hang out in Town Square. We were hoping that Mickey would come out for pictures before we headed to Fantasyland. He did not, but that was fine, we enjoyed some time on a bench and the atmosphere.

So here are some scenes from Town Square and from the hub area. I think I took way too many pictures of the pink trees in the hub, but they are so gorgeous I couldn't help myself.

Those clouds sure looked ominous on your first day. I'm glad it didn't open up and pour on you guys! Those peanut butter eggs looked delicious!!! :hungry: Bummer about the slider...it looked so promising.

The scrim looks great. It's nice that they were more creative and didn't just do the castle art for the whole thing.

I'm living vicariously through you guys...I don't think we will be going back until either October or January. 😢

Another look at the details of Tropical Hideaway, some lights for @Doc Disney

362809

Then we went to relax and enjoy a tropical serenade at the Tiki Room.
362811

Brad wanted to get a little artsy with a back shot of me in my Tiki spirit jersey and the tiki birds.
362810

Next up....lunch at the Riverbelle Terrace. We had booked the Fantasmic dining package. It was our first time eating there and I was nervous because I had read mixed reviews about it. But we figured we would try something new. I like doing the Fantasmic dining packages but honestly I'm not a huge fan of the Blue Bayou, although I do like the seat cushions they give you for Fantasmic. But we brought our own from home so we didn't miss getting that as a "perk" of our meal. Overall this (Riverbelle) seemed like a good option, and it is something we would do again.

The food was really good at the Riverbelle. Brad really loves BBQ and I am a little more picky about it and have to be in the mood to eat it so I was pleasantly surprised at this place. The only 2 complaints I had was that my salad was WAY overdressed and our main courses came too fast. I had literally put my last bite of salad in my mouth and the waiter showed up with our entrees.

my salad
362812

Brad got the corn chowder. He liked it but he didn't eat a lot of it, he claims soups fill him up too much. He says it is because soup is so warm. Whatever.....anyway the waiter must have thought he didn't like it and offered to bring him the salad instead. We both thought that it was nice of him and good service to offer a substitute.
362813

I got the short ribs and OH MY was this good! The meat was tender and the sauce was super good a bit tart and spicy. YUM! Under the meat was mashed potatoes. At first the portion looked small but it was filling.
362814

B got the ribs and tots. He loves both of those things, and he liked these.
362821

I got the Maleficent dragon for dessert and B got the parfait. We enjoyed both. Although the parfait tasted mostly like a fancy butterscotch pudding. Which when I offer to make butterscotch pudding at home B says he doesn't like it but here he liked it. Hmmmm?
The dragon was mostly a chocolate mousse kind of dessert and was supposed to have a blackberry filling which I think was the glaze. It mostly tasted like chocolate.
