2011 Point Charts - Bad for Weekday Stays

2011 Point Charts are out and the points needed for a weekday stay are again going up and the points needed for a weekend stay are going down per day. This is the second year that this has happend. For one that only goes during the weekdays, this is going to effect the amount of points I need for my 5 day stay (Sun-Fri).

I've heard of a lot of people in the same predicament, especially those who bought just enough points for a specific number of days in one particular season. On the other hand, those that stay for 8 or 9 nights with 3 or 4 weekend nights have seen a significant decrease from 2009 levels. Our trip with 3 weekend nights (Friday to the next week Saturday) from 2009 would require 10 fewer points in 2011.

I don't know but my guess is that's the point of the change. Many found the premium for weekend nights just too high and only stay 5 nights, sunday to friday.

I don't think the point change will have a major impact. My guess is that many people used to plan trips to avoid one, or both, weekend days in the past to save points. With the new change they will most likely just modify the days they stay and probably stay one, or both, of the weekend days.

In the end people will most likely stay roughly the same length and just include weekends.

The real upside for some people is it makes those quick weekend getaways a little easier because you will use points.

Exactly.

Makes going for just a quick weekend somthing I am willing to 'spend' points on now.

I think the points charts are more in line with reality now.
When I first joined DVC, I couldn't believe the premium placed on weekend stays.

But I can see how someone who bought in planning to go mostly on weekdays would be unhappy with the changes.

In a similar vein, I can imagine the premium placed on weekend nights to be a reason why many people who tend to go to WDW 2 or 3 times a year, but on 4-5 night weekend jaunts, considered DVC cost-prohibitive. The people who may sell their interests because these changes affects their plans negatively will, I'd be willing to bet, be more than replaced by people who would find the new point charts proof that DVC works for them,

First I do not plan my interest in DVC, but I am still going to be going for my Sunday - Friday stay. This is going to cost me more than I orginially planned when I purchased my points. I will even have to add more points to stay the same as I have done for the last five trips.

At the same time I know that those that run the DVC have to adjust the points to keep members in the rooms 7 days a week. This is the only way to make DVC work.

It is in our contracts that the points for a 7 day stay need to the stay the same, so the can feasibly charge 1 pt for night for 6 and then everything else on the 7th. I think this is a good move as we were doing sun-thurs trips almost exclusively.

Respectfully, that's not quite correct. The ONLY requirement is that the total points for the resort cannot change. They can raise points for a 1-bedroom for a week, but must lower some other season, or room type, etc. to compensate. They could theoretically double the points required for a two bedroom villa, and then cut the points for 1-bedrooms and studios in half to compensate. Make it 1 point a night to stay in a grand villa in holiday season, and 100 points a night for a studio in value season.

Do those changes make sense? Of course not, and they'd never do these things. But under the contract, any kind of gyrations are permitted as long as the TOTAL remains the same. Check the contract - it's there.

Lynne is correct - It is the total points for each resort. Some weeks change due to the seasons and time of year, but this is the first time that the DVC has made a major change to the point charts in two years in a row. All I can guess is that weekend demand has really going down. Hope this is the balance point between weekend and weekday.

I finally got around to calculating the net difference between the 2009, 2010 and 2011 point charts and the impact to me.

I saved about 20 points a year in the 2010 point reallocation, and about another 20 points per year in the 2011 point reallocation.

This, both point reallocations were beneficial to me! I came out a winner both times. It's like I have 40 more points each year.

For UK DVC members this is a dream come true, We got to Disney roughly every 18months but we could usually only stay for 11/ 12 nights as we could not afford 2 weekends. I haven't checked the new charts yet but I imagine this could be excllent news for us :sohappy:
