2011 Package Reservations available...sort of!

The following was posted yesterday in JP Von Drake's thread from last year about 2010 package rates:

It used to be that you could book your room 18 months in advance by getting a room only reservation. The problem with that was two-fold 1) You had to pay a full night's stay deposit 2) When you were ready to book a package, the travel company had to cancel your room only reservation and rebook it as a package.

It looks like WDW reservations finally got it right. As of 7/18/10, guests can now book future package stays via the Basic Package.

The Basic Package allows you to book your room under the package category so when future dining and ticket prices come out, you simply add-on to the package. No need to rebook - you keep the same reservation number. And the best part? You only have to pay the $200.00 deposit.

How do I know all of this? I just booked my room for 2011 using the basic package! :sohappy:

Last week, I had called and booked a room only for Carribbean Beach and, based on what I just quoted, I called back this morning and asked if the above info is correct. The CM on the phone said it is, indeed, correct, and that 2011 room rates are now finalized and that a basic package can now be reserved for 2011 based on those prices. Then, presumably in August, when dining plan and ticket prices are made available for 2011, you can call back and simply add those to the package, without having to cancel and re-book...since it is already booked as a package.

So she cancelled my room only reservation and re-booked it as a basic package and told me that this is the official, locked in room rate for April of 2011. She gave me a new reservation number and, as it usually seems to be with a package reservation, the confirmation number started out with two letters, whereas my room only last week was just the usual numbers only.

Just thought some of you would want to know!

Oh, by the way, so as not to mislead anyone, the above quote was not by JP Von Drake himself. But regardless, I called this morning and verified it.

Rats, we booked room only two weeks ago and paid the one night deposit at max rates. Since we already have the all digits reservation number, we might as well wait until the packages come out before we rebook.

What should I do???

I'm planning on going in April 2011. Should I book that basic package now, or wait until the whole packages come out in August? I don't do the dining plan, and know which hotel I want. I'm confused...HELP!!!

If you have the money for the deposit, I say book it now and reserve your room. You can add in your tickets in a few weeks when they come out. :)

Edit: The OP quoted me. ;)

Wow, I definitely know how a stand up comic feels when he has a "tough room"! I posted this last night and figured it would have at least two pages of replies by the time I got up this morning, but I logged on and found not one reply! Then when I logged on after work, there was a whopping 3 replies! As excited as everyone gets when packages and room rates finally become available, I figured this thread would be buzzing, but maybe it all depends on who the poster is...oh well, so I'm not in the "in crowd" here at wdwmagic...I guess there are worse things!

There really isn't any appeal to a package if you're not doing the dining plan, so you might be better off just booking a room only. In the event that plans go awry and you have to cancel, with a room only, you can cancel up to 5 days prior to arrival with no penalty. However, with a package, you have to cancel 45 or more days out in order to not have a penalty. Otherwise there is a $100 penalty for cancelling within 45 days, and a $200 penalty for cancelling within 7 days off arrival. Unless some discount code comes out that is exclusively for packages, I'm not sure if there is any reason to book a package. Heck, you could possibly even SAVE money by booking a room only now, and ordering your tickets NOW so as to beat the probable price increase around the first of August. Granted, the price increase would only 20 bucks or less per ticket (it's usually around 3 or 4 dollars for a one day pass, but I'm not sure how that translates to a multi-day pass).

I called them today if they have updated for 2011 they said no and I also found out that AAA isn't being offered yet which was the reason I wanted to call them..So sadly not a big loss..I'm still pleased to see my price $600 less than before.

How does someone go ahead and book this "Basic Package?"

Booking online still prompts that Disney is only accepting reservations through the end of 2010 (for packages and Room only).

Just curious how you all were able to book?

I just called them on the phone. I'm generally not a big fan of doing things like that online.

I told them that I had read on wdwmagic that there is a new thing this year called a "basic package" as I described above and she said that is correct. So to be even more clear, I specifically asked "so room rates for 2011 are available now", to which she replied "2011 room rates ARE available" (or some quote to that effect).

Basically, what I gather from the whole thing is that, as opposed to previous years, when everything is released all at once, this year they have the room rates finalized and released for 2011, but have not yet released 2011 ticket prices and DDP info. So rather than have us wait until everything is out, they are letting us book a basic package with just the room rate, and then we can add the other later.

Gotcha, thanks for the info. I have a trip coming up next week and I'm hoping to get a bounceback offer for May 2011. Not sure if that will happen, but if not I will give them a call when I get back! Thanks again!
