Pre-Trip 2 Broke Guys (now with Table of Contents!)

Important note: First post edited 7/13/17 to make this odyssey easier to follow!

The reason is I started this pre-trip report over a year ago to help plan our most important trip ever (so far) our 10 year wedding anniversary trip.

However, we have AP's, and we took many short "side-trips" along the way. Rather than creating so many Trip Report threads and looking like a total egomaniac, I just added those mini-TR's into this same thread.

People have said it was hard to follow (I can see that.) Someone suggested putting a "table of contents" in the beginning. So that's what I'm doing. Then you can skip to the pages with the other trip reports, or just read the ones pertaining to "the big one" coming up in early September, 2017.

I will post that trip report separately when it finally happens, but will of course link to it here.

Speaking of linking here, here's a little background. This old post details our vow renewals a few years ago, for a very specific reason. If you haven't read my other trip reports or interacted with me very much on the boards, it kind of sets the stage for what's to come. Here's that link:

http://forums.wdwmagic.com/threads/...orporate-disney-into-your-vow-renewal.903761/

What follows is the original first post (from 2/11/16) of this long, long thread. At the end of it, I'll put the table of contents to guide you through the rest of the thread.

I am sitting here in a hotel in Tampa, just an hour away from "home." And I'm thinking about it LOL. Oh, am I thinking about it.

When I'm "home home" - in Fort Lauderdale, I never have time to do more than some quick posts because I am always busy with work.

This is going to be a long-@ss pre-trip report.

Not necessarily this first post, but the report as a whole - by necessity, since the trip isn't until early September 2017. And I know I can use some help and advice in putting this all together - it's a very special trip - and have already begun organizing my thoughts based on discussions on this forum.

The basic premise is this: We are going to spend our 10-year wedding anniversary celebration at WDW, with the centerpiece of that trip to be the biggest dinner we can afford at Victoria & Albert's (hopefully the chef's table.) One of the things we enjoy most about Disney in our forties are the amazing meals at places like the Flying Fish Cafe and the Yachtsman's Steakhouse. I expect this meal will be at least as mind-blowing, but probably more.

The catch is - it costs a freaking fortune (at least to us.) I'm estimating something like $600 to $800 when all is said and done(?) And there is no way I could justify spending that much money on one meal.

Except...we have the Disney Chase Visa card, and have come to rely on this for our last several trips. This has opened doors to new experiences that we couldn't afford before. Instead of getting a 4-day ticket, we started getting AP's. Instead of staying off property, we started staying at Disney Moderates. And loved it!

And - we have a year off (sort of) to save up for this magical trip and important celebration. For the last several years, we've been getting the Florida Resident Weekday Select Annual Pass every other year, never two years in a row. I think it's good to go away and miss it for awhile, especially with all the work being done. Stay away for a year and come back to lots of little surprises. (Like those metal detectors! Ha!) They're fine. Anyway, that's the responsible side of me to say we shouldn't spend that much money every year. (We really shouldn't.)

But the advantage of that in this case is to amass Disney Chase Visa card points for months on end (sort of.) We used up all the rest of our points on our last short trip in January of 2016. But then at the end of the month, we earned more money. It's just sitting there...LOL.

Well, I made a deal with myself - if I can save up that $700 or $800 just in Chase points, then I can justify booking that meal at Victoria & Albert's. So that is the first goal. I know somebody will tell me when is the first day I can book it, and I will make a note on my phone so I don't forget LOL.

Based on January rewards being $146.50, I'm thinking this should be cake. (Mmm...cake...)

I'm not saving up for this September, but next September 2017. Total cake, right?!

Then we have to figure out where to stay. I'd like it to be our first Deluxe (possibly on the special floor with the extra goodies) and probably our first DVC rental. DVC Upside - real cost is less. Downside - can't pay for it with Disney Chase dollars LOL. That is funny, but it is a real consideration.

There's the obvious choice - to stay in the Grand Floridian to be where Victoria & Albert's is.

I don't know if that would be my favorite place in general.

I think my favorite place might be the Polynesian - I like the food & the vibe - and the walking into MK. I think that's a must on this trip - have to be able to walk to somewhere. That would include all of the Boardwalk area properties, which are fine with me as well.

Or AK with the Savannah view.

Then there's the corny and sentimental way - 10 years ago, our honeymoon was to Key West. They have a Key West DVC hotel. We love Olivia's. Somehow it doesn't seem big deal enough or have something special like a footpath to MK lol.

At the very least, a monorail resort, even if not walking distance, would be preferred.

Then we have to figure out whether or not to bring the dog or leave her home, drive or fly, diet for 6 months for the pictures LOL. Maybe this one and only trip would be worth memory maker?

I want to really blow it out - something we will never forget. Go for the upgrades. Pick the right tour or tours. So much to discuss!!

I will end each post in this saga like the parodied "2 Broke Girls" TV show, with the dollar amount of whatever they have left or have made at the end of the show, so you can see where they are in their goal.

So for example, tonight's would be:

$146.50

I'll add in any WDW Gift Cards I might buy or receive in the next year as part of what's saved up for that trip. My free BJ's trial period just expired, so I won't be getting any discounted GC's from them.

Now - the potential issue: there is no way we are not going to go to Disney in some way until September of 2017. We are toying with skipping our usual January or April trip in order to go full-on crazy in September.

But we are also toying with things like my dilemma as I sit here in this hotel with all this time to type. We're less than an hour away. I told this story in more detail at the end of my last trip report thread, so I'll just make it very short: Brian is working in Tampa from the end of January until the middle of February (over three weeks.) Yesterday I packed up our pup and drove up to visit, with our Valentine's Day gifts in tow (mostly specialty sugar-free chocolate dipped pretzels potato chips, oreos, plus peppermint bark, etc. We know we won't see each other for Valentine's Day, so basically tomorrow is it, unless I stay until Saturday morning.

Since no WDW trip was planned, I did not bring either my Tables In Wonderland card, or my Chase rewards gift card. But I called, and confirmed I could go to Guest Services and get another gift card (which of course can be loaded automatically.) There's a nice lunch reservation open. There's a spot for the pup at Best Friends Pet Care for 1/2 day care.

On the one hand - this would be something like a 45 minute to 1 hour drive for Brian from 12:30 to 1:30 to go to a special Disney lunch at 1:50, hang out for a bit, and then drive back 45 minutes to an hour to go to work by 4PM until 4AM. (I would have my own car, spend more money buying Disney records for my record store after lunch, go pick up the dog, and drive home to Fort Lauderdale.)

The other option is to drop the pup off at Petco in Tampa for a shampoo, and then hurry to whatever local restaurant is near that Petco, and meh.

Who would ever forget picking up and driving to WDW just for lunch for Valentine's Day (early) There's a fun story to remember when we're in our 60's LOL.

But it would already deplete our current total towards our V&A goal:

$146.50

This is us getting sick of little beers and getting big beers in Germany. I love grapefruit beer.

The beef is from Africa, served with the unfortunately named pap.

Oh, and it looks like it's going to cost $2400 to fix the car, but we're ignoring all that and drinking right now.

It's getting crazy up in here!

The line to see the 2nd Air Supply show was ridic!

And then they cleared the seats because of the possible storm and told everyone to go into the American Adventure lol. (we were not in line.)

Ok - stuff happens before I can type it LOL.

We got in line for the Chase lounge - and so did 30 other people right before us. A cast member came out and announced to everyone to give up and take cover elsewhere. (They only let someone in after someone else leaves - and who's going to leave now?)

But then they let us all in. We thought the lines would be crazy - but they all piled into the elevator and we ran up the stairs - first in line for another apple pie cider and glass of wine. Winning!

Ok - no way we'll get a seat, right? The main room was full - just in case, we walked into the back room - bam! One open table. Ta-da!

Who knows what's next? Will Air Supply go on? Will the park empty out so we can walk-on to Frozen Ever After?

...will it even rain at all?!?

Stay tuned lol.

frozen Twinings pumpkin chai tea with caramel(!) vodka.
Sounds amazing. As does the grapefruit beer and the half dozen other things I'm seeing.

Never ended up getting back to that (so far) but here's the thing: most of the beer is around $4 and most of the wine is $5 or $6 - all, as you know, are smaller than normal serving sizes, and that's fine. But all of the ones that sounded "special" were $9.50 each, and for those little cups, I couldn't bring myself to do it. But they really sound great!

Complain to management and demand a few Fastpasses on your MyMagicPlus!!

For Frozen!!

We passed by Frozen and they were very smart the way they designed it - the whole queue is indoors - it looks like there's no line but you walk up to the entrance and it's a 90 minute wait.

We're kind of wishing we did that at this point - been in the Chase lounge for around 90 minutes and still pouring out there - but still pouring in here, too (my apple pie cider!)

I am so confused. I thought I was reading the Victoria and Albert's big anniversary portion of your trip report but I just went back and re-read the first few thousand pages ;) and realized that this is more of an in and out. Senility has finally crept up on me.

Anyway, loving all the details. I am sure it is as hot and humid as a walk through Hades, but you guys seem to be able to have a good time no matter what, car and back being two cases in point.

Hope the trip continues to be fantastic!

I was going to temporarily change the title but didn't want to confuse people LOL.

OK. Good morning! There was a little more last night, but I was too beat to post.

After being trapped like Rapunzel in the tower of Chase Lounge for literally hours as it downpoured around the world (there are worse places to be trapped - they had plenty of apple pie cider) it slowed down enough for us to walk without a poncho, right around 8:30PM.

Air Supply never got to do their 2nd or 3rd shows. (I hope they still get paid!! Good contracts are important LOL.)

We passed by Frozen on the way just to see if we lucked out and the park cleared out with all that rain, and we'd get on...but it was completely closed already!

We had a little time to kill before the 9:35 bus back to the hotel, and thought we were going to do Spaceship Earth on the way out, until I remembered...records. Stopped at Mouse Gear and eventually found multiples of all of these:

disney-records.jpg

People like me :geek: will be very excited about this because except for Nightmare, I can't even order any of these titles from my distributor yet - they are listed as not being released until November! (We Got The Beats Record Store has the exclusive! LOL)

Of course, it took awhile to ring up, because we always need a manager for a tax-exempt sale (for resale) and by the time we got out of there, it was around 9:15 and had started raining again. Hated to do it at that late hour, but we had to break open the dollar tree ponchos to walk to the bus stop.

When we got there, there were a lot of people waiting, and the bus stop for non-Disney buses is not covered, so we were all standing there in the rain. Another bus driver pulled up and let us all wait on his bus until our bus came. I thought that was so nice.

Our bus came, and it seemed like an hour long drive, but was really only about 40 minutes LOL. Yikes.

With few options, we ordered Chinese. We never really had a meal all day, just those bites, and hadn't had one of those since getting trapped in the Chase lounge several hours ago. (Doesn't R. Kelly have a song about being trapped in the Chase lounge? He should.)

Side note: this was the first time the Chase Lounge did not have wristbands for preferred seating for the concert.

Back to the story: we ordered Chinese, caught up on the news (hooray for catching that bomber so quickly! My first apartment when I was 17 years old was in the Elmora section of Elizabeth, NJ, not far from where that chicken place is now.)

Really, really wanted to do rope drop/welcome show for the first time ever, especially with Tuvalu on the scene. But didn't set an alarm. If it happens, it happens. Our resort had a bus to MK at 9:30AM - way too late, but they had a bus to Epcot at 7:30 AM, which we could obviously then bop over to MK in plenty of time. We'd have to get up about 6:30AM to make it.

I woke up at 6:30 AM without setting an alarm. I quickly realized my head felt a little foggy. It may have had something to do with these pre-bedtime shots of Crown Royal in fun-size mini-Red Solo shot cups:

redsoloshotcups.jpg

...but who can say for sure?

Brian was snoring. I couldn't do that to him. Diabetics need extra rest LOL. I know he would have done it if I woke him up (he's a gem like that) but I felt bad. No, literally, I felt bad - my head LOL.

I got out of bed, and quickly realized some discomfort was back in my back, calf, ankle. That shot may have worn off or may be wearing off (not the shot of Crown Royal, the shot from the doctor on Sunday.) Plus 12 hours of walking yesterday (except for the Chase lounge sit-fest.)

I decided to take a hot bath and a mild back pain pill, and felt 100% better. Until Brian told me the mechanic called, and the part to fix our car needed to be special ordered, and would be in next Tuesday.

At this point, several thoughts go running through your head...an extra week at Disney? o_O:p

Well, Brian might lose his job...and my dog would hate us forever...but an extra week at Disney?! :jawdrop::confused::mad::( (the five emojis of grief.)

So, no rope drop, and probably no MK today at all. We had to go into problem-solving mode and quickly make a back-up plan. The mechanic said he may have a slight chance at an alternative, and would call us back within a half-hour. That was over an hour ago.

I looked at flights: not practical. (Maybe we could just fly Brian home and I could stay for...an extra week...at Disney:cautious: without Brian? All by myself? But Tuvalu is here. But without Brian? Wait, I'm thinking...LOL. just kidding.)

I looked at car rentals, and Budget rent-a-car seems to (I say that because sometimes when you go to book there are surprises) have a very reasonable compact car one-way rental for $56 for one day. We could get it today around 12:30 (probably have to uber/cab to it but it's nearby) use it today for WDW (bonus!) drive both of us home first thing tomorrow morning, and return it close to home at 12:30 tomorrow. Brian could use my car to go to work, and I can easily bike to my store or just let my employees cover it for a few more days.

Then we'd have to take my car back up next week to pick up Brian's car (and maybe make rope drop at MK one day? Can we stay an extra day? Please? How could we drive up here and not see Mickey?! I haven't even suggested this to Brian yet LOL. You guys are my test audience.)

Oh yeah, $2400 to fix his car, don't remember if I've mentioned that part here yet.

Anyway, today's revised plan: chill this morning, free hot breakfast at the hotel (already accomplished) and follow-up with the mechanic in the next few minutes. Depending on what he says, book the rental car or not, scrap MK from today's plans, and just head to HS for lunch by 1 to 2PM or so (after picking up the rental car, we'd have to drive to the mechanic to get some things Brian left in there that he needs for work) and stay through Star Wars fireworks and Flying Fish. But starting first with the Tune-In Lounge and very seriously getting our Lounge on. I will lounge the heck out of myself this afternoon LOL. Make that "we." We will lounge like lounge lizards. Bartender - shots, please!

In all seriousness, yes there have been some issues, but we have everything to be grateful about. We could have broken down 2 hours into the drive in the middle of nowhere and never made it to Disney. We could have brought the dog in the car and in all ways complicated things and stressed her out. We could not have the room on our credit cards for this emergency huge expense. We could not have our tax refund coming that will cover that expense (we filed an extension and filed late this year.) All things happen for a reason. We are solid. We can handle all of it. And we will have one heck of a 9-year anniversary dinner, 12 days late, at our favorite Flying Fish tonight (although I may order something less expensive with all this happening LOL.)

Next year at the big 10 year anniversary and V&A's, we can remember the sort of disaster this trip was when we broke down near a toll booth in the rain with our two broken backs (Brokeback Mountain - a new MK attraction?) for year number nine and have a good laugh and a drink.

I will find you today, @Tuvalu !! ROFL.
