Pre-Trip 2 Broke Guys (now with Table of Contents!)

Important note: First post edited 7/13/17 to make this odyssey easier to follow!

The reason is I started this pre-trip report over a year ago to help plan our most important trip ever (so far) our 10 year wedding anniversary trip.

However, we have AP's, and we took many short "side-trips" along the way. Rather than creating so many Trip Report threads and looking like a total egomaniac, I just added those mini-TR's into this same thread.

People have said it was hard to follow (I can see that.) Someone suggested putting a "table of contents" in the beginning. So that's what I'm doing. Then you can skip to the pages with the other trip reports, or just read the ones pertaining to "the big one" coming up in early September, 2017.

I will post that trip report separately when it finally happens, but will of course link to it here.

Speaking of linking here, here's a little background. This old post details our vow renewals a few years ago, for a very specific reason. If you haven't read my other trip reports or interacted with me very much on the boards, it kind of sets the stage for what's to come. Here's that link:

http://forums.wdwmagic.com/threads/...orporate-disney-into-your-vow-renewal.903761/

What follows is the original first post (from 2/11/16) of this long, long thread. At the end of it, I'll put the table of contents to guide you through the rest of the thread.

I am sitting here in a hotel in Tampa, just an hour away from "home." And I'm thinking about it LOL. Oh, am I thinking about it.

When I'm "home home" - in Fort Lauderdale, I never have time to do more than some quick posts because I am always busy with work.

This is going to be a long-@ss pre-trip report.

Not necessarily this first post, but the report as a whole - by necessity, since the trip isn't until early September 2017. And I know I can use some help and advice in putting this all together - it's a very special trip - and have already begun organizing my thoughts based on discussions on this forum.

The basic premise is this: We are going to spend our 10-year wedding anniversary celebration at WDW, with the centerpiece of that trip to be the biggest dinner we can afford at Victoria & Albert's (hopefully the chef's table.) One of the things we enjoy most about Disney in our forties are the amazing meals at places like the Flying Fish Cafe and the Yachtsman's Steakhouse. I expect this meal will be at least as mind-blowing, but probably more.

The catch is - it costs a freaking fortune (at least to us.) I'm estimating something like $600 to $800 when all is said and done(?) And there is no way I could justify spending that much money on one meal.

Except...we have the Disney Chase Visa card, and have come to rely on this for our last several trips. This has opened doors to new experiences that we couldn't afford before. Instead of getting a 4-day ticket, we started getting AP's. Instead of staying off property, we started staying at Disney Moderates. And loved it!

And - we have a year off (sort of) to save up for this magical trip and important celebration. For the last several years, we've been getting the Florida Resident Weekday Select Annual Pass every other year, never two years in a row. I think it's good to go away and miss it for awhile, especially with all the work being done. Stay away for a year and come back to lots of little surprises. (Like those metal detectors! Ha!) They're fine. Anyway, that's the responsible side of me to say we shouldn't spend that much money every year. (We really shouldn't.)

But the advantage of that in this case is to amass Disney Chase Visa card points for months on end (sort of.) We used up all the rest of our points on our last short trip in January of 2016. But then at the end of the month, we earned more money. It's just sitting there...LOL.

Well, I made a deal with myself - if I can save up that $700 or $800 just in Chase points, then I can justify booking that meal at Victoria & Albert's. So that is the first goal. I know somebody will tell me when is the first day I can book it, and I will make a note on my phone so I don't forget LOL.

Based on January rewards being $146.50, I'm thinking this should be cake. (Mmm...cake...)

I'm not saving up for this September, but next September 2017. Total cake, right?!

Then we have to figure out where to stay. I'd like it to be our first Deluxe (possibly on the special floor with the extra goodies) and probably our first DVC rental. DVC Upside - real cost is less. Downside - can't pay for it with Disney Chase dollars LOL. That is funny, but it is a real consideration.

There's the obvious choice - to stay in the Grand Floridian to be where Victoria & Albert's is.

I don't know if that would be my favorite place in general.

I think my favorite place might be the Polynesian - I like the food & the vibe - and the walking into MK. I think that's a must on this trip - have to be able to walk to somewhere. That would include all of the Boardwalk area properties, which are fine with me as well.

Or AK with the Savannah view.

Then there's the corny and sentimental way - 10 years ago, our honeymoon was to Key West. They have a Key West DVC hotel. We love Olivia's. Somehow it doesn't seem big deal enough or have something special like a footpath to MK lol.

At the very least, a monorail resort, even if not walking distance, would be preferred.

Then we have to figure out whether or not to bring the dog or leave her home, drive or fly, diet for 6 months for the pictures LOL. Maybe this one and only trip would be worth memory maker?

I want to really blow it out - something we will never forget. Go for the upgrades. Pick the right tour or tours. So much to discuss!!

I will end each post in this saga like the parodied "2 Broke Girls" TV show, with the dollar amount of whatever they have left or have made at the end of the show, so you can see where they are in their goal.

So for example, tonight's would be:

$146.50

I'll add in any WDW Gift Cards I might buy or receive in the next year as part of what's saved up for that trip. My free BJ's trial period just expired, so I won't be getting any discounted GC's from them.

Now - the potential issue: there is no way we are not going to go to Disney in some way until September of 2017. We are toying with skipping our usual January or April trip in order to go full-on crazy in September.

But we are also toying with things like my dilemma as I sit here in this hotel with all this time to type. We're less than an hour away. I told this story in more detail at the end of my last trip report thread, so I'll just make it very short: Brian is working in Tampa from the end of January until the middle of February (over three weeks.) Yesterday I packed up our pup and drove up to visit, with our Valentine's Day gifts in tow (mostly specialty sugar-free chocolate dipped pretzels potato chips, oreos, plus peppermint bark, etc. We know we won't see each other for Valentine's Day, so basically tomorrow is it, unless I stay until Saturday morning.

Since no WDW trip was planned, I did not bring either my Tables In Wonderland card, or my Chase rewards gift card. But I called, and confirmed I could go to Guest Services and get another gift card (which of course can be loaded automatically.) There's a nice lunch reservation open. There's a spot for the pup at Best Friends Pet Care for 1/2 day care.

On the one hand - this would be something like a 45 minute to 1 hour drive for Brian from 12:30 to 1:30 to go to a special Disney lunch at 1:50, hang out for a bit, and then drive back 45 minutes to an hour to go to work by 4PM until 4AM. (I would have my own car, spend more money buying Disney records for my record store after lunch, go pick up the dog, and drive home to Fort Lauderdale.)

The other option is to drop the pup off at Petco in Tampa for a shampoo, and then hurry to whatever local restaurant is near that Petco, and meh.

Who would ever forget picking up and driving to WDW just for lunch for Valentine's Day (early) There's a fun story to remember when we're in our 60's LOL.

But it would already deplete our current total towards our V&A goal:

$146.50

OK, that was the first post of this whole thing. Now here comes the table of contents. Separate trip reports will be listed in bold. Regular stuff won't.

Can't wait to hear your opinion.:)

Oh, my. Maybe you don't want to hear. LOL.

Hint: it's not over, and I'm texting. And I would never text in a movie theater.

I found myself literally falling asleep a lot. Probably has more to do with my temporary state of exhaustion after record store day and what sometimes happens when you take your first day off and it all catches up to you.

I love Hermione. She was a draw for me to see this. I don't think I ever watched the animated version until within the last year or so. I was a young adult when it came out and had no interest.

Gaston is not cute. Maybe he would've held my attention otherwise. But I kept finding myself nodding off, again and again.

At one point I was between either ordering more food or leaving. I pressed the button and by the time the waitress came, I decided to ask for the check rather than for a crab sushi roll. Another 45 minutes of this was too much! I know, I can't believe I'm saying it, either!

I enjoyed maleficent and Cinderella. This one just didn't grab me. To be fair, maybe if I were fully awake it would have. Brian didn't want to go, and I'll have to now admit he was correct.

Well, I'm home early to catch some sun in the backyard with a Disney Podcast!

My biggest issue with the movie was Emma Watson. I liked her as Hermione, not as Belle so much. Her singing left much to be desired, in my opinion.;) Can't believe you left though before it ended. That's pretty surprising, although considering you live in sunshine mecca I can understand how the sun would be more of a draw.

I'm trying to remember any other times I ever actually left a movie before it was over. I know I desperately wanted to leave "Flatliners," but was there with friends. Ditto "evita" starring Madonna on Christmas day in New York City – it was torture. Three notes - over and over and over. Every song had the same three notes. Get some new notes!

But I don't remember walking out of another one. I wasn't angry or upset, I was just too bored to keep sitting there.

Only movie I ever walked out of was Pulp Fiction. It was waaaaay too bloody and violent for my taste. Ha! about the Evita. Dh was going through a box he kept all of the stuff he kept from our dating era last weekend.:inlove: He found a ticket stub from Evita. Didn't like it either. I am guessing there was nothing else out that week to see.;)

LAWD we have different taste in movies. I thought Maleficent was absolutely atrocious, but I gave this live action BatB a 4/5. Cinderella was pretty good too, so at least we agree on that ;)
Personally, I wish they would stop these live action remakes. Have they run out of new ideas? I was totally PO'd when I heard they are remaking Mary Poppins. I mean REALLY?!!? Can you top Dick Van and Julie Andrews. Who is approving these things???

I could type a book here about this. Remakes really frustrate me, but I'm usually curious enough to check them out anyway. They try using new ideas, and they half- them so they fail (Tomorrowland). They know remakes will bring in the DOLLAHZ so they keep making them.

Also yeah the dick van censorship is amusing.

I still have not watched and never will watch the Willy Wonka remake. The original is perfection and I don't even want to taint the memory of it with anything else.
Oh I so agree with this! On my top 10 favorite movie list. My kids love it too. DH and I love to nitpick it also. Like all of a sudden Grandpa Joe can just start doing leaps in the air after being like a vegetable for decades whille poor Charlie and his mom struggle to buy food. My son took it upon himself this school year to read every book Roald Dahl ever wrote. He seriously has some really strange but fun stories. :)

The bf and I were underwhelmed by BatB as well. I saw the original in the theatre like FOUR times - it was so theatrical and moving, I couldn't get enough. With the remake, I just couldn't connect to the weird little objects wandering around... I guess it's easier when it is animated and NOT live action. I missed so much of the music from the original film as well. PLUS where was any of the stuff written for the Broadway show?! We heard bits of it over and over, but they wrote four new sorely lacking pieces instead? weird.

I LOVED Cinderella. The dance at the ball brought a tear to my eye. That one was gorgeous AND full of heart. BatB was just gorgeous. I felt nothing for the CGI beast. I would have preferred an actor in a costume with real eyes to look into instead of the fake buffalo-man thing. The ONLY thing I felt they gained by using the CGI was the ability to give him more realistic beast shaped legs / haunches. I only saw them like three times that I recall. Why give up so much humanity for better legs?! We never understood why Belle would fall for this Beast either... no magic, no connection, no heart.

The idea of a live action Lion King makes me nauseous. Please, PLEASE say it isn't so.

I wasn't a fan either. Most of the scenes between two or three characters just felt flat. I liked the big group numbers but almost all of the solo singing was suuuuper processed. It literally sounded like they recorded Emma Watson speaking her lyrics in rhythm and then auto-tuned every syllable. Even Emma Thompson's voice sounded processed and she has more than held her own next to legit singers before. The bad singing was so distracting it was difficult to enjoy the things I did like, like most of the costumes.

Alas!

I think you nailed it about the CGI. I've always been resistant to it unless it's exceptionally well done. I'd rather see animation in general. I don't even like "animated CGI" where everybody has squarish heads. It's very dehumanizing, and the beast was so obviously fake and had no connection at all. I was thinking the exact same thing – I'd rather see an old-school costume on him.

I'm thinking about things...

For September, we are currently scheduled for the GF from the 6th to the 9th, and we tacked on CBR for the first night, the 5th, rather than doing what we normally do and stay off property the first night just to be in the area first thing in the morning.

I thought that night at CBR would eventually become super cheap. We have stayed there a few times and I'm pretty sure we never paid more than $130-ish per night. I'm absolutely certain one time was only $116 per night.

That room was booked at $199 for the one night, with the $75 gift card. I figured eventually it would go "on sale" closer to our usual price range, and then the $75 gift card would make it comparable in cost to our usual off-property first night. Bonus - we'd be at CBR, which we love and has meaning to us, for the first night of our trip.

With the recent 25% off sales announced, CBR is still high. Keep in mind, when we've stayed there before for less, it was functioning at full capacity (although certain rooms were being renovated.)

In the back of my head has also been wondering how much we will love the GF. The main reason for picking it was easy access to certain restaurants (and also a nice room with a more upscale feel.) We have afternoon tea there on the 7th and V&A on the 8th.

What I'm thinking of doing is making the 5th more of a "full day" than just a travel day, and taking one day away from GF (the 6th) and instead getting 2 nights at another deluxe resort we've always wanted to try - like AKL, Poly, or something Boardwalk-y.

Then we'd have 2 nights at one fun new place and 2 nights at another fun new place (GF.) It kind of hedges our bets and lets us experience two new places, and the things around them, with one splurge.

In the past, it's been a pain to change rooms if we stayed in one room longer, but arriving on the 5th and checking out on the 7th, I don't think we'll make enough mess for moving to be a hassle.

Bonus: pretty sure we'd save some money by cutting one night at GF, no matter where else we end up, even for 2 nights at the second place.

I'm leaning AK right now because #1 we've never done it and it's always seemed cool and kind of exotic, #2 I'm sure we'll have plenty of reasons to stay at a Boardwalk property down the road #3 definitely want to eat at Tiffins one night and of course, experience Pandora. #4 while we're staying at GF, we never have to travel "all the way" to AK.

Side note: I did call WDW a couple of days ago to make sure this would all be kosher, especially since our GF stay was booked with a 30% bounceback offer. They said it "should" be OK, provided rooms are still available. I guess I'd find out for sure when I call back. So we'd cut GF down to 2 nights but still 30% off, and we'd change (not cancel) CBR to another resort and add a night (the CM specified doing it that way to avoid messes with down payments, etc. to the extent that's possible.)

*Wild card longshot: DVC rental for the first two nights (or add another? HA! I'm crazy.)

Other wild card: B is still waiting to hear if he is getting hired at a new place. He's gone for multiple interviews but from what I understand there are several candidates going for the position. Not sure whether that would make our trip more difficult or easier vs. where he works now, but I told him to be clear with them at point of hiring that we already have a vacation scheduled for early September.

I think with AKL, I'd go "budget" aka non-savannah view, non concierge, and maybe keep fingers crossed for an upgrade (it would be our first ever) but we'd be happy with whatever.

This just seems like a more solid plan than showing up at construction-torn CBR the night before our "real trip" starts, and a double adventure.

Still thinking, but solidifying.

Also plotting my drive to/from Nashville to see about passing through Orlando...leaving this Saturday...

I think switching to AKL for a couple of nights is a great idea! Maybe if when you call and tell them your are celebrating your anniversary, they may put in an upgrade for you?
Good luck to B on the interview!

My goodness, my head is spinning trying to keep up with all of your possible plans! ;) When I go to WDW, I pick a hotel I like, book it, and stay there. (I must be boring--no sense of adventure . . . LOL :p)

I admire people who can jump around to different hotels in the same trip. (That's advanced, right there! :joyfull: ) Can't wait to hear your finalized plans.

OK, we're booked! I like this idea a lot better.

First two nights AKL, second two nights GF club level. :joyfull:

Now just waiting for the fall discounts, and we can maybe even get the prices down a smidge. But it's already 25% off at AKL and 30% off at GF. (I think I've seen them do 35% at Deluxe AP sales.)
