Okay, here me out... what about a Great Gatsby themed hotel?

We could capture the glitz and glamor of 1920s New York while also reaching a deeper message. Guests could explore a faux mansion filled with live entertainment and nightly parties. Original characters set in the style of the book but still original to have their own stories be told. Bonus points if the Harbortown Lighthouse is green.

I thought it was crazy at first but the more I read I to it, the more I love it and think it really works!

Not gonna lie, this is a really good idea.

This would be the PERFECT idea to have an insane, Victoria and Albert's style restauraunt in, plus the ideas for the pools!

I will have to say though, having a london themed hotel would be really cool, especially victorian london, because we could have "steamers" crossing the "Atlantic" to get to the park.

Yes
Location idea! South of Harbortown is a big lagoon, and from a certain location you can look directly into our park and see Snow White Castle.

Let’s place our hotel there!

Let the location suggest a theme too. This could be someplace which trades with Harbortown...possibly the London to Harbortown’s Boston. And give our hotel a backstory on par with Wilderness Lodge (I don’t know that story, I just know of it) to go with all this. Just some thoughts.
London could be cool. Maybe have Goofy dressed as Sherlock for kids events. Tea patry with Alice. Character dining with Poppins or pooh characters alongside Sherlock Pooh.

Note: All my knowledge of London comes from movies I saw as a kid and that one episode of Phineas and Ferb

I love that idea old Sport.

If we don't want an exact adaptation, I've had thoughts of Oswald with the Gatsby kind of role for a while (rich and famous in the 20s before losing it all). If I was gonna reboot Oswald, a Gatsby type characterization is exactly how I'd go. Could be a good enough tie for the hotel to be Gatsby, but not directly tied to the book.

Note: All of my knowledge of Gatsby comes from the DiCaprio movie which I freaking love a lot.

I think we're really sleeping on the Grand Detroit-ian Hotel

I'd be all for a Gatsby-inspired hotel. Just imagine the lavish parties we could have in the hotel for seasonal events!

So, sort of like the street performers on Sunset Boulevard? I like that.

Overall, it’d be cool to have a hotel with the vibe of Sunset boulevard!

Yeah, that would be a cool idea. Almost like guests have stepped into a story, with them occasionally crossing paths with the characters tied into it.

Perhaps the hotel's founder might be a Gatsby-esque figure, building this hotel as a luxurious hot spot in the hopes of attracting a lost love. Maybe there's an air of mystery about how he made his fortunes, so there could be a character of a private eye or some gangster toughs trying to find the enigmatic hotel founder.

Maybe there’s two sides to the resort:

Gangster and Actor?

1920’s glitz and glamor hmm? I actually really like this. We could definitely take aspects from Gatsby, but I don’t like the idea of making it a gatsby-themed hotel, it just feels a bit off. Maybe it could be because I’m not a Great Gatsby fan (book or movie), but I do think the setting from the book would do it pretty well.

I also like the idea of tossing some gangster influence in there. What if we did a Roaring 20’s Chicago themed resort, it could have all the fun of flappers and lavish parties, with a deep underground of speakeasies and bootlegging. Plus, we could invent an Al Capone-esque character.

To tie into it for a bit of a darker take, what if we did this theme but with elements taken from The Shining. Not like the blood elevator or the dog man, but we could have hints that it’s trapped in time and everything that’s going on is tied to the ghosts of the Cat’s Eye Lighthouse across the way

It sounds like nearly all of us are onboard with the Gatsby-inspired hotel concept. For a possible name, how about Disney's Grand New Englander? We don't need to decide yet, so let's spend today brainstorming more concepts, like the London hotel, and continuing to flesh out the Gatsby idea!

No matter what idea we go with, there will be certain common needs for a Disney hotel.

We can probably eventually divide the team up into people who are more interested in the hotel's theming & characters & backstory, and people who are more interested in its nuts & bolts like infrastructure & architecture. (I am in that latter camp.) That gives players who are less passionate about a hotel prompt something creative to focus on!

Now, architecture. With the 1920s East Coast mansion idea, I would enjoy partnering with @Mickeynerd17 like we did for Snow White Castle and looking at some real mansions for design ideas. Like mansions on Long Island or Newport, Rhode Island.

Lastly, here's a list of hotel spaces we'll need (based on what I've seen staying at Disney's Asian hotels):
  • Exterior grounds
  • Vehicle drop off
  • Entry
  • Check-in
  • Concierge desk & luggage storage
  • Computer room
  • Lobby (& other common areas)
  • 1 - 2 gift shops
  • Conference center
  • Pool area
  • Gym + spa
  • Signature table service restaurant (akin to Victoria & Albert's)
  • Family-friendly restaurant (includes a breakfast buffet + character dining)
  • Bar & lounge (perhaps akin to Trader Sam's)
  • Hotel rooms (standard & deluxe)
  • Hotel penthouse suite(s)
  • Wedding chapel (optional)

For the architecture, I suggest the entire hotel is one building, but with many “wings” for different styles of interior architecture. The first floor would be entirely public and filled with entertainment and services. Then the floors above would be guests, progressively getting fancier the higher up you go.

Disney's Grand New Englander is a good hotel name. Also, I'd love to help out with characters and backstory.

As for the hotel, I like that 1920s gangster idea. Perhaps the hotel's founder could be our Capone-esque character, using the hotel as a front for his criminal empire.

I think having one entire structure might not be the best idea for a large-scale hotel.

We could make a lower-value structure that could be modeled off of the groundskeeper's cottage.
