12 Year Old Girl Sued for Mp3s

DMC-12

It's HarmonioUS, NOT HarmoniYOU.
"The mother said she signed up for KaZaA, paying a $29.95 fee. "

Uhhhh... when has KaZaA ever charged a fee? Isnt this a free program? KaZaA Lite is even free... (as far as I know).

If You're Happy and You Know It.... download over a 1,000 songs and wave a HUGE RED FLAG begging the RIAA to sue you  :p ;)

No wonder the world is so screwed up.

Right, there are soldiers still away from their families, people can no longer stop on the US on their way to anywhere because they need VISAS, but hey, a 12 year old is giving away free music! STOP HER!!!! :hurl:

If you asked me, the mother shouldn't have put up hte money for the girl. The RIAA should've taken the KID for all she was worth.

*giggles thinking about the RIAA being in possession of a diary, some clothes from Limited Too, and bedroom accessories from Dry Ice* :lookaroun

I've been wasting an insane number of hours the last two nights reading about this and all the other lawsuits. Despite all the previous news, I didn't really believe that the RIAA would attack individuals like this until I read Monday's articles. It's a sad day.

And the "amnesty" program....did you all read about that? If you did, you might find this link amusing. :D

yeah, I thought it was funny she paid also. When I looked into it, kazaa has a plus version of the software (I would never pay for that) it costs 30$

Personally, i think the girl and mother got what they deserve. Stealing is stealing. The fact it's a song has no bearing on it. How big does the item stolen have to be before it becomes unethical, immoral and illegal?

There was a libarary comparision earlier. The library comparison is invalid, because you must return the book.

I'm glad the mother got dragged into this. Now maybe parents will take more of an interest in what their kids do online. Maybe this will force parents to stand up and take a more responsible role in the children's lives.

IMHO - The record companies are getting exactly what they deserve. There's no excuse for CD's to be MORE expensive now than in the past. How can full length DVD's be cheaper than 40 minute CD's? Who want to pay $15-$20 for a CD with two good songs?

Apple's music site and artists like Seal, Aimee Mann, and Simply Red, which are selling their own works on-line, are the wave of the future. These lawsuits are the last, desperate act of a dying industry.

Well, (and don't take this post the wrong way, for I am not trying to be sarcastic or mean spirited here, just wondering) if there were a way to "borrow" only music you wanted for a said amount of time and return it, would that be okay? I for one get sick of a song after about a month anyway, lol.

Hmmm, ok, I have a question. What about music you cannot purchase anywhere? (such as Disney theme park music) :p

You can buy a song you like for a buck at Apple's music site. As they say in Robocop: "I'll by THAT for a dollar!"

I've actually hit upon the perfect solution (at least for me). I have the XM Satellite Radio in my car and on my desk at work. It lists the name/artist of the songs that are playing. If I hear one I like, I write it down and then go to Apple's site and buy it. Neat, huh?

That would be perfect, and there are some avenues for that now. An expiration occurs on an account and you can no longer hear the streamed music.

I'm with Steve (celticdog) on this one. Nobody can convince me that they didn't know it was illegal to download songs for free and burn them on a CD or keep them on their computers to listen to - I don't care what the music companies are charging, it doesn't excuse theft.

But - that may just be my opinion <grin>

Well, book me up, I currently have all DuckTales episodes stored in my computer. If no channel is showing it and no DVD comes out, why should I not have a way to watch them? Of course, if they ever release a DVD, I'll definately get it, and then erase everything I have here. Like Gargoyles, I had all of them. When I heard the seasons were coming out, I erased it all and now I'm eagerly waiting for it.

Yes, I do have Kazaa... and yes, I do download songs. I download songs not to make CD's but to find out if a specific CD is worth buying. As someone already mentioned, who wants to go out and buy a CD for $20.00, or anywhere from $4.00 - $8.00 for a single only to pop it into a CD player andfind out that its... terrible! Whenever I download songs, I check them out.. buy the artists CD, and then delete them. Right now I only have 1 song in my sharing folder and that would be the Monorail to Epcot.

I think this is such a pathetic attempt... maybe if they actually do lower CD prices (as some companys have already said they will) people may start buying CD's. At the moment, Im kinda taking a stand and I am neither downloading music or buying it.

MKcustodial - My brother has all the Duck Tales series on tape.. the were running at 6AM up here on a Fox channel until about a year ago... the show is def. one of my favorite cartoons.:D

I still say that downloading a song is NOT stealing! Specially since I don`t download a whole album. I see no differance of what I used to do and that is tape songs off of the radio. and I would give them to friends and family. When I download something if I like it, I go out and BUY the cd if I dislike it I delete it it`s as simple as that. Infact the first songs of deadstar assembly I got from kazaa and then I went and bought their dvd,now if I could only get the company that I bought it from to send me the darn thing that would be great! I bought it from their site 10 weeks ago and still no dvd!

For those of you who are old enough, you may remember back in the late 70's and early 80's, the recording industry tried to stop the sale of blank cassette tapes, because they feared that consumers would tape albums for their friends. They were right, but the big diffrence was, it was a more covert operation. It was much more difficult to just obtain one song, it was more difficult to identify abusers. With the internet, you have your information out there and are easily tracked down. You are therefore making it easier for them to catch you, so don't whine and cry because you caught. Check any broadcast, tv, radio or recorded media, there is some of disclaimer or copywrite statement. What is occuring with downloaded media is UNETHICAL. Just because you don't want to buy an entire album, doesn't give the right to steal someones hard work. There are new site poping up on the web where you can purchase individual songs.

Oh, i am just as guilty. I taped albums back in the 70's and 80's. I just haven't gotten into digital media. There just aren't any good bands anymore.
