Ya know...I'm not really sure how I feel about this. I think moving the 5K to Thursday is going to make it a lot less doable for most people with work schedules and whatnot. Mostly I think I'm annoyed because I did the 5K/Half/Full this year and didn't get a special medal for it. :D I wonder how many people will do all 4 races...

Great that they are adding the 10K distance though - that will appeal to a lot of people. I wonder what the course will be like? I hope that this will allow then to reduce the cap for the half. And lastly...$160 to run a 10K is INSANE.

I guess the "unofficial" Dopey was just getting so popular Disney figured they should make some money out of it! It is great they added a 10k event for people that can't do the distance of a half. I doubt they will lower the cap for the half though. It will be interesting to see if the races take longer to fill with a wider variety of distances. As for me, I would love a Dopey medal, but I wouldn't be able to justify the price especially when both Dan and I would be running. I really do have to draw the line somewhere and Goofy is it! No...really, I am not lying to myself this time! :D

It's interesting. I'd never run it, but it's interesting. That's 45 miles over 3 days...and that's a beating on the legs. They should have just made the old dopey official, and not added another race, IMO.

I am surprised to see all three races are the same price - that is very interesting. And yes that is INSANE. I guess they just want to make races for everyone so they can get an entry fee out of every single person who is there for the weekend instead of the "runners", so mom, dad, kids, grandma, grandpa....

I believe you.... for now. ;)

I think the popularity of the Dumbo Double Dare sealed the deal for them with adding a 10k race to the weekend.

The distance isn't the thing that is scaring me away from it - the price tag is. $500 for three races, can not wrap my head around that.

The price is what kills me too. I think I would rather have a Dumbo medal than a Dopey one so if they continue to have the Dumbo Double Dare, I will save my money for that.

We all know that there is a group that wants whatever the "Best" medal is....which means this will sell out quickly. The price is astronomical, but they'll get it. I was going to run the Everest challenge, until I Saw what they are charging for a 5k.

Yeah...right now I think that registration fee is the biggest "rip-off" that runDisney has going, except for the EE Challenge.

I totally think you're right about this. That's probably what made them want to charge so much for the marathon weekend 10K too...the Disneyland 10K sold out in like 5 seconds at $95 per person, so why not up the price. The Disneyland 10K will probably be $175+ next year.

The Dopey Challenge is actually a "better deal" compared to everything except for the marathon and Goofy (I hope I did this right):
Dopey: $495/45.5 miles = $10.87/mile (if you want to think of it that way) (5 shirts and 5 medals, I'm assuming)
Goofy: $340/39.3 miles = $8ish/mile (3 shirts, 3 medals)
Marathon: $160/26.2 miles = $6.10/mile (1 shirt, 1 medal)
Half: $160/13.1 = $12.20/mile (1 shirt, 1 medal)
10k: $160/6.2 = $25.80/mile (1 shirt, 1 medal) !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
5k: $60/3.1 = $19.35/mile (1 shirt, 1 medallion)

3 early wake-ups was the worst for me this year...and I am sure some people will do Dopey + 5K and wake-up insanely early 4 times in a row.
The price is what kills me too. I think I would rather have a Dumbo medal than a Dopey one so if they continue to have the Dumbo Double Dare, I will save my money for that.
I agree...the Dumbo medal is more appealing to me too.

So with you on the EE Challenge. I really want to do a race at Disney with my husband though, and that's the one that appeals to him the most. So that's the one we'll do...for the low-low price of $220 for the two of us. Actually wait...the earliest we'll do it is 2014, so we'll see if they raise the prices next year!

I know we have discussed runDisney pricing on other threads in this section, but with the rumoured addition of this "Dopey" challenge, pricing for runDisney has gotten a little too out of hand (and foot). I was shocked to see the 2013 Disneyland Half priced at $175 as well as the 2013 Wine and Dine Half. I also purchased a pin for each race and with the taxes I forked over $402 and some change. This is the challenge I am accepting this year, but after I achieve my first coast to coast medal, no more runDisney for me for a while.

There are other races out there that emulate runDisney but don't have the inflated prices. I thought the Tower 10 miler last year was pretty hefty at $90 before the price increase. Heck, I thought the Louisiana Half Marathon was pricey when I entered at the last minute ($100), but that was expected since it was last minute. The Tower 10 miler in 2012 was enjoyable and I thought pretty awesome for the price, and I am sure these next two coast to coast half marathons will be just as spot on for the money. But, it's Disney and regardless if it is a character meal, park entry, runDisney, an after-hours special holiday party, or some other Disney-related extra fee event, those that like or love Disney will pay the price and be treated to the Disney magic and experience.

As for the rumoured "Dopey" challenge, all the more power to the ultra marathoner or avid runner who loves these challenges. I will never enter this because I am only "half crazy." I'm just getting into running and training for half marathons. I still cover about 5K in 30 minutes and that is fine with me.

I just wonder when runDisney will cap the value of a runDisney event. I thought $90 or so was enough for a 10 miler, or $125 for a half - but $60 for a 5k, or $160 / $175 for a half or full marathon? Or $350 or $500 for the Goofy and Dopey events? How can put a price on running 39.3 or 45.6 miles in a 3 or 4 day span?

I have already entered myself in the 2014 Louisiana Half and it was priced at $50. A half priced at $50 compared to $60 for a runDisney 5K. I wonder if Disney donates some of the proceeds to charitable organizations like the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis. Looking forward to running the St. Jude half in December, and I know the money will go to a great cause.

Very interesting. Not that I'm Dopey, but I'll bet we'll have at least one person on our sub-forum who is next year! LOL

I agree, but for Disney this translates into an extra night at the resort if someone in your party is participating in the 5K.

I figured Dopey would become official someday, but I wasn’t expecting it would be with a 10K. Too expensive for me; and the 10K is the same price as the full, wow! It will be interesting to see how this pans out. So do we need to come up with a name for doing all 4 races since they stole Dopey from us?

You're absolutely right, and that's a problem I'm starting to have with runDisney right now. They are really all about the cash (super high registration prices, crowded races, buying corral placement through the Runner's World Challenge, etc.), and I'm afraid that the experience for the runners is going to start to suffer.

10K price from the above link is now $95...still pricey but much better than $160.
Must still be working out the info. I know if you go on active and search for the marathon it just brings up the 2013 races. Not sure who found the 2014 link. Maybe they will tinker with the Dopey pricing some more but I am still drawing the line at Goofy lol. I told my husband about it yesterday and he said maybe we could save up and do it which totally surprised me. I am usually the one who talks him into stuff. I still would rather save to do a nice CA trip for Dumbo Double Dare.

So that means the 5K and 10K can't be on the same day, right? Unless the 5K start time is moved up and the 10K starts late-ish...so the expo will open Wednesday and they'll need to set up all the race stuff for 4 days. I wonder how much extra that costs them...obviously it will be justified with the extra registration fees and people staying on property longer.

Will they chip the 5K now for Dopey runners for verification? Will they care more about that now? Hmmm
