10day Magical Trip at Port Orleans Riverside Royal Room & Discovery Cove (3/28-4/6)

I've been a long time reader of the forums and I don't post much but considering how much enjoyment I get out of reading everybody's amazing TRs (seriously, some of you are master story tellers :) ), I figured I should pay it forward and share our recent WDW vacation this past Spring Break. So, this is my very first TR so please bear with me if my report seems a bit hard to follow and lacks cohesion.

This was our 3rd trip to WDW and 1st trip for our DD6. Living in Seattle, which is about as far as you can be from WDW, we don’t get the opportunity to get to WDW as often as we’d like considering that Disneyland is only 2 ½ hours away by flight. Our last trip to WDW was back in 2004 before our DD was born when hurricane Charley, a category 4 hurricane went through Orlando at the end of our trip. We were one of the very few lucky people where we were able to rebook our flight out of West Palm Beach (as Orlando Airport was shut down) and secure transportation down to West Palm Beach.

Our WDW trip was a surprise trip for our DD which included a 10day stay at Port Orleans Riverside in the new Royal rooms with a day at Discovery Cove to swim with the dolphins.
Our planning for this trip started back in July of 2011 and we had a few close calls and slip ups but fortunately we were able to keep it a secret until the day we were leaving for the airport for a red-eye flight out of Seattle to Orlando, arriving at POR at 9:30am.

Before we begin our Trip Report, I wanted to share some general comments regarding our trip.

The “Left Rule”:
I remember reading somewhere that when you enter Magic Kingdom at rope drop and look down Mainstreet toward Cinderella’s castle, you’ll notice that more people are walking on the right side of the street than the left side of the street and they called that the “Left Rule”. Meaning that for whatever reason, people at WDW tend to favor right side over the left side. This was absolutely true during our trip where lines on the left side were usually less busy than lines on the right side whether it’s the ride lines, FP ticket lines, or food queue lines.

Speaking of FP ticket lines, here was an interesting observation. I’ve never noticed this before but it was a very common sight during this trip especially on the popular & busy rides where there would be a group of people that would have 1 person wait in each of the FP ticket lines and whoever got to the FP dispenser the quickest, all the others would join that person (I think they were part of a tourist group) with each having a stack of tickets in hand for the FP tickets. This really didn’t bother me at all but it noticeably bothered a few others in the FP distribution lines. I had more fun trying to pick them out in the FP lines and watching for other people’s reactions.

Weather:
The weather was simply AMAZING the entire duration of our trip. Average temperature was in the upper 70s when we arrived, gradually increasing to 90 degrees by the end of our trip with no noticeable humidity that we’re used to during the summer months. We did have 1 thunder & lightning storm on the day of our Discovery Cove excursion. They actually had to close Discovery Cove until the lightning storm passed. It was the typical torrential downpour that you experience during the summer months and then clearing out after a few hours.

Free WiFi:
There was free WiFi at the POR property (with pretty good signal at our room) and for those that care, this was what I logged on the average internet speed:
1Mbit download | 0.20 Mbit upload

Dining Plan:
This was the first time we used a Dining Plan through the free-dining-promo and I would have to say that this is a great plan for people that want a low stress dining experience without having to worry about the individual cost of the food items. It was very nice having your meals pre-paid and being able to enjoy any entrée/ dessert/ drink that you wanted rather than deciding what you’re going to eat based on the cost of the food items. While the Dining Plan is not for everybody, we will definitely add the Dining Plan to our future WDW vacations. Based on our eating habits when we’re on vacation, we most likely would have spent about the same amount on meals & snacks. Just the convenience of not having to worry about the cost of the food while on vacation and being able to order just about anything on the menu is a good trade off and worth it for us.

Most Expensive Counter Service Meal: $45 (lunch) – Sunshine Seasons @ EPCOT
Least Expensive Counter Service Meal: $22 (breakfast) – Riverside Mill Food Court @ POR

Most Expensive Table Service Meal: $130 (dinner) – Princess Storybook Dining at Akurshus @ EPCOT
Least Expensive Table Service Meal: $87 (breakfast) – The Crystal Palace @ Magic Kingdom

Total cost of Snacks, Counter & Table Service Meals (including gratuity): $1360
Breakfast meals by far were the cheapest so if you’re looking for the best bang for the buck on your meal credits, I would recommend using your Meal credits on Lunch or Dinners and using your Snack credits on breakfast.

Now onto the TRIP REPORT !!!

It was about 2pm, 81 degrees (which was almost 40 degrees warmer than back home) and our plan was to do rope drop, power through MK through lunch, head back to POR to rest then back at MK for our 5pm ADR and nighttime parade & fireworks as today was to be a very full day.
And this is where we had planned incorrectly. At Disneyland, you can be out of the parks and back in your hotel in about 15-20min whereas it was taking approximately an hour each way and the fact that the busses seemed to be running slower than usual.

Is it scary that I get a bit misty eyed when someone says they are having their first Dole Whip? It's almost like welcoming someone new into our family. :)

Thoroughly enjoying your TR! And what a great surprise for your little girl!

I'm sad to hear that you didn't have a good experience with Quick Silver Tours. I have a 10 passenger van reserved with them for my upcoming trip in Oct./Nov. 2012 (I'm assuming that's what picked you up). But, I also read someone had a bad experience with Happy Limo...maybe, I should just reserve a van with Mears.

Thanks again for your TR!!

Enjoying the report. We stayed at PORS in 2007 and your pictures and commentary are reminding me of how much we enjoyed it!

Looking forward to more!
Welcome! We’re more than halfway through our vacation.. makes me sad :(

Great report. Really makes me want to make a stay at port orleans. Havent been there since it was Dixie Landings
So many different places to stay at WDW but I could be completely happy with making PORS our “home” given the perfect balance of property decor, price, location, and surprisingly good food court.

Haha.. I wanted to tell everybody in line (on our second time through) how good the Dole Whips are and that they should get it too but I didn't because I didn't want the lines to get longer. Is that bad?

Enjoying your trip report :) Can't wait to read more!
Thanks for following along!

I’ve had two great experiences with QuickSilver but I’m ready to try a different company. I think it’s really a toss up on how your experience is depending on who you end up reserving. You may have stellar service with QuickSilver in Oct/ Nov.

PORS and The Dole Whip both met and exceeded my expectations.
Dole Whip is now a required stop every time we’re in MK.

Day 6 (Monday): A scorcher of a day at Animal Kingdom
Logged 8.00 miles on the Pedometer (18,789 steps) for the day.

Today started with the following special letter:
9.png

Today’s temperature was expected to break 90degrees, essentially summer temperature but with no humidity. Regardless of humidity or not, 90 degrees is still pretty hot especially when you have the sun beaming on you but thankfully, AK has a lot of shaded areas to help with the heat.
The agenda for today is to start with the Kilimanjaro Safari in Africa then do a clockwise loop hitting Asia, DinoLand USA, Camp Minnie-Mickey, then Discovery Island.

As we got off the bus, temperature was warming up nicely at 70 degrees.
The first AK sign you see when you get off the bus.

And the obligatory picture in front of the Animal Kingdom entrance.

Our first agenda was to head to the Kilimanjaro Safari, taking pictures along the way, as the animals are always active in the mornings for feeding.

And soon we could see The Tree of Life…

Our plan for lunch was to eat at Yak and Yeti as I’ve heard pretty good things about the food there. I ordered the Lo Mein Noodles with Chicken, DW had the Sweet and Sour Chicken, and Madelyn had Uncrustables. For dessert, we had chocolate mousse (pictured behind the water bottle) and frozen lemonade.

IMG_5487.jpg

IMG_5488.jpg

Lunch came out to $41 and I really liked how your meals were served in these Asian themed To-Go boxes.

Based on all the different Counter Service meals we’ve had, I will have to go out on a limb and say that this was probably one of the best, if not THE best, Counter Service meal that I’ve had the entire trip. And this is coming from the Asian guy who has had his fill of amazing Asian meals to pretty bad & miserable Mall-Quality Asian fast foods. My Chicken Lo Mein had great flavors. The noodles were not overcooked & mushy (as is VERY typical in Asian fast foods), the veggies were actually crunchy (a big surprise!), portions were big, and it was not salty and “over soy-sauced”. (Soy sauce is not a flavor, it’s an enhancer!)

You could easily order one entrée like the Lo Mein noodles and order a side dish (fried rice for $5 extra) and not pay an extra $18 for another entrée as it would be good enough to feed two people.

Even after finishing our large bottle of water and large cup of soda, I started to get a dull, nagging headache at the back of my head shortly after lunch which was probably early signs of dehydration. I don’t know what it is about the Animal Kingdom but it always seem to feel a lot hotter than what the temperature suggests, even with all the shaded areas within AK.

Slowing our pace down a little bit and grabbing some Mickey Bars and drinks along the way, we ended up at Finding Nemo – The Musical in DinoLand USA. I didn’t take any pictures of the musical as I was recording the musical on our video recorder but you’ll have to take my word that this is probably one of the best musical productions in the Disney property. Ranks right up there with the Aladdin The Musical at the Hyperion Theatre in Disneyland.

Unfortunately, Madelyn was literally ½ inch too short to ride the Primeval Whirl. We didn’t actually check to see if there was a height restriction but after we got in the FP line, we saw that there was a height limit, so we promptly went back out to the beginning of the lines and sure enough, Madelyn wasn’t tall enough. She was definitely bummed & disappointed but a cold ice cream bar on a 90 degree day easily rectified that situation.
I love buying kid’s happiness with junk food!

After getting the bajeebus scared out of me at Dinosaur…
img022.jpg

…we finished up DinoLand USA and headed to Camp Minnie-Mickey for the Festival of the Lion King.
Last time we saw this show was when it was an open-aired, non-airconditioned show.

What is Rafiki’s Planet Watch without Rafiki?
IMG_5583.jpg

IMG_5588.jpg

Rafiki’s Planet Watch was a pleasantly nice surprise. This is the very first time we explored this attraction and even though Rafiki’s Planet Watch felt a bit “detached” from the Animal Kingdom park, it was a nice change of pace as it was not crowded at all and the Observation Station was indoors and air conditioned.
However, with the wait for the train to take you there and back and the amount of time it takes to go through Rafiki’s Planet Watch, ideally you’re looking at a 1 ½ to 2 hour round trip journey. So, if you have limited time at AK, you're going to have to budget your time wisely if you're planning on doing this attraction.

Afterwards, we headed to Discovery Island for It’s Tough to be a Bug! but unfortunately that attraction had closed down for repairs. However, right next to the entrance was the Character Photo opportunity for Dug and Russell!! Dug & Russell were amazing characters. They were totally in character and were VERY interactive with each other and with each of the people they were getting pictures taken with.

While we were waiting in line for Dug & Russell, here was this little boy in a wheelchair with braces on both of his legs wearing a Perry shirt, he had the biggest smile on his face and you could totally tell he absolutely adored Dug & Russell. His family just kind of stepped back and let Dug and Russell interact with him and it was just so heartwarming to see how much attention Dug & Russell were both giving him. They were running around giving hugs, high fives, signing his autograph book, trying to wheel the boy away and posing for pictures with him AND doing all this in 90 degree weather. Just the look of sheer & utter joy on his face was priceless.

I’d be lying if I didn’t say I got a little choked up here as the boy was having the time of his life just being near Dug & Russell and without a care in the world, enjoying his dream vacation at WDW. This Disney moment reminded me why we vacation to WDW and gave me a new perspective of our vacation for the remainder of our trip on how silly it was to be worrying about the heat, crowds, & waiting in line.

After we got back to PORS, we headed into Riverside Mill Food Court for dinner before settling down for another long day tomorrow.

I had the Fresh Sliced Beef at the Carving Station with mashed potatoes, cornbread and steamed veggies. I can’t remember what DW had but Madelyn had her usual Uncrustables. For dessert, I had the cheesecakes (of course) with generous helping of the strawberry sauce.

IMG_5622.jpg

Dinner came out to $40 and the beef was well done and dried to death under the heating lamp but was easy to put down with extra gravy. Steamed veggies consisting of carrots & squash were surprisingly fresh and crunchy although it looked like they were boiled and soggy. There was nothing too special about the Mashed potatoes with gravy and the cheesecake was well… delicious as usual.

Considering today was quite draining with all the walking and the heat and that my headache never really went away, we decided to forego the rope drop at EPCOT tomorrow but the goal was to get there shortly after opening. Tomorrow promises a great day for photo opportunities as EPCOT’s International Flower & Garden Festival was currently underway.

Next up: Day 7: It’s ALL About The Duffy and The Unintentional Rope Drop

I'm following along, though slacking on commenting! :)
Beautiful family, and fantastic pictures.
You really "did" Animal Kingdom justice on your day there!
We stayed at POR in December '11, though not in the fantastic new rooms. Now we have to go back!
