10 years without Toad

I remember as a kid being terrified of the train light and of the devils poking at you!

I was working at the Fantasyland Character Festival on Mr. Toad's last day. I watched people pass out "save the toad" flyers while a plane flew overhead displaying a banner in support of our soon-to-be-doomed froggy friend.

my friends and I out front of the attraction.

We'll miss ya, J. Thaddeus Toad!

I liked Toad, and it used to be my favorite Fantasyland attraction. But, I'm not torn up about it's removal, and Pooh is pretty solid. Nowadays though, Philarmagic is the keystone attraction in that corner of MK for me.

I was SO scared of that, too. Luckily, that's what made it unforgettable. When I was really young, my parents would let me 'drive' the car. We've got so many home movies now with my dad yelling at me on Mr. Toad, "Jennifer, where are you taking us? You're a terrible driver! Great, now you've taken us straight to hell!"

Apparently, the ride stunk since so few people rode it.

Really? I was there during some of the last few summers of it's operation and I remember it being just as popular, if not more so, as Snow White's Adventures. We usually had to wait at least 20 minutes and listen to that loading spiel over and over again. I can still hear it now: "When the car stops, please step out to your right. Step out to your right please."

I think that Mr. Toad's Wild Ride is more meaningful if people know the story behind it. That's true of several of the attractions at WDW.

Mr. Toad's story hasn't been on TV or in the theaters in a long time but the DVD is available on amazon.

http://www.amazon.com/Adventures-Ic...ef=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1220892444&sr=1-1

The ride is based on what Mr. Toad did.
At first he was riding around the country in a cart pulled by his horse and both of them were having a great time.
One day, however, Mr. Toad encountered a 'motor car'. This was at the time when cars (automobiles) were new. He became obsessed with getting one for himself and even sold Toad Hall to a bunch of weasels in order to obtain one.

Then he went on a wild ride in his new motor car.

Nah, it didn't stink and it wasn't a carnival ride. At least, none of the carnivals that come around here. But neither was it Winnie the Pooh.

It didn't close because it wasn't any good - rather, it closed so they could put something better built, more popular and with a merchandise tie in.

Pooh is a better ride, but Walt Disney World's Mr. Toad - I'm just thankful that I experienced it as a kid and my kids later had the opportunity also.

Mr. Toad's Wild Ride was a 1970s experience that would NEVER get green lit for WDW in today's world!

"You see, the guest boards the ride vehicle which is an old style motor car and assumes the identity of Mr. Toad, who is on the run from the law. . . ."

"for the grand finale, the motor car ends up slamming headfirst into an oncoming train and after a series of bangs and crashes, the riders end up in hell, with a big scary devil jumping up at them with his pitchfork just before the ride ends and everybody unloads!":ROFLOL::lol:

okay, maybe THAT's the reason it closed!

Can anyone confirm this?:
(from one of the sites in the first post)

Take a close look at Walt Disney World’s pet cemetery. There’s Mr. Toad! What does the gravestone say? Here’s God’s Honest Truth, people.

Here Lies Toad

Sad But True

Much Less Profitable

Than Pooh

As far as I know, the gravestone doesn't have anything written on it, but this phrase is widely associated with it (possibly an in-joke amongst cast members).

I loved Toad! It made me smile, it made me happy: :ROFLOL:

For all it's cheap effects, it's tackiness, I do think it was a labour of love. Very colourful, great fun.
