Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance

I rode twice when I was in town for the Gartner conference. I don't remember any cannons on either ride, so I assume that is a feature that was missing. BB8, the Rey projection, and the Kylo AAs were all active. I had ZERO spoilers going in, as I avoided any thread/article/discussion about...

    What did you do?

Ran 3 miles over lunch hour today. I had a running buddy for about 1/3 of it, as a neighbor's dog saw me go past and decided to join me for the loop in my route. He stayed ahead of me darting back and forth across the yards as though he was running reconnaissance (making sure no squirrels...

    What did you do?

The two hardest parts I found with training for the half-marathon were: 1. My knees (Between decades of sports and cartilage removal surgery, they're pretty beat up) 2. Time (It's hard to find blocks of time to run for 2-3 hours). On the plus side, the endurance part was not a problem, and I...

    What did you do?

That's my theory, too. I trained for and ran a half-marathon back in April. My Garmin watch tells me at all times what heart rate zone I'm in, and for those longer runs, I cruised in the low-aerobic zones for most of them. Didn't sweat that much. I sweat like crazy on my regular 3-5 mile...

Give me the Novavax vaccine, and the conversation is over.

Coronavirus and Walt Disney World general discussion

In what way does an attenuated, inactivated, or subunit vaccine instruct your body to make something it fights? The intruder is in the vaccine, and the body fights it. In mRNA technology, the body is instructed to make the proteins that it then fights.

Instructing the body to make cells it is then going to fight is a radical new concept.

Yes, something could happen. It could be the body gets good at making the spike proteins and just keeps doing it, even after the instructions have dissolved. Or, it makes so many it overwhelms the immune system. I don't know all of the combinations and permutations of what could happen when...

V1.0. Studies are much smaller numbers of participants than real world applications.

Studies are wonderful, but I want to see years of real world results when you are introducing something of this magnitude. Make no mistake, this could end up being a truly great technology. Time will tell.

You are correct. The mRNA and J&J vaccines are (briefly) teaching your body to make (harmless) spike proteins that your body is then going to fight. This concept in and of itself gives me pause. I don't believe the six-week standard for vaccine adverse reactions is enough to build trust in...

There's a world of difference between study and real world application. V1.0 of anything should be viewed skeptically until trust can be proven. That trust may take weeks, months, or years of analyzing results.

This is the first use of mRNA technology for anything other than study. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/different-vaccines/mRNA.html?s_cid=11344:what%20is%20mrna%20vaccine:sem.ga:p:RG:GM:gen:PTN:FY21 https://www.nature.com/articles/nrd.2017.243

If you look at the CDC data for Florida, deaths are already on their downward trend while cases are still going up.

The only thing that I think will move the needle (heh) on vaccinations is availability of the Novavax vaccine. It's built on "classic" vaccine technology, so there are fewer arguments against it. It's not briefly teaching your body to make (harmless) spike proteins, and it's not known for...

Sure, I should not have said always. But, normally, viruses attenuate over time. If you have underlying conditions, COVID is a bigger deal. If you don't have underlying conditions and get COVID, you are likely one of the 99.6% that survive it. Natural immunity through having had it, as...

According to the CDC, 94.9% of COVID hospitalizations had at least 1 underlying condition. Also, according to the CDC, 99.998% of 0-17 year olds survive it. Virus variants are always more contagious but present fewer complications than the original strain. The media ignores this fact, just as...

    Disney Parks to Ban Straws

True, though there's no way Disney is surrendering the generous profit margin on water bottles. Charging for a water refill, while bold, wouldn't net them the sales they get from bottles. Removing straws didn't cost them any sales and, as a bonus, slightly reduced per drink costs.
