News Bob Iger is back! Chapek is out!!

The war for Disney - who will win? The timing of this, on the heals of the tragedy in Colorado Springs, could not be worse. Even if it had no impact on the decision, there is no way it is ever going to be untied from that now. Disney may have made a huge mistake in announcing this now.

Rumor Higher Speed Rail from MCO to Disney World

Don't forget that the expansion to Disney Spring is part of the much larger phase 2 - which also includes expansion to Tampa. So you would be drawing in riders not only from the east but also from the west.

"It's fantasy (or a movie), we don't have to explain it"

A great example of theme shift. Fantasyland isn't, or at least wasn't, Europe. That is just where it has now ended up because of our shifting notions of fantasy. Europe certinaly didn't fit the old Submarine Voyage theme, and before Pooh Mr Toad's Wild Adventure was not European, either. Nor...

"It's fantasy (or a movie), we don't have to explain it"

Here's a different way to think about it. Besides It's a Small World, which really isn't a story, and Winnie the Pooh (a recent add), everything in It's a Small World is based on a classic fairy tale. To that effect, yes Princess and the Frog belongs in FantasyLand as well.

"It's fantasy (or a movie), we don't have to explain it"

Old Disney vs New Disney. Pre 2003/2004, there was a clear distinction in the parks. By now many people never experienced it, so it makes not sense any more. But before then, the only place Disney animation had a real presence was in FantasyLand. This was because the old rides were seen as...

News Reedy Creek Improvement District and the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District

Who owns all the roadways and other infrastructure that the Reedy Creek supports? Is that under the ownership of Reedy Creek, or Disney? If it is Disney, would the counties have to do a land taking for that?

News Reedy Creek Improvement District and the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District

Just because it seems to have been lost in the shuffle- Remember that Disney is moving nearly all of their Imagineering to Florida. That already did not sit well with them. This is a group of creatives who thrive on a creative and diverse environment. Moving them to a suburb in a...

    News Disney Exec Resignation

Right now, Disney offers an experience no one else does. That has been what has allowed them to pretty much do whatever they want and still draw in the crowds. But... That doesn't mean that won't change. Already we have seen that other parks can now create as immersive environments. And the...

    News Disney Exec Resignation

Chapek is a product guy. Really you can't pin the Riviera resort completely on him, but there is some strong influence there. The difference is that in the past, Disney (I think this permeates the whole company now) was about the experience. The resorts were an experience, and they marketed...

    Epcot wasted space?

If you look at the way they, along with Spaceship Earth and the post show building, all fit together you realize they are there to squeeze even more money out of the guests.

Was Magic Kingdom’s parking and transportation system a mistake?

Just one year. They started work on the 2 diesel ferrys in '72.

Was Magic Kingdom’s parking and transportation system a mistake?

Actually, no. The three current ferries were built 2 in '72, and the third in '76. Well before even Epcot. As for the monorail trains, they started with 10. The original Mark IVs were extended by one car in the early 80's, and 2 more trains were brought in '84. The Mark VI's remained at 6...

Was Magic Kingdom’s parking and transportation system a mistake?

Are you asking is it a mistake, or are you asking is it something that needs to be fixed? It wasn't a mistake. For the time that the park opened, for what they envisioned the park to be, it was the right thing. Today, however, they never imagined there would 3 other parks, that there would be...

The women in the computer room scene on Spaceship Earth

Disney will never place an animatronic of a living person (outside of the Presidents) due to licensing issues. It will always be "a representation" of that type of person. That being said, there is more to it than just a women working in a computer lab.

Big and Tall friend to Walt Disney World

As somone who fits the lesser of those two dimensions, yes it is quite doable. What they will enjoy will depend a great deal on themselves. I for instance don't do a lot of the roller-coaster type rides because I hate those types of rides. But I have friends larger than me who do them quite...

The women in the computer room scene on Spaceship Earth

I just learned this today. Dr. Valerie Thomas was a scientist with NASA. She oversaw the Landsat program, and then later was the computer facility manager. From there, she expanded the SPAN network, which went on to become a vital part of today's Internet. So, that scene in the computer center...

Is it the rides, the environment, the characters, or the themed merchandise?

It has been a while since I have been on these boards. I used to be a big WDW fanatic, but I lost the spirit several years ago. AS such, I haven't even been inside the parks in over 3 years, and haven't kept up with any of the changes, nor experienced many of the new lands and attractions. But...

General thoughts on "Futuristic Architecture/Theming" in Disney and in general

Disney has no qualms about changing anything. If it will sell more merchandise, then they will do it. That being said, I think it has a place. They do need to get rid of the current overlay, which really works for no one. Go back to the clean look. Tey need a hoe for more modern story character...

General thoughts on "Futuristic Architecture/Theming" in Disney and in general

This could get deep, but... Design is inextricable from trends. And complicating matters, different people and different social groups react differently to trends. One of the challenges Disney has had is that because, ultimately, they are designing buildings (well, facades anyways) for...

GM and the World of Motion vs Horizons

Disney used a lot of content - both directly as well as inspirationally - from the 64-65 World's Fair. Spaceship Earth is inspired by the Bell Systems ride, Universe of Energy closely resembled Ford's Magic Skyway. One that has me puzzled, though, is GM. Horizons is very similar (though not a...
