I did think that was interesting, although I think Vegas likely has more competition from online gambling, which wouldn’t apply so much to Disney. The rise of cruises may have impacted Vegas as well, as people who want to party hard on vacation now have more options there.

That said, the inflation of the past five years or so is no joke. It seems semi inevitable that consumer spending will have to cool at some point.
It’s definitely nowhere close to a 1:1…but Vegas has become almost the definition of needless waste at high prices…as have “destination” theme parks

Excellent post 👍🏻

Thanks! And I’ll be curious to see what happens with purely discretionary spending this year. It’s been surprisingly resilient thus far but the increased cost of everything just keeps accruing over time. It’s almost a cliche to say that “the $5 Starbucks coffee” is the first thing budget advisors will tell you to cut, can only imagine what they’d say to a $30 popcorn bucket, lol.

Walt Disney World is a far better value proposition than Vegas. The same steak in Vegas costs double what it does at WDW. Ditto for everything else. They truly nickel and dime you there. And for what? To gamble? Seriously? I’ve been for conventions. They’ve even had IAAPA there in the past. LDI is a good show. But tbh the value for visiting Vegas isn’t there for me. WDW, as pricey as it is, is still a good value compared to other entertainment options (which have also raised their prices).

That’s sad to hear, I have so many fond memories of going there with my husband in the late 2000s, right after the 2008 fiasco. If you were willing to go off season then the deals were insane!

Interesting that the topic of “overtourism” has also been big this summer. Anecdotally, when I was growing up, going to Europe on vacation was something you did if you were 1. Very young or 2. Very rich. (And going to someplace like Japan was unheard of unless you were military.) Now it’s not uncommon at all among people I know.

So far as I know Disney has managed to remain an attractive travel destination even among these tourism shifts, but hopefully this keeps them on their toes and they realize people have more options now.

Europe is a great alternative to WDW. My wife and I stayed in Rome this January (off-season) and it was incredible. We even met Pope Francis! Our hotel overlooked the Pantheon, meals were inexpensive (at the moment and pops, tourist traps abound) and delicious, and everything was in close walking distance besides a few large churches like St Paul’s Outside the Walls.

We also did Japan and HKDL this year (@marni1971 is right, HKDL is incredible!). Very affordable compared to WDW on the food and tickets but not the hotels.

Oh, HKDL certainly is. We got an equivalent Grand Floridian balcony room (with sea view) for less than half the Orlando cost.

This year we have Explorers Lodge for $200 US a night.
We paid a pretty penny for the HKDL hotel but it was totally worth it. I was blown away by them still having the orchestra in the lobby. At TDR we did a vacation package at FS which was pricey but worth it and did the remainder at the TDL hotel, very nice as well.

Disney doesn’t build hotels like these anymore stateside.

Nobody is making that comparison

The comparison is high priced tourism that is hot at all a necessity. Which is hard to dispute at either location

Sounds amazing!! I’ve been too nervous for international travel with my son but I’m hoping to do a train tour of Japan sometime during his elementary years. Between that and the technology I think he’d love it!

Japan is great. Very safe to travel. I have military friends who were stationed in Japan and would send their kids on the public trains to TDL and they were perfectly safe and had a great time. The hardest part is actually the flight. We broke it up by staying in Hawaii both ways.

My worry is mostly about him melting down with too many new things or not eating anything if familiar foods tastes even a little different there… he’s a high strung kid and I didn’t even attempt overnight trips outside of grandparents houses until he was three. So far he’s chilled out a bit more with each passing year though so I’m hopeful he could be ready in a couple more years!

Yeah that’s a big challenge with Japan, not so much HKDL. My wife didn’t like the food very much. We stuck mostly to what was familiar, which is limited. Fortunately they can make cheese pizza if you ask them to!
