Elio (Pixar - June 2025)

Just saw the new trailer for the first time tonight in front of SW and it does look good, but boy, they really changed this a lot, didn't they? It seems like being mistaken as the leader of Earth and all that is completely gone now? I'm trying to think if Disney/Pixar have ever gotten to the point of putting out a trailer that was so dramatically different from what actually ended up being produced before.

One of my faves was Frozen, though that’s slightly different.

I honestly think marketing didn’t know the storyline. So many Hans Prince toys and the trailer was a short about Sven and Olaf battling over his nose; that very much buried the lead out of shame they were making a princess musical. All the posters implied Kristoff was Elsa’s love interest.

Good dinosaur is another that really strayed from the original, though still never worked out.

I apparently didn't pay attention to Frozen before it came out. I remember that there was a lot of redevelopment, but not the early promotion.

I thought about this one, but didn't go look to see what the early teasers might've been.

The teaser trailer did nothing to say what the movie was actually about, feature any of the music, or the main characters.

It was essentially it's own stand alone cartoon.
My memory of that period is that they were still convinced they had to hide or at least "obscure" that a film had women as lead characters for fear that boys wouldn't go. The conventional wisdom within Disney seemed to be that an important factor in the low box office for Princess and the Frog was the use of the word "Princess" in the title, leading to Rapunzel being re-named Tangled and that film's success seemed to vindicate the idea that you could have a female-centred film just so long as you didn't promote it that way. That is at least my reading of why Frozen's early marketing was so divorced from the film itself and focused so much on Olaf.

Thankfully, we are far more enlightened now and no-one gets triggered when a film has a woman lead or, for example, when a portrait of a female pirate shows up in the background of concept art for a bar at a theme park.

Yeah, given how badly The Marvels, Wish and the Snow White remake did - and they did next to nothing to directly appeal to boys in the advertising (aside from the general assumption that boys liked MCU movies and...I dunno, the butt joke involving Valentino?) - I wouldn't be surprised if future Disney-backed films with female leads return to the Tangled / Frozen approach if they aren't part of established franchises like Moana. Come to think of it, Freakier Friday, Zootopia 2, and the Moana remake are the only absolutely-happening Disney films with female leads I can think of going forward...and the Lilo & Stitch remake's been doing way more to feature the latter than the former in the advertising.

Finally saw the final trailer for Elio and it came off as cutesier and sappier than I expected it to be, and I have to wonder about releasing it just a month after the Lilo & Stitch remake with that and the general "wacky kids and aliens" hijinks going on in both. I don't doubt L&S will be huge, but whether that will help or hurt Elio remains to be seen.

I think it’ll help Elio.

Everyone, including marketing and merchandisers, really only care about Stitch anyway... Especially internationally.

I think Stitch and Elio are two separate things and have no barring on each other. I'm seeing more marketing on Stitch. HTTYD has a huge marketing push. The Pixar crowd will still show up for Elio. Personally it looks a little immature for most adults to enjoy. They should have used a different character design to make it stand out.

Even if you think it looks immature, I’m sure the movie will prove itself otherwise, starting with the opening scenes of the movie.

So what I got from this is Elio is grieving from the deaths of his parents. He thinks he doesn't belong here. He doesn't fit in and is lonely. He wants to go someplace else. Depression? Suicide?

He is beamed to a colorful magical place (heaven) with lots of aliens. He makes friends with a warlord alien's son. Goes on an adventure and changes the warlord Father's heart.

I can see Pixar trying to tackle this subjects in a kid friendly way. The recent animated movie (Spellbound) voiced by Rachel Zegler delt with devorse.
