Unfortunately, I've read they could miss their flight as well:

Travelers using IDs such as a passport should make sure they put it with their travel stuff.

Travelers might want to add their passport or DL to an available digital wallet.

Large airports may have dedicated lines for travelers without Real ID, or equivalent. Pssengers in other airports could get stuck in a slow line

ABC News tonight with David Muir advised that if passenger does not have their Real ID , will go to a different line to get more scrutiny but passenger will be allowed to fly.

Will the plane wait for these passengers running late??

If the vast majority of pax have the right ID the high security line could be faster.

Planes cannot wait. They have time slots that they need to adhere to.

This is really nothing new. There have always been provisions for flying without proper ID, well before Real ID hit the scene. If for some reason you had to fly, and did not have ID (such as maybe you lost your wallet while on vacation) there was a process where TSA would pull you aside and interview you to ascertain if you were who you said you were. The more corroborating information you could provide, the better. If you were traveling with a family member on the same itinerary, maybe had pictures with each other on your phones and social media. A hotel folio showing your name and that you checked out that morning. Your boarding pass from your original flight. Anything like that would help.

When you were in a situation like that TSA advised getting to the airport as early as possible, WELL before you had to board. Not having a Real ID is the same thing, just get there really really early, since there are now a LOT more people trying to fly without proper ID.

Here in NJ it is a royal mess trying to get a Real ID. Appointments are extremely hard to get. The process at Motor Vehicle is also a mess (Wait in line to be told to fill out a form and then get back in the same line, when I could have filled out the form while in line). It took me about 2 hours to get my Real ID with an appointment. I really have no idea why I did so. I have a Passport and Global Entry. I guess I figured I would do it, just to get it done.

All that high property taxes NJ residents pay surely isn’t invested in efficient DMV operations.

FYI

2. Besides getting on a plane, where else will I need a REAL ID?

While many know they’ll need REAL ID for air travel within the United States 🇺🇸, there are other situations where it matters. Mainly, REAL ID is required for:

  • Entering federal buildings that have extra security and ask to see identification (such as military bases or some federal courthouses)
  • Accessing nuclear power plants

Note: Not every federal building checks for REAL ID. Only places with extra security rules do this. For example, some may let anyone in without checking for special ID, while others might always check for it

Thank you so much for posting this. I did not know that it was necessary for showing your Real ID to enter these other facilities. How informative!

That wouldn’t make the judge and hawkers happy if law enforcement at the entrance of the courthouse deny you entrance on assigned jury duty !
Missed the point. Without the exception prospective jurors wouldn't be able to enter the courthouse. They wouldn't be part of the pool. A free pass to getting out of service

Not a single dollar is. Property taxes are for municipal services (police, fire, local roads, sewers, parks, rec programs, etc).

NJ MVC is a state agency. State income tax, state sales tax, and other fees pay for that mess.

Gotta love states with no state income tax ( doesn’t include NJ ) but at least someone pumps your gas 😉
