Our DMV is appointment only for Real ID and supposedly they are completely “booked” for spaces…and yeah, 30 regular cash is the way to go…but you still have to get out to clean your windshield…
I was gassing up on the NJ Turnpike and after the attendant filled my tank up saw my very dirty windshield , he washed up my windshield. I said thanks !

Just goes to show you we’re not ALL rude and inconsiderate…in all actuality, since the GS Parkway & NJ Turnpike charge 10-20 cents per gallon more, they SHOULD go above & beyond…

I have friends and family in the Northeast. Great bunch of folks but some can be very impatient at times. We’re not all perfect by any means.

It was made a law in 2005. The first compliant deadline for states was 15 years later in 2020. If people still aren’t compliant 20 years later in 2025 ….they’ll never be. 😆
I didn't get a Real ID until a few weeks ago because of how my DL renewals fell. My last license renewal was 8 years ago. Real ID wasn't even on my radar, then. My license was up for renewal this year, so I finally got the real ID a few weeks ago for an upcoming flight. Didn't need it, really, because I've had a passport for decades.

States aren’t compliant, individual drivers are…every state has a percentage of Real ID compliant drivers. Every state has to certify their drivers have met the requirements to have that symbol added to their license. Someone can correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe the requirements to earn a Real ID certification are uniform throughout the US…
Yes, the requirements to obtain a Real ID are a federal issue. The state compliance bit is because several states procrastinated for many years in implementing the federal requirements therefore, obtaining a Real ID was not possible for many. Feds had to mandate deadlines for processes to be put in place because states were not compliant with the new options. It’s almost like some states thought it would just go away. 🤣

Some states thought the Federal Government should reimburse them for the additional costs

Your State doesn't just automatically do Real ID? In NE, every Driver's license is Real ID compliant. They don't offer any other choice, you either provide the information needed, or you don't get a DL. As far as I am aware, it has been like this for many years.

NY let's you get a regular DL, Real ID Dl or an enhanced DL.

Complying with Real ID requirements can be an issue for woman.

I got married almost 30 years ago and went through the whole changing everything over. With this Real ID, I did not have to show them again my marriage certificate/divorce papers/first marriage certificate. I did show my BC again, my SS card in my married name, and 2 proof of address like a utility bill.
Them making it unnecessarily hard for woman that have been married for decades is insane. Common sense dictates that if you have the same first/middle name and the same date of birth as your birth certificate and show your existing ID with your married name, that should be sufficient.
If someone is going to lie and cheat, they will have fake paperwork anyway. SMH

Common sense, NOT. Burucrats.

My wife had middle name on DL middle initial on her passport. Passport wasn't usable.

She needed original BC. We had it. She needed an original marriage certificate from her 1st marriage 40+ years ago. Didn't know what local municipality issues. Had to check multiple municipalities. Wasted hours. Also needed divorce decree and a copy of our marriage certificate.

Insane, especially since we already showed all of those things the FIRST time that we changed all of our documents. So basically the government is saying that they don't trust themselves. SMH

If one has an active passport, RealID really isn’t an issue.

RealID is the exact same as a regular ID, just with a fancy star on it, which reminds me of a certain Dr. Seuss story.

Real ID is to correct issues that might not be Real issues.

Some states did not have the same documentation rules required by Real ID.

Some states didn't require SS #s

Some clerks may have used the honor system with respect to some documentation.

Real ID requires going back to original documents. This can be burdensome to a woman who needs to document multiple name changes.

Overkill when middle name vs middle initial invalidates use of a passport.

Passenger are subject to screening. I assume terrorists have access to FAKE Ids.

Real Id should have been dropped instead of extending the deadline.

A few weeks from long lines at airports

Fake IDs for sale were a thing back in my college days and I’m sure it is now. Used to drink at the bars. Fake IDs can be made for a number of reasons for the buyer.

I'm just going to continue using my passport and/or Global Entry card. I already had to interview for Global Entry. I feel like this information shouldn't be in silos, particularly if it's required to fly domestically.

I guess some States are extremely lax and just take your word for it. But even 30 years ago, when I got married, I had to show my marriage certificate to change my name. The first thing you change is your SS card then your DL. Everything else after that.

Some clerks might have accepted a regular photocopy. NY Real ID required very old divorce degrees to document name changes back to the birth certificate. It's logical to assume a marriage license requires documenting prior divorce.

People move. How many licenses were issued based an out of state license.

I THINK THIS IS OVERKILL, particularly for women.
