That may be your opinion, but it is not Fauci's. In that interview he says the CDC guidance will stand "for now", meaning it could change.

In another recent interview he said:

"The CDC continually monitors the situation and I'm sure would remain flexible, that if any changes are warranted based on the evolving situation, they would then make a change in their recommendation. But right now, it doesn't look that way," Fauci said in an interview Wednesday on CBSN. "It looks like they're going to continue to stay by their original recommendation."

I’ll add to this because I know it’s sounds mean but honestly we don’t have data on how effective masks are with delta.

Maybe even if everyone is masked it still spreads like crazy because it’s that contagious.

If my kid wasn’t vaccinated they would not be leaving the house, mask mandate or not, until we have actual data.

As we are discussing the sky rocketing cases in the UK, it warrants once again a comparison of cases and severity of illness by juxtaposing case counts with hospitalizations.

Case rate is going up like today's Falcon 9 launch (WDW guests may have heard the sonic boom around 3:30 PM)

However hospitalization rates, though certainly increasing do not resemble the daily case count trend at all.

Perhaps it's simply a case of the UK population is generally more healthy than the US (I can believe that) and they are able to handle this variant at home vs in hospital, but as each day of massive cases goes by and the hospital cases bump up just a little, I'm less and less worried that Delta will overwhelm the system.

Thanks for the perspective! Cases (even among the vaccinated) aren't really important. What is important is people getting severe, life threatening illness.

Off topic, can you really hear a sonic boom at WDW from a rocket launch? I saw a Space Shuttle launch as I was walking out of Universal Studios a while ago and there was no sound. I did hear a sonic boom that rattled the windows at my house in South Florida when a Space Shuttle passed overhead on the way to land at KSC.

I need to go back and look but it was based on real time numbers with efficacy. The math was showing it needed more.

Got married in October. things seemed to have moved. I thought my swab was in my upper dresser drawer. But when I came down with covid it was not there. I briefly checked my office, but I barely could move or look. So I let the research site know (Voicemail/email , had a hard time ever getting a live person). At this point I did not yet have my initial covid test results. I did get the positive results, told the research site and then they contacted me after talking amongst themselves. I suggested since I lost my swab from Pfizer that they overnight a new one to me since time is critical if I end up getting better before swab is done. They finally did send it (About 2-3 day transpired in this process) but it came to me on the weekend and they had the courier pick it up first thing Monday.

Hard to know if it would be worse if I was not vaccinated. It all depends on how good of a match the antibodies from the vaccine were to the actual virus I got. I am still glad I was vaccinated, it may have helped. But still surprised I got at least moderate covid so many months post vaccination. For now the virus being a variant seems to be (for me) the likely cause of me getting moderate or worse covid-19. I would love to know if it was a variant.

Thanks and was just curious since i had received notification the 2nd week of June about expiration dates (was on vacation when contacted) and wondered if yours had too. They are mailing out for those who have expired.

Personally with the data given I would say you did get it much more mild than would have otherwise. Not surprised Pfizer won't let you know what you had. Though really Delta variant seems to not be understood well enough as some say it only seems more transmissible, not producing worse outcomes. I'm sure time will tell.

But really glad you are okay and it wasn't any worse than it was. I've watched friends go through without vaccines and they had some truly very scary outcomes. A few moderate labeled by doctors even admitted for a week at a time. Severe being needing more than a little extra help (like vents). One friend even had one dose but, fell ill 1 day later. At least most lived... though some did not.

Some official or official adjacent reference would be super helpful. I’m not even sure how someone would schedule a single mRNA shot after the J&J without lying along the way somewhere. At minimum about having the first or skipping the second. Some real plan would be helpful.

It was clearly legit against the variant it was tested against. I don’t regret getting it.

The question is, how does it hold up against the current variant? We need that answer, not just a guess.
The few stories or tweets suggesting getting 1 mRNA to go with it are just guesses. Even if they’re not going to do a full study on it, some limited testing and results would be nice. Is even 1 needed? If yes, is 1 enough or should it be 2? Did the variant actually escape it or is it just less effective a lot? Or it’s none of those and just the perception because it was 1 shot.

I get that they are rushing everything and things change but it bugs me when they originally said “don’t choose your vaccine take the first one that is offered to you” and now that might not have been the best advice.

It’s a legit vaccine. The one and done nature made it attractive to some people. There are also some people who didn’t want the Pfizer/Moderna shots due to the mRNA technology being unproven and in rarer cases due to potential for allergic reactions to them. Whether people think that’s a valid opinion or not is irrelevant, the point is someone getting the JnJ vaccine is better than them getting nothing for sure. The efficacy of the JnJ vaccine is still much higher than most people dreamed was possible before the trials were complete. Remember the government threshold was originally set at 50% efficacy to gain EUA.

I'm viewing it differently than you. It's a single dose vaccine for starters that does well against Alpha. I view it as a booster for other variants.

Agreed! Best i find now is that the articles I read were not really studied well enough. I apologize for misunderstanding what I read. Have family in town and well... yeah hadn't seen them in 1.5 years...

Getting a second shot of mRNA after J&J, if that becomes the guidance, does not mean the vaccine is bad. Just as there are studies underway suggesting that mixing AstraZeneca with mRNA as the second does offers improved protection.

There has also been new information about potential benefits of extending the period between doses for different vaccines. All of these vaccines are very new and we're still learning how to best utilize them.

J&J is also great for hard to reach people. Someone who is transient for example and might not come in for a second dose and can't be easily tracked down, J&J gets them fully vaccinated.

A launch? No you don’t hear sonic booms from a launch, even viewing from KSC. Generally speaking rockets are at too high an altitude when crossing over to supersonic for the wave to reach the ground. Today’s launch was a SpaceX Falcon 9, and there was a possibly of sonic booms being heard in the area from the first stage landing back at the Cape.

Back when the shuttle was still flying, large swaths of Central Florida were treated to sonic booms as it would fly over the state on landing approach.

Typically SpaceX lands well down-range on a barge in the ocean, but today was a rare landing back on land. I’ve heard F9 landing booms in downtown Orlando before, so depending on weather and atmospheric conditions it wouldn’t be impossible to hear one at Disney or universal, … although conditions would have to be right.

… and to stay on topic, as someone who got J&J, I’ve been closely following the discussion regarding a possible mRNA booster for it. Holding out for some official guidance on that, hopefully sooner rather than later, but when it comes I’ll jump right on it.
