My understanding was that they were already cancelling room reservations through the end of the year, so no surprise here.

>>Disney CEO Bob Chapek says he is “extremely disappointed” that Disneyland remains closed after nearly eight months by an “arbitrary standard” in COVID-19 state guidelines established by California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s administration.

“Unfortunately, we’re extremely disappointed that the state of California continues to keep Disneyland closed,” Chapek said on the call. “Frankly, as we and other civic leaders have stated before, we believe state leadership should look objectively at what we’ve achieved successfully at our parks around the world, all based on science as opposed to setting an arbitrary standard.”

Chapek commented on California theme park guidelines in Newsom’s Blueprint for a Safer Economy during a conference call with analysts on Thursday, Nov. 12.

Large California theme parks such as Disneyland and Disney California Adventure remain closed and are unlikely to return to full operation until early 2021 or next summer under COVID-19 health and safety reopening guidelines issued by the state.

Disney theme parks have reopened in Florida, China and Japan. Disney theme parks in France have reclosed amid COVID-19 outbreaks in Europe.

“People have shown a willingness to visit our parks, which I believe is a testament to the fact that they feel confident in the measures we’ve taken,” Chapek said on the call. “We’re very encouraged by the positive news earlier this week on the progress of a potential vaccine.”

Disneyland’s health and safety protocols have the support of labor unions representing 99% of the resort’s hourly employees, Chapek said. The Newsom administration’s “arbitrary standard” is keeping Disneyland employees from returning to work and “decimating” local businesses around the Anaheim parks, Chapek said.<<

Did he just accuse California of not following the science?

>>Disneyland and Disney California Adventure are expected to stay closed for the rest of 2020 and not reopen until 2021 while large California theme parks remain shuttered under state guidelines, according to Disney officials.

“We currently anticipate Disneyland resort will remain closed at least through the end of the fiscal first quarter,” Disney Chief Financial Officer Christine McCarthy said.

McCarthy commented on the continued closure of Disney’s Anaheim theme parks during a conference call with analysts on Thursday, Nov. 12.

Large California theme parks such as Disneyland and Disney California Adventure remain closed and are unlikely to return to full operation until early 2021 or next summer under COVID-19 health and safety reopening guidelines issued by the state.

Disney’s first quarter for 2021 is expected to end in late December just before New Year’s Day with results reported in early February.

“Our parks and experiences business continues to be impacted by COVID-19,” McCarthy said on the call. “We do not have visibility into how long it will last.”

The Disney Parks, Experiences and Products division saw a $9.7 billion decline in revenue in fiscal year 2020, according to the quarterly report.

California officials issued separate reopening guidelines for small and large theme parks in the state. Small theme parks with a capacity of less than 15,000 visitors can reopen in the orange/moderate tier 3 while large theme parks can return in the yellow/minimal tier 4.

Orange County — home to Disneyland and Disney California Adventure — is currently in the red/substantial tier 2.

Under a best-case scenario, Orange County could move from the red/substantial tier 2, through the orange/moderate tier 3 and into the yellow/minimal tier 4 by mid-December. But O.C. Health Care Agency officials have said that the best-case scenario is unlikely.

Once the parks were cleared to reopen, it would likely take Disneyland and DCA another two to five weeks to prepare the parks for visitors — which would push the first potential reopening date into early to mid-January.

Disney CEO Bob Chapek said on the call that he was “extremely disappointed” that Disneyland and DCA remain closed after nearly eight months by an “arbitrary standard” in COVID-19 state guidelines established by California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s administration.

“Unfortunately, we’re extremely disappointed that the state of California continues to keep Disneyland closed,” Chapek said on the call. “Frankly, as we and other civic leaders have stated before, we believe state leadership should look objectively at what we’ve achieved successfully at our parks around the world, all based on science as opposed to setting an arbitrary standard.”<<

Well Mr. Chapek, I think its less about what you all are doing and more about individuals saying "screw this crap, we're going"

I find it unfathomable that in the midst of a worldwide pandemic, DW is still open given the COVID numbers today. What are they thinking as the cases, usually followed by deaths skyrocket? So just who is pressuring them to expose them to COVID, severe liability and image damage? I find it amazing that with all the red hot spots around Disney like Orange, Osceola and Orlando, Disney's area is white or known as almost "no cases"?
Florida today:
Total Cases; 889, 664
Cases on 11/14/20: 10,200
Cases yesterday: 4,663
Total Pediatric Cases (5-18 yrs): 78,424
(yes, kids get it) or see for yourself: https://covidaction.maps.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboard/index.html#/4915657158ed4991817d3703107563ba

2 trains of thought here.

1) Disney is staying open because the state allows it and is doing what they feel is appropriate to keep guests safe while in the parks.
2) Disney could lead and close their parks due to the increases in cases not only in the state but country wide.

People will likely have issues with them no matter what approach they take

Disney is a business.

They will stay open just like every other business until they are told they need to close or it’s no longer advantageous for them to stay open.

And you are right; either way they likely lose with a big chunk of the population.
