Project Seven: A Splash of Placemaking

You asked for it, you got it! For this project, we'll be taking a look at the surrounding areas around Disneyland and Walt Disney World's Splash Mountain attraction. As we all know, Princess and the Frog will soon be moving into the Brers home, changing the landscape of both the lands the Splash Mountains reside in forever. Both parks have challenges. While Disneyland has the advantage of the New Orleans Square setting, it also now is in a Critter Country land that barely has anything to do with Critters. Most of Critter Country is Winnie the Pooh right now, and that's clearly not thematically going to flow with Princess Tiana and company. Meanwhile in Florida while Splash has the benefit of being in more of its own sub-area, it also has the problem of having the equally iconic Big Thunder Mountain Railroad directly across from it...an attraction that has a definitive LACK of a New Orleans bayou flair.

The goal of the project is simple. Create some placemaking and transitions in the areas surrounding either park's Splash Mountain in order to make the switch-over to Princess and the Frog more natural. You are allowed to make changes to attractions in the surrounding area, but be careful with the realism points there and focus more on scenic transitions and the actual land itself. You are NOT allowed to do a full write up of the actual Princess and the Frog attraction but are allowed to elaborate on how the facade, queue, and attraction entrance would function within your new area.

NuCitra, since you won last round you get to pick rather you want to work on Frontierland in Walt Disney World, or Critter Country in Disneyland. Please have your choice made by tonight at the latest. The sooner the better. If not decided on by tomorrow morning, we'll have no choice but to flip a coin for it. So don't loose this advantage and be decisive about this as soon as possible. Good luck teams. This project is due Friday, July 10th at 11:59PM Eastern.

Feeling more passionate for this project than the last (where I voted for Minecraft to mainly get rid of the Pooh Mountain idea). I'm up for working with either park.

Also I'd recommend for this round we communicate a bit more, I think splitting off what's really been killing us in the last two rounds.

I don't want to play my hand too much for the other team in case they are reading this thread but I like the aspects of both parks. I am definitely more familiar with Critter Country having gone to Disneyland almost every year for the last 15 years but there is also a lot more land to work with in WDW!

Mmmm. Not sure how I feel about this project considering the fact that I am not at all happy with the announcement to make it Princess and the Frog. But as to not rock any boats I will keep that opinion quiet. I used to work at the gift shop for Splash at WDW but I also am a SoCal native who grew up with Disneyland so I am cool for either park.

While I couldn't see Disney doing it, but if we do WDW's Frontierland we could have Tiana go out West to expand her restaurant business as the explanation for why this ride is in the old west.

Either way with both WDW and DL, we have at least one ride with the potential to retheme. With Big Thunder it'd be fun to have a twist on the classic to make it work more into a late 1920's/ early 1930's setting, while with Pooh we can do pretty much anything we want with it, even start anew.

No matter what either will be a lot of fun to work with.

I would be pretty careful with that as it does say while you can retheme you should focus on realistic point and the scenery.

Ok but in all seriousness, I think if we strike a careful balance with a realistic retheme (ie: don't transform Big Thunder Mountain into something entirely different, but do alter the landscape to better fit with new Splash) we should opt for a Texas-inspired Big Thunder Mountain.

Red Dead Redemption does a great job with a transition to swamp to desert. There's this grassy Texas Fields area with large oak trees, pictured below. If we could make Frontierland look less like Utah and more like Texas, adding grass and trees, but still far out enough in the mountains to be "frontier".

Or in the case of the other team opting for WDW, we could try applying this onto Critter Country.

I think it's safe to start brainstorming about what to do at DL since it seems like Team Citra is all in for WDW. Personally I'd go for extending New Orleans theming to Critter Country, as I feel like it'd be missed opportunity if we don't have Tiana's Palace in one form or another.

Also does anyone want to step up to be team leader? @AceAstro, @montydysquith-navarro, @gam3rprincess you are all eligible.

One thing to keep in mind while we're creating this is that there needs to be some sort of Meet and greet spot for Santa during Christmas (and PaTF characters for the rest of the year).

My main idea is to have there be a toy store owned by Eli La Bouff (Charlotte's Father in PaTF) replace half of Pooh Corner with a second floor that has the meet and greet (so it doesn't disrupt any store space like what happened with Elias and Company at DCA)

The biggest concern I have is that Splash Mountain is in the bayou, but New Orleans Square is in the city. That means if we wanted to add PATF themed city locations, we’d have to do it before the Haunted Mansion, and then still have all of Critter Country to turn into a bayou area.

I don't really see how Santa would fit here. I would say it would make more sense to move him somewhere else
