Urban explorers don't hit homes that people live in. Pretty much everyone in the community considers that to be beyond the pale.

Urban exploration is more about abandoned spaces, caves, rooftops, etc. Not about people's homes. So tired of hearing that downright dishonest comparison which is almost as bad as equating urban with rape.

But aren't Trespassing laws equally about liability and safety and not just about protecting the corporate landowners right to privacy (which is clearly the needle that you are trying to thread by defending Urbex). Disney doesn't want folks to Trespass in areas that are closed because they are liable for what happens to you in their space and they don't believe that you will be safe without supervision.

No one said Trespass is equal to Rape. How would you feel if you were held responsible/liable for someone else's stupid behavior that got them killed?

Actually, a very prominent poster here did equate urbex to rape - I posted the link to his cringe post earlier this morning, but it seems to have been taken down.

Not to defend the trespasser(s) in this case, but that's not really a fair comparison. I'm smart enough to keep my house locked and unavailable to urban explorers. Apparently, Disney isn't. Not even after numerous explorations to the same location.

Which brings me to something that I've been thinking about since this happened.

You guys know how I'm a part of the crowd that labels the entry point security as 'theater' and just for show? Yeah, so how is it that they said something about us having glass baby food jars this past October yet somebody was able to waltz backstage and at the very least take prop clothing, if not an entire animatronic. Whew, good thing they have that top notch security. I mean seriously, with all of the cameras and personnel, how does one gain entry to these places without being noticed in the first place? I get looked at sideways if they think my foot is beyond the parade rope boundary...

And on top of this case, we're about to see a video where someone is gaining unauthorized access not just to the Magic Kingdom but an attraction by foot. I personally think that these things are going to change the way that Disney handles their security procedures. They'd be daft not to.

I don’t think many people realize the sheer amount of workers who come out at night, including Disney CMs and non-disney contractors, etc. BDD, for one, had talked about having fake IDs, I’m sure he had a safety vest from his stint in Entertainment, and already knew backstage areas from when he worked there. I think a lot of it must be - if you are walking around and look like you know what you’re doing it doesn’t raise a concern. I don’t know about this BTM video to come, or how exactly he got up there, but rides themselves have off-limits areas requiring keys and special access. I’ve seen this myself, on certain rides you’ll see placards that (not sure of the wording) saying that access is restricted; and I’ve seen the same during Evacs, many locked areas that need keys to get into. Obviously, though, he found some loophole, literally, to get to where he was. I’m still curious if BDD was trying to get back at the company for something, or what his motives were; he talked an awful lot on Twitter and I always got some sense of arrogance, but maybe that was just me.

You're an absolute square if people walking around filming abandoned locations offends you. They know the risk. They like the reward. They don't steal anything. It harms no one. The vast majority do not break in to stuff the way Sonswa and BackdoorDisney did.

Sorry, but I have to disagree. You see you cannot guarantee the behavior of the people "exploring" these areas. If the individual
that stole Buzzy, had fallen and broken their neck, someone would try to make Disney responsible. I have over 25 years of experience
in Commercial Insurance. The claim would say the company did not do enough to keep them out of the area they were injured in.
As much as you may think so, do this is a crime and not a victimless crime at that.

Hate to break it to you, but how do you get into these places to film WITHOUT breaking in? Shouldn't that mean all explorers break in to stuff?

There are definite limits to UrbEx...I really enjoy doing it, but everybody knows the risks and the places that are just offlimits (Occupied areas, areas that are guarded, construction sites, clearly marked areas, etc...). A place like WDW would always be a nogo zone, because its occupied, owned, observed and clearly marked.

Areas that I have been include old factories that are in a state of abandonment, buildings with no owner (there are a lot of these...bankrupt businesses that even the banks have abandoned) or exploration with owner consent. If you get caught in any of these areas, its usually a police officer checking if there is anything illegal going on and the worst you can expect is an escort off property for safety reasons. More than once Ive had officers pull out their flashlights and join in, because "lets document this area in case I have to come here on a call"...this translates to, "This is really cool, mind if I come along?" There is a large abandoned mall caretaker/property manager right near me that knows me and will let me in to photograph or explore, just because he knows I respect the place and wont do anything stupid.

People like Sanswa, even if his videos are pretty cool to watch, wreck the activity for the rest of us that follow the unwritten rules and work within the bounds of the law. If you want a better UrbEx person, check out Dan Bell and the Dead Mall series on YouTube. They are really cool.

Yes, yes, and yes. As a fan of urbex videos, everyone should watch dan bell. Or retail archaeology. Or Ace's Adventures. Or doomie grunt.
As interesting as disney urbex is, these videos are vastly more entertaining. Plus if you stick to dead mall videos, they aren't urbexing since the place is still open!

How many people is a vast majority when it comes to breaking into off-limits Disney locations? I need a ratio here.

Dead Mall goes into a few closed ones. The Rolling Acres Mall one is classic...He gets busted and walked out.

(Long-time lurker here with a first post)

Just speaking from my experience working at Star Tours a few years back on my CP, we had several doors that remained intentionally unlocked which led backstage in case we needed to clear the building for an emergency. We also used all of those doors to rotate positions, etc. The important / actually dangerous machinery is locked, but getting backstage to film our dingy little hallways would be super easy. The cameras I had access to were used for crowd control and not backstage security.

Buzzy getting taken might be the pinnacle point of them not having proper security and change is needed, one would think at least.

But geezus that is kinda scary.

I don't think it would take long for us to break a disagree button.
