That didn't stop them from doing Happily Ever After. Less Lagoon centric would be odd but can't say I'd be surprised.

EPCOT Spaceship Earth Refurb - 2 Year Closure

If the plan is to begin a major refurb of SSE in the next two years though, I would think that wouldnt make it a centerpiece of a new nighttime show..

Not even slightly comparable. Wishes was already hub/castle centric and the new Epcot show will remain lagoon centric.
That would be as if Happily Ever After suddenly began projecting on the train station at a point in the show.

They just want a new way of displaying the new sponsor's logo while people are filing out of the park.

Wishes could be easily enjoyed from many places around Magic Kingdom without missing crucial parts of the show. Happily Ever After requires a front of castle view to see half the show. Requiring a Spaceship Earth view would be comparable to that very much. And that quote clearly stated that the LED panels would be part of the new Lagoon show, making Spaceship Earth viewing kind of important to see part of the show. The timeframe seems off, since the new show premiers well before the rumored refurbishment of Spaceship Earth. But requiring view of one portion of the park icon is very much comparable to requiring view of another park icon.

You can watch happily ever after from anywhere in the park that you could watch Wishes from and see the same amount of show you would have seen with Wishes. Actually more pyro. But yes you miss the projections which are an important part of happily ever after.
The difference here is that nearly half of the guests watching the lagoon show would have their backs to SSE and most of the rest have obscured views of SSE. Very few areas around World Showcase provide lagoon viewing and decent views of SSE.

I'm not advocating it, but I don't see why there couldn't be something done with the fountain and SSE along with a lagoon show. Kind of like the Tree of Life Awakenings and Rivers of Light. Just a thought.

Could not disagree more. Take away one element and see if other still works.
Wishes was a fireworks show that was accompanied by an audio track that matched certain fireworks sequences. Could Wishes work as either a fireworks show without audio and/or audio only without fireworks? We think yes either way.
HEA is a projection show that has fireworks further the projected narrative. Could HEA work as either a projection show without fireworks and/or as a fireworks show without projections? We think not.
Also, as you note, HEA projections are unviewable throughout much of the MK. So be in visual range of the front of the castle or HEA is"unwatchable.:

I respectfully disagree.
Projections are certainly an important part of HEA and viewing them is necessary to fully appreciate the show.
However, if Wishes could work as a fireworks show without audio then Happily Ever After could certainly do the same. HEA features more pyro and better product than Wishes. One does not need to see the projections to appreciate HEA as a fireworks show. Seeing the show without the projections though would definitely be doing a huge disservice to the show.

I could see this LED board thing go either way, to be honest. Could be a real thing and alienate, for lack of a better word, half the viewing audience, or it could just be heresay that has been reported as happening.

We watched HEA from Frontierland on the last trip and it was nice. Sure, we missed the projections but we still really enjoyed the show! So the hub may be preferred but to say it's unwatchable from elsewhere seems extreme.

I’d agree. My barometer on this is watching from our Bay Lake Tower balcony. As fireworks shows even at that distance, both were/are solid. We miss the projections because we’ve seen it up close and know how much they add. But that’s different than saying it isn’t a good show without seeing the castle.

It's not unwatchable, but it's kind of like listening to a concert from right outside the venue. Sure, you can hear the music, but you aren't really experiencing the concert.

...let's not if the best they can do is build a RnRc with can can dancers instead of Aerosmith.
(I preferred the lights and lasers space theme instead of the janky new cardboard cut outs, never been there though)
