Disney paying tuition for hourly workers

Regardless of whether the program ends up having typical corporate pains, that is an outstanding move forward! Not just for Dis, but all corporations.

Disney's Jayne Parker, Chief HRO, announced because of the tax breaks and the booming economy Disney is going to pay the the college tuition for hourly employees. Way to go Disney.

This was actually announced back when they announced the "bonuses" in January. Disney already had tuition reimbursement, this is a change of and expansion to the program. Now instead of being a reimbursement, they pay the money up front. Instead of being able to only receive tuition for courses that relate to your current role, you can now pursue a degree in anything you want.

Wonder what some of the details are. My employer pays for schooling, but it comes with strings. Sliding scale of payment by grade: A 100%, B 90%, C 75%, D or F 0% and you have to sign a contract to work for the company 3 years after completion or pay it back.
Mine as well and you need to be above average on your yearly reviews so you lose it. It is crazy to think they didn't do this all along.

It’s only for online classes which is sort of a huge downside. I’m currently in college in Orlando and it would be great for me to have Disney help pay my tuition but I’m not willing to go all online just for the savings.
"Disney is rolling out its program in phases, with the first limited to online classes. In-classroom courses could be added if there's demand for them, a spokeswoman said. "

I’d like to see all companies do this.

The $2 trillion education debt bubble is the looming crisis that nobody ever talks about. We are using 20th century thinking to apply to 21st century pricing.

I’ll applaud disney for this...whatever the reasons, it’s beneficial and they are in a position to do it.
It does strike me as odd that it's limited to hourly workers though. I can't figure out the logic behind that part. Isn't it feasible that salaried workers might like to participate in something like this as well?

That sounds like reimbursement. This is upfront tuition, which is a huge deal. There wouldn't be any way to have a sliding scale for grades that you haven't earned yet. Not to mention that they'll cover admin and book costs as well.

Bravo to Disney, this is a huge step in a very right direction.

Salaried workers may already have a tuition reimbursement benefit? I know I did at many employers.
